It is sad that wokeism reaches even into the National Park Service. These men were not murdered. It was war, people die and we don’t call that murder. Yes it is a tragedy, but it was war.

The walker Light guard Company E of the Georgia 39th was led by E. Kirby Smith at Champion Hill not Cumming. They became the “Cummings brigade” (Cumming in the video) after the siege of Vicksburg was over… My fourth great grandfather Menton Isaiah Harp (M.J in the official record) fought here and lost and eye here. He only ever fought under E. kirby Smith, he never fought with Cumming because he was captured at Vicksburg and never reenlisted after being paroled.

Hey Richard. Thanks for the comment! We wanted to share more information with you. The 39th Georgia Infantry was commanded by Colonel James Thompson McConnell throughout the Vicksburg Campaign including the action at the Battle of Baker's Creek (Champion Hill) on May 16, 1863. The 39th Georgia had been commanded by Brigadier General Thomas Taylor until early May 1863 when Brigadier General Alfred Cumming arrived and was given command of the Georgia Brigade (Taylor became Pemberton's Inspector General). Cumming indeed commanded these men through the remainder of the Vicksburg Campaign and surrendered with them on July 4, 1863. Throughout the Vicksburg Campaign, Company E (Walker Light Guards) was then commanded by Captain Henry Prentiss Osbourn who likewise surrendered with his company on July 4th. Colonel McConnell would be mortally wounded at Missionary Ridge in November 1863 and Captain Osbourn died on July 18, 1863. Major General Edmund Kirby Smith was in command of the Department of East Tennessee when the 39th Georgia (and the whole brigade) was sent to Chattanooga as reinforcements for the department in 1862. The brigade was then incorporated into Braxton Bragg’s Army of Tennessee stationed around Murfreesboro until the middle of December 1862, when it was sent as part of Major General Carter Stevenson’s division to Vicksburg. It remained as part of the Army of Vicksburg until their surrender. Upon being exchanged, they were organized and sent to Georgia as part of Braxton Bragg’s Army of Tennessee and participated in the siege of Chattanooga and the Battle of Missionary Ridge in November 1863. Here is the link to the roster for Company E (babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=wu.89059402297&view=1up&seq=312)
