Star Wars - Home (Lightwave) vs. Studio (models)
I uploaded earlier a render of scenes I had tried to duplicate from Star Wars using Lightwave 2015.3. I had found this compilation scene here on RUclips and tried to duplicate it as best I could (just a guy playing with Lightwave at home) and I thought it would be a good idea to upload a comparison with them side-by-side. I thought it came out well, still lots of learning to do. Rendered in Lightwave 2015.3, Particle Illusion used for explosion, all composited in Hitfilm Pro.

A few more duplicated shots from the original show, plus a few previous ones I've posted before mixed in...and a couple of my own shots. Opening Galactica shot was a lighting test (mix HDRI & a spherical light). Models by Marcelo Arias Espinoza (Raider), Gordon Brinkmann (Viper), JujuVenile (Galactica) and Anson Call (Raider). Rendered in Lightwave 2015.3 and composited in Hitfilm Pro 16.

This is a re-render of a previous video I uploaded about a year ago. A few comments on other videos pointed out the starfield was a bit excessive on star coverage so I spent some time tweaking the starfield procedural textured environment I use. I think it looks much better. I also fractured the Klingon model and used the Morph Mixer to explode out the pieces. I also stuck a flat plane about mi...

This is my Earth model, I followed a number of tutorials and used bits and pieces of the different ways shown to create this model. Day/Night cycle, cloud and atmosphere layers, textures mostly from NASA. I think it came out well. I added the moon as well, building the object using the other tutorials minus the atmosphere, clouds and day/night nodes. Texture maps from NASA. Both are 1/100th sca...

The viper acceleration in the last clip was good. The earlier viper accelerations seemed too instant. The textures seemed unnaturally clean too. This is probably because the original series used physical models and those tend have less than perfect texturing. Good shot composition though. These are minor nitpicks.

Commander Adama would be proud. It just occurred to me. From Atari on, I don't think there has ever been a Battle star Galactica video game. This could be its promo. Like Battlefront 2. Or 32X Shadow Squadron style... Dreams😊⛅ A faithful retro resurection...

Now THAT is my girl! She is MY Galactica. Yeah the reimagined series was good, but it wasn't Galactica! It didn't have the elegance of the Battlestar. The nobility of the Colonies. The pageantry of the theme when it plays the hair on my arms stand up. Granted the 'space disco' was over the top, and crash landing every other episode and finding human colonies was a little much, would lead some 8-year-olds to ask "why didn't they just settle there?" Because the network executives wouldn't let them! But whatever new incarnation they come up with, I hope it goes back to what we grew up with and not the Ronald Moore wet dream of a half naked Trisha Hefner, Lucy Lawless, and Grace Park.

Looks great, the only nit pic I have is that the landing bay is sealed at the front. The door is supposed to be open for ships larger than vipers to launch out of it. The stuff that’s in the way doesn’t even look like a door it looks like a solid piece of machinery. I fully support the concept of a door closing off the forward launch bays, I just think it should really look like a door. Other than that it’s freaking awesome.😊

Such a lovely ship- though I always wanted to see where her turrets and main weapons were! It's frustrating that in the few space combat episodes, it just appears to fire energy bolts from somewhere at the front.

Even watching from almost 2024, this looks incredible. Like everyone else, I'd love a faithful reboot of the original - one where the main cast are better people and Cylons are robots- not regular actors used to save money.

It's really impressive that modern computers and software can create animations so similar to the original Battlestar Galactica in 1978. This kind of power also opens up new doors to those who want to go further: One key issue was never directly addressed in the '78 series. The Galactica escaped the massacre near Cimtar, recovering a limited number of fighters. Then when the Galactica and the Pegasus attacked the Cylon City at Gamoray, the complete fighter compliment of both ships were combined aboard the Galactica when the Colonial Fleet escaped Gamoray. At no time in the series was the Galactica ever said to be down on its fighter compliment, even though battles were depicted that showed Vipers having been destroyed. In short, despite obvious losses, the Galactica (and Pegasus) never seemed to run out of Vipers; they simply trained new pilots and put the pilots in brand-new Vipers. (And the Galactica even customized at least one Viper, disarming it and enhancing the engines for high-speed reconnaissance in "The Long Patrol"). This leads to what should be obvious but was never directly shown: Colonial battlestars must have the built-in ability for in-situ resource utilization (space jargon for "living off the land"). How could they do this? The underside of the battlestars' hulls have built-in nooks and caverns that would be an excellent place to capture asteroids, even while in flight. A ship like the Galactica (or Pegasus) could snag a few small asteroids of the desired composition, maneuver them to dock with the ship's underside, and then digest the needed raw materials to provide a steady feed of 3D printer stock inside the bowels of the ship. Simple ingest the raw materials, 3D-fabricate the parts and a new squadron of Vipers (or shuttles) comes out the other end. It's also possible that the remains of destroyed Cylon fighters, outposts and freighters ("Lost Planet of the Gods", "The Gun on Ice Planet Zero", "The Living Legend", "The Hand of God") could be captured and salvaged, recycled to also make new ships. Maybe this could be shown using 3D animation. The most interesting possibility would be showing the Galactica slowly making parts for even larger spacecraft, perhaps lesser warships to support the Galactica.

Yes, most modelers miss that. I was a huge, thick connector that ran from each flight pod to the center of the ship. The interior of the support was often seen in the show as the means where flight crews access the pods on foot or via the little trams that were in the ship.
