Did you shock yourself trouble-shooting the spark plug wires, causing your hair to stand up? (Sorry I just had to say that!) Seriously, I am impressed with your troubleshooting skills and how you figured out it was the ignition wires. You noticed that all spark plug wires are always separated from the Factory. I also found the Ford motorsport plug wires are great, reasonably priced, and cool! 😎 Have you ever considered measuring the resistance of the spark plug wires with an ohm meter? If you do, let me know what you find.
The wires from autoparts stores are junk now. I've put bosh wires from auto zone on my stock ignition d150 and it looked like a fireworks show under the hood at night.
It's fun to do, just open the hood in the dark, then start the motor. Staying away from the belt and pulleys, can see blue lightning if the wires are cracked
Great video - good explanation of the importance of a properly set transfer slot! Its also good to add info about the secondary throttle blade adjustment screw for some applications. My car wont idle high enough due to the cam / torque converter being on the tighter side - so it requires that little bit more air at idle. This is where people typically drill holes in their primaries to get the transfer slot back to where it should be; but a much better first go at adjusting would be on the secondaries before making modifications to the carb :) Cheers!
I remember seeing bad plug wires light up at night. It was easy to find a bad one. In the old days, Plugs, Wires, coils, rotor buttons and caps failed often. Tune ups was a way of life.
Why would you spend 3x as much for a Pertronix distributor and use cheap generic 7mm plug wires? thats like buying $2000 Ping golf clubs and then using old range balls to golf with!, lmao OR putting 2 stroke lawnmower gas in a race engine
You may also try putting a piece of split wire loom tubing on the wires to help insulate them. I had plug wires running around the back of the engine on my 1999 Mustang and I covered the wires with tubing mainly to prevent the plug wires from rubbing on anything that could damage them. I also buy decent performance plug wires from Summit Racing rather than standard wire from local parts stores. BTW: Nice car.
Get new wires won't have problems dummy
Great video. I’ve been super ocd about keeping my wires isolated
Sweet car man. Good video.
@@LyleMyers thanks!
I've heard about that happening too. Never experienced that on mine. I did have a miss at highway speeds once that would go away at lower speeds. Turns out a wire in the MSD 6AL box had gone loose from connector. Air blowing into engine bay at highway speeds caused it to move, causing the miss. Just an fyi if you ever experience something like that.👍
@@1968fordman That’s interesting, thanks!
This was common knowledge back in the late '60s . It's funny how these current day gurus overlook this. Find yourself some very old hot rodder, he'll show you many old tricks.
@@YouScroob Yes, much knowledge gets lost from generation to generation. I think that’s why it’s important to keep these old cars alive, and keep learning about them. Thanks!
I never thought a few wires could cause that much of a problem, informative video!
I noticed your Park City, Utah shirt. Park City is not far from me and is a cool place to visit. I have been fighting a dead spot on my Mustang. Blaming the single plane intake and big cam for causing the "off Idle dead spot!" I will try the vacuum gauge trick to see if that would help. Thanks for the great tip!
@@toolchanic4285 Yeah, I got that shirt at goodwill😂 I live in Indiana. I hope you get it figured out!
You mean to tell me that I have in the past I have been pulling oil pans the hard way all this time!! Great idea! Also, that cross-member gets in the way when pulling the engine out. In situations like this, I like to weld a tube inside where the bolt goes through. This lets you tighten the bolts more without collapsing the tube. Good Job!
@@toolchanic4285 Yes! We thought about adding a tube to the inside but that metal beam we used was super thick and we didn’t feel it was necessary to add more support. Thanks!!!
SO is this worth any HP over stock 390FE truck manifold? i understand i will lose 50plus lbs off front of truck, BUT its a truck so 50 on 4000lb truck isnt that much unless it comes with some power/tq too?
@@WilliamMunny-d8s Yes, it’s way better than a regular truck manifold. It’s a medium riser intake for starters which means the floor of the port is taller than your truck intake. The plenum on the sidewinder is the biggest of the factory ford intakes. And the runners themselves are visibly bigger than a truck intake. You might sacrifice a little low end torque but on certain combinations you should be able to gain about 30-40 horsepower. If your cam is paired accordingly. Hope this helps!

