End of the Evening Rush at Clybourn Junction. Crystal Clear Skies and Straight-On Views
Просмотров 20714 дней назад
Clybourn Junction is the first stop after Chicago for the Metra Union Pacific North and Northwest Lines, and is the location where the former Chicago & Northwestern Harvard Subdivision and Kenosha Subdivision split. Despite the presence of large billboards atop of buildings that block what was once an outstanding view of the downtown Loop skyline, this is still a great spot for railfanning beca...

A Gorgeous Sunday on the BNSF Racetrack. Lots of Trains and Beautiful Station Depots
Просмотров 27328 дней назад
While the train density along the BNSF Racetrack is not nearly as great on a Sunday as it is during the week, there is still a good variety of freight and passenger train action. However, in addition to the actual railroad action, the station depots along this line are truly beautiful works of architecture and deserve attention in their own right. These structures, many of which date back to th...

Railfanning the evening rush hour on the MBTA Framingham/Worcester Line at Wellesley Hills station on a beautiful unseasonably warm day. Local trains make all stops from Boston to Framingham, before ...
Weekend Railfanning at Mansfield. Super Fast Trains and Gillette Stadium Extra
Просмотров 2863 месяца назад
I don't usually do railfanning adventures on the weekends for the simple reason that the train density is significantly lower than weekdays. However this was the first time that I've had an opportunity to witness a special move that doesn't occur in regular service. When there are events at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, the MBTA runs special trains up the Framingham Secondary from Providence. Th...
Special Feature: Snowy Trains in Shirley
Просмотров 3406 месяцев назад
In January 2024, southern New England saw their first widespread significant snowfall in over a year (the previous winter did not produce much if any accumulating snow). The day after the storm, I ventured out to Shirley, MA where they received 10-12 inches of snow to capture some snowy train scenes. I chose Shirley because it is located along a busy freight corridor and also part of the outer ...

Nice location. The signal bridges add to the photogenic qualities of the place. THANK YOU again for the detailed description attached here. Most youtubers assume everyone is familar with every location. That is very short-sighted.

In a few weeks I am driving from Ohio to spend several days railfanning at these locations. I REALLY appreciate your excellent written description and share your love of architecture. Stations form a backdrop for the trains and enhance the visual enjoyment. Any tips or advice when filming there? I plan on spending six or more hours per day at each location. Thanks again!

Six hours at each station might be a little excessive, but my only real advice would to always be alert and always pay attention... during the rush hours expresses can sneak up on you seemingly out of nowhere and freight trains usually don't trigger the platform warning systems. Also just be aware that during the week ridership is extremely high so I'd recommend shooting from the opposite platform from where the train is arriving if possible, otherwise you will likely have a herd of humanity obstructing your shots (and some people are kinder/nicer about being videotaped up close than others)

Not yet... I don't go west of Framingham very often because I currently live in Newton and there is much more service to the Newton stations from the inner trains than the outer trains, which frequently run at least semi-express.

doesn't mean anything about the tier 3, back in the early 2000s they used to run tier 0 gp40s

    • @massbytrainmpw
      @massbytrainmpw 8 месяцев назад

They still run the GP40s on the north side, and occasionally the Fairmount Line. The issue is all of the tunnels along the Southwest Corridor and the Old Colony Main Line. For the longest time Back Bay station had some of the worst air quality in the entire city of Boston, and Quincy Center station was pretty bad too. Both stations now have upgraded ventilation systems, but they're still trying to keep the worst of the polluters out of the underground portions.
