    Ihave been really interested in making a wet felt bowl on a ball and bought your book ( I waited awhile for it as it was sold out at first!) I followe dyour instructions but I am afraid I didn't do well . I guess I should have purchased the course instead. Once I 'recover" from my disappointment, perhaps I will try again. You make wonderful objects.

    I’ve got your first book and the Big Bertha ball. The ball is pumped up to a circumference of 32 inches at the moment, can I really get it to 37 inches? And will that be big enough for a cat cave? Now I can see I need to get your new book after easter 🐰

    • @NatashaSmartTextiles
      @NatashaSmartTextiles 4 месяца назад

      Hi, thanks for watching and buying my book! Yes you should be able to get the Big Bertha ball up to 37”. I’m not sure that size will make a great cat cave though, it will probably still be a bit small (remember your shrinkage is going to be around 25%). I’ve got a cat cave design coming in my new book and for that I used a much larger exercise ball (the yellow one in this video). So yes you might want to wait until book 2! And in the meantime maybe try out your Big Bertha on a large bag, bowl or basket?

    I like that you have books and on line courses. I was wondering if you can use coarse fibers from sheep that have been raised for food. We don't have many mills in Quebec, Canada and farmers often throw away the woollen fleece, because there is no value for them in trying to use the fleece which is not very soft.

    • @NatashaSmartTextiles
      @NatashaSmartTextiles 4 месяца назад

      Hi, thanks for watching! I think the honest answer is that you would need to try out the sheep’s wool and see how it felts. Fibres from different sheep breeds are all different, so it’s only by doing a test that you’d know. So you could try felting a small flat piece of felt with the fibre and see what happens! Good luck!

    Question: Is it necessary to keep changing the soapy water to be very hot? Thanks!

    • @NatashaSmartTextiles
      @NatashaSmartTextiles 5 месяцев назад

      Hi Linda, I generally use warm/lukewarm water to start and keep the same water throughout the main felting stage, til prefelt stage at least once I know all the fibres and embellishments are bonded together. There’s a risk if you introduce hot water too early that the main fibre will just felt to itself before the curly locks and yarns have had a chance to bond with it. So stick to lukewarm water. Once you’re at prefelt stage and have cut out the purse flap and given it a rub, and all the fibres and locks are staying in place, then you’re into the fulling/shrinking stage. If your project is being slow to thicken/shrink, then is the time to maybe refresh the project with hand hot soapy water as the heat will help the shrinkage. You can also do alternate hot and cold rinses at the end to help shrink the felt. I hope that helps! And if you’d like more info and tips you might like my book Wet Felting, it’s available on Amazon!

    • @NatashaSmartTextiles
      @NatashaSmartTextiles 5 месяцев назад

      Hi, thank you for watching! I genuinely don’t think it makes any difference which way up you put the bubble wrap! Some felters I think prefer the project next to the bubbles as the bubbles hold extra water next to the project. I prefer the smooth side next to the project on the basis that it disrupts the project less. But I honestly don’t think it matters!

      @NatashaSmartTextiles 9 месяцев назад

      Hi, thank you for watching, and for your kind feedback, so glad you enjoyed it! So in terms of adding decoration afterwards, I’m assuming you don’t mean adding more by wet felting (as that won’t really work as the wool fibres will now all be felted together). But you could definitely use other techniques on top, such as needle felting, stitching etc. In fact I always think that it’s the layering of different techniques and materials which makes pieces even more interesting! I’m so thrilled with the outcome that I’m going to do something similar in a different colourway. That should cover alternative Christmas cards for nearest and dearest! And after that I’m going to make myself a festive felt wreath! Many thanks for your comprehensive tutorials and generosity in sharing them - and your knowledge - free of charge.

      Thank you for your lovely feedback Sue, it honestly makes my day (and makes it all worthwhile) to know that felters are enjoying my tutorials and feeling inspired to make their own creations! Your small hoop idea for Christmas greetings is a great one (I can’t remember if I said in the tutorial, but I get little fabric Happy Christmas labels printed, which I glue to the back of the hoops before sending them out for Christmas, so they make proper greetings cards and keepsakes for the tree). I’m impressed that you’ve got yourself ready for Christmas already (sadly I’m always finishing mine the week before!), though I’ve sent out so many hoops in the past I think I’m going to have to come up with a different idea this year!🤣 Thanks again for watching and commenting!

    Incredibly useful and helpful tutorial. Thanks so much! I am looking forward to the in-person workshop I have booked with you next year. In the meantime I feel equipped to explore some techniques at home

      Hi Sue, thank you so much for your lovely comments (and for getting my book!). I’m so pleased to hear that you’re feeling better equipped to delve into the world of wet felting, be warned that it’s addictive though!🤣

    Als je in Nederland woont en niet op een cursus kan. vind ik de uitleg .niet zo uitgebreid .jammer

      Hallo, bedankt voor je reactie, hoewel ik niet precies weet wat je vraag is. De cursus is helaas alleen in het Engels, maar als je Engels spreekt, kun je absoluut overal ter wereld aan de cursus deelnemen (de link staat in de details onder de video). Als je geen Engels spreekt, heb ik wel een andere cursus beschikbaar om een vilten rugzak te maken (die kan worden omgezet in een tas) en is ondertiteld in andere talen, waaronder Nederlands. Als u mijn website natashasmarttextiles.co.uk bezoekt, vindt u daar meer details en links. Ik hoop dat dat helpt?
