  • I don't usually do railfanning adventures on the weekends for the simple reason that the train density is significantly lower than weekdays. However this was the first time that I've had an opportunity to witness a special move that doesn't occur in regular service. When there are events at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, the MBTA runs special trains up the Framingham Secondary from Providence. These trains switch over to the southbound track at Mansfield and then diverge off the Northeast Corridor. There is regular commuter service to and from the Gillette Stadium park & ride facility but this service operates only from Boston via the Franklin Line through Norwood. Direct service to Foxboro from Providence, Attleboro, and Mansfield is limited to events only. The Framingham Secondary is a freight line that connects the Northeast Corridor in Mansfield with the Franklin Line in Walpole and ultimately the Worcester Line in Framingham. The route is heavily used by CSX Transportation though mostly in the overnight hours, and includes a section where it traverses the remains of Medfield Junction, which at one time was the site of a large station and interlocking where the Millis Branch (that connected with today's Needham Line) intersected with what is today the Framingham Secondary. Sadly very little of the junction remains today, with the station building demolished and several parts of the wye overgrown.
Of course, Mansfield is perhaps best known for being one of the Northeast Corridor's straightaways where Acela Express trains reach 150 MPH and Northeast Regional trains reach 125 MPH. There is plenty of high speed action in this video in addition to the commuter trains.
