Puppy Training 101
Here we go over some of the most important aspects to training a puppy. The most important thing that you’re doing with your puppy is getting them out to see the world and everything it has to offer. The second most important thing is finding it more rewarding to engage with you versus impulsively interacting with everything else. Remember to start a lot of this at home, especially the routine of working first, then getting free time, and then resting.

Reactivity Training: Handling a losing situation
Просмотров 9694 месяца назад
Most of us go out with our reactive dogs without a plan and hope we never see a dog. That’s no way to live nor train. Here we discuss all of what needs to be done prior to taking your dog into a potentially losing situation. All the steps you need to take proactively so that both you and your dog are conditioned to handle what’s around the corner.
How To Train Two Dogs
Просмотров 876 месяцев назад
Training one dog is hard enough, but a lot of people have more than one dog in their household. Both dogs have their own individual quirks, and when training, it is best to start one at a time. Here we go over what it looks like to start to dogs and the progression/ expectations of training.
Impulse Control Drills
Просмотров 286 месяцев назад
For any dog that is reactive or impulsive, it is crucial to teach them not to act on that first thought process. You can work on that daily when you’re playing with your dog. Work on some of this with your dog to train them to be more stable and less impulsive.

We dive into how you start shaping and conditioning your dog to move to you and give you their neck and body so that you can put things on. This is how you want to start out your work and walks right so we are building a powerful relationship.

      I have fed my dogs a raw diet of 80% muscle meat, 10% bone, 10% organ meat. Be sure to assess if they need any supplements like certain oils, however meat like fish can offer that.

    • @powerpetdogtraining
      @powerpetdogtraining 9 месяцев назад

      Absolutely right! We always train our dogs and clients to work at the first transition. Every dog and client first works on “in and outs”, where we go in and out of the car several times only getting a reward and freedom once they can engage. We advise to work at the car or door first for the first 5 minutes or until your dog is focused and engaged.

    Do you suggest training g one dog at a time or two siblings at once because they don't like being separated. My new foster dogs :)

    • @powerpetdogtraining
      @powerpetdogtraining 9 месяцев назад

      Almost all across the board, it’s most successful and important to give one dog your full attention at a time. It is absolutely necessary if you leave the safety of your home or teaching something new. However, if the separation anxiety is so severe that it’s going to cause problems with for example neighbors. Start to building separation with the dogs together. You can do this by having one crated for just a brief moment at a time, eventually working up to one being crated for the entire time while you work with the other. Similarly you can start by teaching them the “place” command, then teach them separate targets, then expanding the distance and duration on separate targets. Then having one stay one target while you work the other. But start working on separating them

    One problem many people don't realise about Dutch Shepherds is that they are in fact an old breed with 200-300 years of history behind them. And what they were primarily bred for way back when was protecting and controlling large flocks of sheep etc, ON THEIR OWN. And I mean just that. On many Dutch farms, these dogs would control their flocks without any human supervision all day, bring the flock in for the night, again on their own, stay with the animals during the night, and then, in the morning take them out to the grazing grounds again. All this, again, without human input. This has led to an extremely intelligent, independently thinking breed that doesn't take too kindly to people trying to restrict them in some way. If you don't know how to keep a Dutch Shepherd engaged, he is going to become frustrated and will try to turn the tables on you. Meaning he will want to be boss!

    • @jfkst1
      @jfkst1 8 месяцев назад

      Largely meaningless what the dog did 200+ years ago. 200+ years ago half the purebred dogs breeds now would be unrecognizable both physically and behaviorally. In the last 100 years they have been refined for police/military work.

    I really wish people would do there research b4 buying those sort of dogs. They have the puppy until about six months to a year then suddenly realize that these dogs need lots of exercise and attention then they rehome the dog as there lifes don't have the time to spend with these high intensity breeds.

    I actually have a Malinois x Dutch Shepherd mix (12.5 months) and the last time we went to a vet it was a disaster. I actually had to restrain her and she was biting/nipping on my hand when the vet wanted to inspect her ears; later on the same issue with her yearly vaccination. One of the issues, and I'm not making excuses because I need to work on this behaviour nonetheless, was that the vet himself clearly wasn't used to dealing with these dogs. The vets I've had before were first introducing themselves to her and making sure she was trusting them. So I hope that one vet didn't ruin her for future visits. Either way, I need to fix it.

    Great video! The breakdown Is fantastic, it really shows the importance of doing multiple reps again and again to desensitise anxious/reactive dogs. He might never love taking a bath, but that's OK! At least it's doable, safe, and not a crazy journey each time his owners will need to bath him 😂

    Would really love to see some more in depth videos from you on dealing with bold, high intensity dogs! I just came across your channel today and have since watched a few of your videos. I have to say, I found them incredibly helpful. I really liked your EMS and doorway methods. They're very similar to the techniques that you see most trainers using, but the way that you lay it out and explain it, the small things that you do differently, all really resonated with me. I think you just might have given me that last piece of the puzzle that I've been missing in my own training, so thank you! I'm really looking forward to seeing more from you in the future.

      Maybe they can accommodate you? Start muzzle training asap, I got a silicone basket muzzle for my Malinois, it terrified her at first, she had no training at 14 months old, but with positive reinforcement and shaping, she loves it now. She was highly reactive to people but that's becoming a past issue. Start working on his place command and stand/stay. Lots of reps, shaping, positive reinforcement and of course clear corrections.
