This might actually be working out.
Would you look at that! Hazelnuts are growing in Fermanagh despite the wind, and the rain, and summer (which has still yet to arrive).
I have started to build a drying area for the Hazelnuts. Isn't that exciting!

After a long two-and-a-half-year wait, I open up the Johnson Su bioreactor to see how well the chicken manure and woodchip had broken down. I then put the compost to the test by applying it around some hazelnut trees and in a garden bed. Four weeks after that I check in on the garden bed to see how well the plants have grown. Check out the original video that talks through how I set up the bior...

In February 2020 we planted two-year-old Cosford, Nottingham and Webb's Prize hazelnut trees. We harvested the trees in October 2021 at three years of age, to see what variety produced the most nuts and the largest nuts, at this early stage in their growth. We want to track the yield over time from the different varieties to identify which trees should be cloned for future planting and to ident...
Flail Mower vs Bush Hog for Orchard Mowing | Deleks Leo 180 Build & 30 Hour Review | Kubota M4062
Просмотров 5 тыс.3 года назад
Have you ever wondered what is better for mowing around trees, a topper/bush hog or an offset flail mower mulcher? I have used both and there is one clear winner. Gubb Farm is producing food naturally without any pesticides, fungicides, insecticides, herbicides or chemical fertilisers. This presents many challenges, with grass growth around trees being one of them. To create a good outcome, you...

