  • VOICES FROM THE BATTLEFIELD - ALMEDA HART
On December 26, 1862, transport boats laden with 30,000 Federal soldiers under the command of William T. Sherman moved up the Yazoo River and disembarked on the W.A. Johnson planation.
Their objective would be the towering hills just north of the city of Vicksburg that dominated the country.
One of these soldiers was James Strong, real name Almeda Sumner Butler Hart, who followed her husband Henry into the army.
Knowing that the great battle for capturing Vicksburg was near, Almeda wrote a letter home to her mother.
This two-minute and fifty-nine second video describes a female soldier's experience during the Vicksburg campaign.
