RetroTour: Exploring my Panasonic KX-P2123 Color Dot Matrix Printer!
So am I right in thinking that I could mount a network share from my NAS onto the folder structure on the local storage. In effect creating a network USB drive ?
It's been a little while since I made this video, but I think that should work! There are of course some known limitations with any sharing solution, which I think I cover off on in the vid.
The missing test is to check if it's compatible with the FDD drive, as that would make it extremely useful if (as in my case) you never use the CDROM.
Different bus, it'll be just fine with a FDD.
@@RetroTechChris Thanks mate, I'll try it. I couldn't find anywhere what ATA protocol this chipset uses, as there is a known issue with some IDE adapters that get stuck at ATA33. Probably the LTE5000 doesn't even reach that speed, right? This issue is known for IDE to mSATA adapters, it may not apply to IDE to CF
@@feanor19166 yea I can't say I have done any benchmarks or looked into which ATA spec these machines use.

You're a Freaking w!zARd Larry! Well Done Sir
Haha, thanks, yea this is fun stuff for sure.
Does that HX Setup utility reside in ROM or on disk? Was that utility initially supplied with Tandy 1000 computers when new?
@@Lachlant1984 it's on disk. Yea, I presume it was provided with the computer when new.
Those look better than my non working iPhone 6
Hah!
So many memories. I had a Tandy 1000 back in the early 90s and I wanted a bernoulli drive so badly but it was so expensive. Even today, I am kinda jealous you have one!😊😊
@@SHO1989 it's a neat little device!

would you happen to have backed up the bios on that BT-410A? its missing on mine 😢
I think I gifted this card to @jdmcs. I'll point him here!
The ROMS have been added to The Retro Web by @jdmcs. Thanks!
@@RetroTechChris I saw that, and just wanted to say thanks and great job! My BT-410A is still in the post but at least i know I can play with it now once it arrives 😅

I remember using ICLA Novell Netware on an IBM PS/2 in my tenth grade keyboarding class 31 years ago. Great memories.
Extra delightful when watched in 2024.
Haha, for sure. It's a bit of "nostalgia about nostalgia" too since there's now a new venue. I have fond memories of hanging out with my friends at that old rundown Clarion. I missed going to the show this year, but I hear the new venue is second to none!
My Epson LQ-570+ beats it 😁 (But no color 😅)
@@brunorocca5391 I'm not really looking for a competition here.
Do you know if that Iomega SCSI card is bootable? I see that it has a ROM on it, so it might be possible. You might also want to try the VGM player that I recently released for Tandy 1000. I mostly tested it on a vanilla Tandy 1000 HX.
@@TalesofWeirdStuff I believe it is!

@@johnvanwinkle4351 oh awesome! Yea it is a fun workflow to try!
From the very beginning, I spotted the 'Quiet Printing' tag on the printer and wondered how quiet it would be ;), In fact i do n8t want a quiet dot matrix because it would defeat the purpose...It has to be loud :) for the genuine experience. I loved to see the table shaking while the baby was printing... In short, I need one! Great Vid
Haha, very nice! Did you catch what I did at 12:18?
@@RetroTechChris , not really. A new video?
@@astroverbotjulia9004I drew a box around the word "quiet" 😂
Greetings Chris, great video for SEPTandy 2024. 👍👍 Next month I'm going to give my SX a few upgrades, like an NEC v20 Co-processor (NOS), a 2MB EMS Card for a little extra performance, an I/O Card for more options, a No-Slot Clock (RTC) and an XT-IDE to SD (512MB) for my HDD needs as the HardCard in mine fails to read. I can't wait to get it upgraded and be able to start using it more regularly. I'm going for more of an enhanced 1000sx versus an Ultimate SX of sorts, possibly how Tandy themselves may have done it back in the day, minus SD for storage as that wasn't a thing back then. 😀👍👍
@@Zion767318 oh, fantastic! Yours is going to be supercharged 😂. What a great project!
@@RetroTechChris I have a CM-5 monitor that I received when I purchased it a while back, I wish I could get a good condition CM-11 though.

Great video. I'm thinking of doing this to make a bootable SD Card for use with my Tandy 1000 SX. 👍👍
@@Zion767318 that's fantastic. I just released a video on my Tandy 1000 SX here on the channel!
Very nice video, what was the dot matrix printer you used? (I'm looking for one for my 8088. You are right the floppy drive makes a very specific sound

10:25 hahaa, love how it struggles with Solitare but then Out Run isn't too bad! What a nice setup 😍
Yea! I think the drivers I am using for Windows 3.0 actually come from Windows 2.0, so they probably aren't optimized. But yea it is pretty terrible!
Awesome to see you doing another video! Super nice Tandy. I never used the Bernoulli drives they look cool. I always ended up with SyQuest drives.
@@RacerX- thank you! It's great to hear from you!!
This brings back memories. My 1st pc was a 1000sx, believe it had a co processor, expanded memory, 30mb hd card, both size floppy drives, 9600 modem, cga monitor, 9 pin dot matrix printer. Deskmate II software - ha.
@@NYCamper62 you had the works!! I love it!
Great video Chris! What a beautiful Tandy to have! Really enjoyed that Bernoulli drive stuff too. Never heard about that format before.
Thank you! Yea, I had only heard about Bernoulli drives prior to getting this Tandy, had never used one! They really do have a lot of similarities with Zip drives!

@@RetroTechChris thanks pal, i will keep my eyes peeled,
Awesome! - Amazing setup. - Tandy is at the very top of my list, above any computer or console, but I never owned one. - As a child I played Larry on my moms work computer - which was an IBM but I have totally fallen in love with the CGA mode to a SD TV. My dream is to do some classic Point & Clicking from the couch on my Sony 34" - One thing I havent seen yet is a Tandy plugged into a MT-32. Whats the ideal Tandy for maniac mansion + all those Sierra games? Seems you have the best of both world with the ability to toggle the CPU.
@@brentgreeff1115 yea, it's a sweet setup. Yea perhaps an MT-32 would add to it.. I've never used one!

I have a Tandy 1000 HX and TX. The HX is a sentimental favorite because it was the first PC compatible I ever used. However, the TX is so fast with its 286 and CF reader.