Never had a holley carb, but thanks for the info!👍
I haven't given those slots a second look since the 70's. I learned something new today. We used to change the springs in the distributor to get the points plate to zero out. I never thought about the plate maxing out the other way after putting a stronger or weaker spring in. I'd say fuel injection is easier but there's probably more trail and error in that too.
Ermm what the sigma
@@thatkidanson8677 more like what the carburetor 😜
Your theory does not fit with the Holley engineers book. Did you forget about accelerator pumps for off idle trandition.
@@robertknott7697 I didn’t forget about them. I probably should’ve mentioned them more but I’ve always heard they are more of a cover up more than anything. That they are more for when you whack open the throttle and cause a vacuum drop that gives no booster signal. The accelerator pump mechanically shoots fuel rather than allowing low pressure to syphon it out. Also the reason they are called transfer slots in the first place is because they transfer from idle to cruise in light throttle situations. So yes and no. Accelerator pumps are super important but they are intended more to cover up large drops in vacuum rather than get you off of idle. At least that’s the way I understand them😂
You said ftlbs wrong. Lol
That is a highly optioned truck for the year. You are the best farm mechanic with amazing zip tie skills!!
Thank! Yes, my zip tie skills amaze even myself.😜 Yeah, I think the truck had about every option. I need to save my money and get a Marti report for it so I can see for sure. It’s super cool nonetheless😎 Thanks again!
@@itllrun6030 the comment “my zip tie skills amaze even myself” about killed me! When I read that, I couldn’t stop laughing! 😂😂
I like the roller spring perches, I will try them out on my 71 Mustang. Speaking of your p/s leak. If the hose end is a flare, the hose end or the fitting may be damaged where it seals on the flange. look for cracks or imperfections on the sealing part of the flange. If the flange is damaged, they sell a copper flange gasket that you can use to repair the fitting or hose end. Hoses you can not buy or custom work, and have the room. I have had the steel tube ends cut off the old hoses and flanged the end of the tube you cut off. I then would have a hose built to fit the ends to the new flange. You Basically change the hose ends to adapters to JIC fittings. I hope that makes sense? It would be cool to see a video of you rebushing the throttle plate. My 71 Mustang has always had a whistle I never could figure out. Let us know when you figure it out! I Like your videos!
Awesome!! thanks!! I will make a video on the throttle plate, I’ll be taking it apart again next week anyway.😂 Thanks for the advice on the power steering! My local auto parts store makes custom hydraulic lines and we priced one out with correct fittings and such so that it would work and it would be near $100. So I held off doing that for the time being. I did some more research and finally found a company online that made almost exactly the same hose I have. It seems like a good company. It was $80 for the high pressure and the return line, so I bought it. I’m on vacation with my family this week so I haven’t been able to work on it. But I’ll have a video about it as soon as I get home. Thanks so much for always commenting on my videos and sharing your advice. I always look forward to what you might have to say. It means a lot. Thanks again!😎

Oh, the joys of power steering leaks! Been there done that! As soon as I can I'm gonna convert mine over to true power steering! So tired of dealing with that system! Good luck with yours!
Thanks!! Yeah, it’s just not a good design at all😂
Our open tracker roller perches just came in the mail yesterday for our 69 torino bracket car . Can’t wait to try them out
Great mod, definitely worth it, I love mine and very pleased with them. The reason it lowered the car alittle is because the old bushing style had that hard rubber bushing it has to flex where as with the bearing it’s free flowing and has a lot more freedom to move and settle, which helps with handling. One thing you could try for your power steering leaking issue, if the auto part stores don’t have what you need, you could try places like cj pony parts, look at hoses/fittings for 67-70 mustangs with power steering as they used the same power assisted steering like the fairlane/ Torino’s did. Good luck, keep up the great work.
Thanks!! Yeah, that's my next step is to see what other vehicles might have a power steering hose that will work. I saw your Shelby drop mod on your Fairlane and it looks great! I might do the same thing to mine here soon. Thanks again!!
@@itllrun6030 no problem, glad to help, very cool that’s awesome! I’d definitely recommend doing it, big improvement on handling. Looking forward to seeing your video on that, good luck, thanks for watching. You’re welcome.

As long as I can remember, even younger than you, that thing never had power steering. Idk why but it was a pain to drive… lolol
Yep, the power steering pump and everything else is there, but someone pulled the power steering belt off at one point. So I don’t know, maybe it leaks😂🤷♂️
@@itllrun6030 If the pump leaks. Just buy a seal kit for it. That style of pump never wears out and you can’t kill them! I had a 74 F100 that blew a hose out in the middle of nowhere and drove it home. It still worked after I replaced the hose.

How did you get vacuum for your power brakes?
The carb cheater comes with a spacer with two manifold vacuum ports. I just have my brake booster vacuum line running to the rear vacuum port on the carb.

Cool car! Rick from RCindustry sent me.
Son, I have had a 69 Torion GT for over 33 years, the noise you are hearing is probably your A arm bushings, as they get old, they start squeaking, you can try to hit them with a lubricant spray, but most of the time it's just time to change them. A hint, if you do change them is to install 90 deg zerk fittings in them, that way you don't have to put a hole in the shock towers to lube them and can grease them every time you change the oil and make the front bushings and suspension parts last longer. I have gone thru many engine, tranny combinations over the years, awaiting the time to once again strip the body and paint it again, thank goodness the only rust it has had is the lower rear quarters and trunk extension pieces. This time the engine awaiting on the stand is a mild 514 with a mild stall equipped C6, good luck.
Sounds cool! The a arm bushings are new. But from china probably. The spring perches were even cheaper. I'm just gonna replace the spring perches and then go from there. Thanks!
Cool video! One tip I wanted to let you know about is lube the hood springs at least twice a year. I had one on my car go bad and nearly bent the hood. I've heard/seen stories of them bending the hood when you close it. WD40 will do. Your spring perches squeaking reminded me of that. Lol
Will do!!
Roller spring perches are what you want. $225 a pair from Opentracker Racing, worth every penny
That’s what I’m planning on doing. They look pretty cool. Thanks!
