Imagine This!! ExJW's come together and start sit-ins together at Kingdom Halls in groups. Don't start a commotion or a disturbance just Go and show the colors of of hurt and pain that they've caused. Talk to the Elders after the meeting. Bring a Film Crew from a local New Station once the movement is big enough. Do this at Assembly Halls, Do this at District Conventions. Have a Badge that identifies you as an EX JW. SHARE YOUR STORIES while you're among them by talking with each other even if they won't talk to you. Make it impossible to ignore us.

I agree with Cobe. High Control Religion is a better description. The Witness aren't control by ONE man at the top. They aren't giving all their wealth to the Organization like say Scientology does buy putting their theology behind a paywall. But it does seek to isolate you from your friends and family and it resist facts that aren't generated by the organization. Keep in mind anything can be called a CULT. You Husband, Your Family, Your Job, Government, Military and even social media ... they all have aspects of CONTROL that would make some people uncomfortable.

Thanks for inviting a mental health professional. The Witnesses and other high control groups portray psychotherapy as dangerous, perhaps because the therapeutic process encourages one to self-reflect. This discussion helps demystify and normalize the actual process. I am a late Gen Xer who left the JWs in the late 1990s to attend college. I got a degree in developmental psychology and holistic health. I've had a full career in the non-profit sector and corporate philanthropy, and recently pivoted my attention to focus on community mental health. I now work in academia doing research in a medical school, and am working towards a PsyD degree. Although it's been a long time since I've been a member of the JWs, I think I can trace my passion for justice to the unfairness I saw and experienced in the organization: the poor treatment of women and other minorities, promotion of authoritarian parenting styles, life threatening beliefs and practices (e.g., blood policy, shunning), and intellectual, emotional, and spiritual control, etc. Less discussed in JW circles is the damge the group does to the formation of attachment relationships in childhood, which has lifelong effects. By my memory, I rarely encountered Witnesses who were securely attached or who had healthy emotional regulation. How could they be, when the threat of punishment loomed for every life choice, including mistakes? I am still working on growing in my attachment to others and how I manage my emotions. The roots of the difficulties are partly attributable to those early interactions with other insecurely attached, psychologically unhealthy Witnesses. Great conversation!

Around 1:23:25 Dr Ryan refers to the verse that is repeated often do not stumble your brother. He then says that implies that the choices of other people are your responsibility! That hit home because my JW family & friends made a choice to treat me cruelly and condemn me for the choice I made to stay away from them.

I agree with Dr Ryan’s definition and Wendy’s comments on Guilt & Shame. However, the two words are used differently by the organization within the JW religion. They set up activities, ways we SHOULD feel, and THOUGHTS we MANDATORILY must have and guilt us if we don’t measure up. Of course the measuring line is always shifting. Then our family/cong/elders/inner programmed mind shame us into conformity. The shame also includes the possible punishments we will receive if we do not conform. The weapons of shame that are used are: gossip about you, soft shunning, being left out/over looked, being taken in the back room, local needs directed at you, deletions and disfellowshipping with the announcements insinuating you did something terrible. If everyone is treating you worse then a mass murderer then your self image and feelings of shame and guilt are amplified - except you didn’t do anything to deserve that treatment. And then of course they say God sees all your actions, desires and secrets and will make them come to light. It’s enough to drive you to suicide-

Only people in a religious cult would follow the inhumane and cruel practice of shunning family members who leave the religion. I know jws who dont agree with shunning.They have left the religion to be with family and friends.I know others who secretly meet with them.I am very glad that governments are stepping in to protect peoples human rights.I believe in religious freedom but when religious rules deny people the right to see their children, grandchildren, mothers and fathers they have gone too far!!

Do you know if Dr. Lee accepts VA insurance? I've always looked for a a form JW therapist. I'm so tired of my focus in therapy being explaining the beliefs I grew up vs the damage those beliefs have caused and continue to cause.

Many diseases are caused by stress and this organization going to the meetings all the time causes stress even not to talk of the daily assignments we had to do which brings more anxiety ,I did research when I was having symptoms and realised trauma was causing my health issues, doctors could not help so I took it upon myself to help myself started eating well saw my health improved a little bit but immediately realised that the meetings and the relationship I was having were having effects on my health I stopped and I immensely saw improvement, when the elders asked me why I was missing meetings I told them I realised the coming to the meetings was causing more stress ,they told me how come because if I have love for Jehovah I will not say because the meetings is suppose to refresh me😢,I didn't mind them I choose me and continue to choose me because the truth is no one cares if you do not take care of yourself

Yes I really relates with her,also African , attracted to this religion because of the resurrection hope, also had health issues but when I immediately stopped attending meetings my health issues resolved, peace of mind is underrated

I understand how difficult it is to deconstruct your life after such an ordeal. There are 3 miillion members in in WMSCOG in 175 countries and the number is growing rapidly. I never realized how many cults there are out there until I went on the internet to do my own research on the wmscog. I only wish, that I did more research on the internet at the beginning, however, we were frowned down on going on the internet. I was told, that Heavenly Moher would cry and have a broken heart if I ate from the tree of knowledge and not of the tree of life. I and I did not want to die Spiritually.