In Devon we having a worm charming competition, maybe you should join us and pick up some tips
I know its quite a big area you have but you cant go wrong with a compact yractor with a mid mounted mower deck or a large diesel mower with a 60 inch cut, you'd whip around that area pretty quickly, sometimes bigger isnt better
Good luck
We need more videos on these … been waiting on an update! Looking good . How many years in now?
Great information and good idea to make the wreaths with the cuttings too. FYI, alcohol evaporates very rapidly and draws heat away from whatever it is on in the process. That's why, for example, if someone has an extremely high fever and you don't want to us medicines to lower it, you can soak a cotton ball with alcohol and swab the person's body to cool them down. This was done for babies in particular, but can help an adult be a bit more comfortable as well.
I would love to see some updates from the farm and the plants, or some reviews on the equipment you use.
Hi there Did you have a harvest in 2024? I’ve just planted 910 Hazel plants on 3,5 hectare in Denmark. I think your videos are very usefull.
Do you think any treatment or gongfu (skillful mean) that can be applied to a cutting that might not normally make it to have it have more chance? Like some kind of "grow-root” but natural
Beautiful looking hazels!🤗💛🤗
maybe use guinea pigs make a cage around the tree let them eat the grass then move to next tree. - maybe cardboard, and woodchips? but need a lot would gease prevent deers comming in? or invest in a guard dog on the field 24/7
what do you mean can't self polinated?....a lot of varieties can self polinate
Even with that 12 month regulation, you can take hay off an orchard silvopasture. Not ideal, but, surely, better than nothing. Then you put the composted manure back on the field (presumably, there's no rule against spreading compost ... that would be even more retarded than banning animals). As for the deer, maybe electric wire? People put peanut butter on the wire, deer comes and licks it once, never comes back. Either that, or call the Police. After all, the deer going into your orchard is just as much a health and safety violation as sheep or cattle grazing there:)
What helzenut type did you plant and what is the distance between trees and between the rows, please!?
Really helpful video, could I do this with hedging for a privacy boundary?
So how long did the belt last?
After 2 years, are you still happy with the deleks mower quality ?
If you take long time to edit a video try to use a more powerful laptop or pc
Hi, we have an orchard too and are trying to work out the best way to control grass growing around trees and between trees down a row. Though my farm is in Australia and the trees are of a completely different species along with the grass being different too, the problems are very similar. Right now I’m considering buying a side shifting flail mower. My plan was to use it to drive my tractor down a row, extending the mower between each tree and retracting it when at a tree. My trees are four meters apart. However you say this takes a long time and you will get an under tree disc mower to mow round each tree. Are you still going to get the disc mower? This is another option I’m considering though it is more expensive. From an agronomist’s recommendation I spray a herbicide mix growing around the trees. It works. It’s not roundup. It is a mixture of five different chemicals that combine to kill grass. I’m not a huge fan of doing it but it works and needs to be done as the grass grows quickly and grows to over two meters tall.
what spacing are your trees? i think i heard in another video that you have over 2000, thats quite a lot
The plants look much more healty then in the other video before!
Try to sell green hazelnuts as well, many Polish shops in the south would buy them, they are delicious, try Costless Shop in Dublin as well, if you do don't harvest so early, every now and then I come across green almond but the nut inside is hardly edible because it was harvested so early, same for broad beans
I thought you have done with farming
Thank you, this was well done and very useful
Nice hearing from you lad!
good to hear from ya! keep it cooking :)
Not too many grey hairs in between , must not have been too stressful since last video ! 😅
Hello Dary. It's been several years since you planted the 1st field. The trees should be entering a production level of harvest this year, right?
Good news, indeed! Always glad to hear what's happening, eager to hear more.
Good man Bob and nice to hear from you.
So good to hear from you again!
Fantastic, happy for you!❤
Can use stc-100 and turn that into a freezer into a fridge no bother!
Fantastic, keep us posted
Will do!
Excellent! So cool to see an update. How are the fruit trees doing?
About half of the fruit trees made it this far. Deer have been a real problem. I will take the camera out with me and do an update before the summer is over. I wonder will I get any fruit this? I have no idea.
Nice... Looking good...
It is a bit of relief as I was walking around the trees about a month ago wondering 'why are there no nuts'. Summer is late to arrive, which isn't helping.
Ya man... It's been a long time... Was actually thinking about you today... Was wondering when you gonna post anything... I hope some clips about the property and the trees... Good luck from Romania...
Great news 😁
Fingers crossed I will have enough to sell this year!
@@GubbFarm What is the minimum selling quantity?
Maybe 500g or 1kg bags for postal delivery or for sale at farmers markets. I was also thinking about approaching local restaurants to see if there was any interest in larger volumes, directly delivered. I need to go and sort out packaging and any words of wisdom would be appreciated.
@@GubbFarm Have you reached out to nut farmers across the border for advice? I might be wrong, but it seems like they are further ahead than in the six counties.
nice hazelnut orchard! i hope to grow at least 5 to 10 but how did all of your hazelnut trees end up as single stem? did you cut the 2nd sprouts? if so, why?
What are the tubes on the trunk. I just got some trees. Do I need. The tubes? Why such a large tree stake?
Hi, Thanks for the channel, I am truly learning a lot. I´m trying to do the same in my farm in DK (we have similar climate) but the coppice will be for firewood, I am thinking Willow, Alder, Hassel and Ash. I understand that fencing will help for roe deers and hares (we do not have rabbits here), but we do have many meadow voles. I see that you do not have tree guards for them, what is your intake about it? I am leaning towards not covering if I am planting 1000 trees and just accept the fact that some trees might die from trunk girdling in snowy/cold winters.
Hi, I understand that tall 'T' shaped poles in the field are useful for controlling voles, as it gives somewhere for predator birds to perch/hunt from. Good luck! :)
What is best to suppress weeds in the orchard between the trees?
that 12 month rule is a load of shite! that's thanks rigorous explanation
have ya tried the cactus guards? It's a metal wired cage with spikes to deter animals and livestock from leaning on it!
How's the farm going?
Try eating them when they are green with a texture like peas or broad beans, they taste nice
You need more protection using a chainsaw
Deer are also a problem for me. I use a heavier gauge wire. They still eat down the new growth and even the young branches. They have been known to push the fencing into the trees to eat the sprouts. Never safe until they grow so tall that they cannot reach. But then also so tall, I cannot reach the fruit. My only solution has been a area perimeter fence, tall enough and bright enough to slow them down. Buffalo NY USA here.
Totally agree, I tried cages to protect trees and roses in the past, constant headache
Hey there Dary, what varieties have done the best for you in the low ground?
When your trees need pruning with decent thickness of branches take the cut branches, chip them, dry the chips and you can sell them in baggies for barbequing and meat smokers. Hazel is a favorite wood used for smoking food as it produces a strong, fragrant smoke. Most alcohols have a high rate of evaporation which carries heat away from your hand.
Electric fence would help
