Snowbird | Season Opener - Hard Pack and Lots O'Rocks
Great day at Snowbird Ski and Snowboard Resort. I took the low tide and hard pack conditions as an opportunity to practice my billy goating and control. One really fun thing about "bad" conditions (are there really bad conditions in skiing?) is that you can work on skills that you may have neglected. Today was all about practicing keeping the speed down and shutting it down in control after each drop, which in these conditions can be very challenging.
Freeride tip: Make sure you practice shutting it down from both turn directions, most people have a strong side and weak side with skiing. If you only turn one way after a drop to shut it down, it can severely limit your ability to navigate d...

Snowbird | Silver Fox Series - Standard air and Pistachio with my Bro
Просмотров 5592 месяца назад
Had one of the best ski days of my life with my bro. In this video we did a classic small freeride comp line that includes Standard Air and Pistachio. Many lines in the 2-4* events have one or both of these features included. #snowbird #freeride #skiing #utah #extremesports
Snowbird | Cirque Series - T2B Shot 9 to Upper Cirque Chute 4 ♦♦
Просмотров 8172 месяца назад
Epic spring day with my brother we ended up skiing Upper Cirque most the day and billy goating around Shot 9 and Scythe Chute. This line starts at Shot 9 (directly skiers left of Jaws) and takes a little transfer to Cirque Chute 4. Not sure if this goes most the season as the connection may not be skiable until late winter. #snowbird #freeride #skiing #utah #extremesports

Nice
Nice work! Excited to see a backflip next 😁
Hell yeah
perfect conditions, nice trail, nice little cliff
Wish i could try it out, looks so fun!
🔥🔥🔥
how flexy are those puppies?
I'd give them a flex rating from 0 to not enough, lol. I retired these skis for something more manageable. They were really fun on huge pow days but other than that they held me back both mentally and on the snow.
any tips on practicing "shutting off" and cleaner turns on a run like this i was on this run 2 days ago as well
I do! Interesting that you'd ask this question as I was actually training for this exact skill. Without knowing your specific situation I can only give you some general guidance, but I think general guidance is probably better than a specific tip anyway. My advise can be summed up in two areas 1. Skill acquisition 2. Fear management The main skill for shutting it down is keeping your skis in contact with the snow as much as possible and maintaining balance in uneven unpredictable terrain. This skill is most easily measured by skiing moguls. So I'd recommend spending some more time skiing and researching mogul techniques. Junior Benous, a legendary ski instructor at Snowbird once said "stiffness is the enemy of good skiing". In order to fully unlock the ability to shut it down you can't be scared of not being able to shut it down. As once you are scared all the technical abilities fly out the window and you get into fight or flight. This usually shows up as people relaxing, getting back seat, making a wrong turn, or trying to stop too fast. My fear management strategy on this day was to preview the run, looking for a good line, notes on runouts and rocks, and making a general plan that I thought would keep me safe but also be fun/cool. After my preview, I did a half gas attempt, then a full gas attempt (the one you see in the video). On my first attempt, I was actually kind of scared of the last drop as it was turning to my weak side, very steep, full of rocks and trees, and the runout would be very sketchy if I got out of control and had to straight line. After I successfully did the drop I was not longer scared and it all flowed together. Fear management techniques I use include. Preview and scope the line, break down crux sections and attempt them separately, ski with skiers better than me to show the path, practice skills in a safe place, and mental visualization. There's probably a lot more, but you get the idea. Basically the techniques are designed to take something that seems scary and remove as many unknown variables as possible. Interestingly I was super scared on even the smallest drops a year ago, I just froze and my heart rate skyrocketed at the idea of my skis leaving the ground on purpose. I didn't know if it was just my personality, but set out to gradually train it out. Now I'm not scared at all of small drops, exited to do medium drops, and hesitant a larger drops/but not terrified. All this to say fear is a trainable skill. Hope this helps! .
Low tide
Great skiing man!! What skis are you on?
Thanks! They are the enforcer 110 free, which are no longer being made, 😢. Going to ski on a new ski this year and I'm already loving it.
Never able to get these conditions 😢
Baby Kong! 🦍 a snowbird classic!
When was this filmed
This spring (2024)
Get it!
That was sick man. I don't think I could ever nut up to try one.
What length are these skis? Probably perspective but they look quite short
They are a 182 cm park ski.
super sick
This is a good one
the cirque series is good!
Middle and Lower Primrose are burners no matter what you are coming off, let alone Great Scott! Great run man.
Nice video. Hopefully will get some turns with you this coming season.
Hit me up! I'm always looking for people to ski with.
Snowbird has some serious runs!
Nah I know you did not just piss and the top of flux
YOU MADE IT LOOK TOUGH !! HAR. TYFS, WAY TOO LIVE
where is this? might have to try it this season
You should! If you take Gad 2 and go straight of the lift on the bassackwards cat track, then start looking on your left after a 100-300 yards. This one is called little kong, there is also big kong, which from the top seems ridiculously huge. Little kong is just 50 yards down the cat track from big kong and looks like a perfect jump between two trees. It's a one hit wonder and the landing is on the flatter side.
@@benovesonOh nice. Love gad 2. Been looking for more small/medium cliffs/drops at alta and snowbird. This looks like a fun goal
Hi i hope you have a good day! i hope that when you scroll past this video you Will hope another person a good day like i did. and reply if you had a good day yesterday. this is number 13 of nice comments i have posted today By the way i only count the comments on videos with Les than 15 comments so i know someone saw it.
Had patrol watch me drop some good ones at Wolf Creek, glad they were there, like a lifeguard
god my east coast brain can't even comprehend snow that looks that beat up but is also still THAT skiable. I need to move out west before i get to old to do shit like this
Love great scott
Snowbird is the best
I remember skiing all thses runs
cool dude, good luck with it. i can do it pretty easily on tramp but feels scary to jsut send it on a jump, ive only been skiing for a year
Yo dude! Lmk when you come to blade at woodies! I work there every week Friday through Monday. Would love to get some reps in and figure some things out together. (I can cork 3 like nothing on tramp but I don’t think I’ve ever properly done it on the blades.)
Right on! Let's do it. I'll hit you up.
Are you booking private Tramp time at Woodward? I find every time I go the trampolines are crowded with children.
Tuesday night is adult night!
🤫 but seriously, come say hi. Also if you are looking for a group of other likeminded freeride folks to ski with next season or just share your psych, we also have a discord for people based in SLC...the SLC Freeride Club.
So fun!
Never skied Alta or Snowbird, but it really seems like Snowbird has way better terrain yet lots of people seem to rank Alta consistently higher than snowbird. I know the snow is a little better but Snowbird’s terrain just looks so much better am I wrong?
I grew up skiing Snowbird, and have only skied Alta a handful full of times. So I'm a bit biased. But from my observation and talking to people these are the general differences. - Snow fall/quality - they share a boundary and elevation. Don't think there is a significant difference. - terrain - both have enough world class terrain. For a life time. The only thing I've noticed is at Alta there is a bit more hiking and traversing to get to the normal zones. I personally ski snowbird for my knowledge of the terrain and because it's my childhood resort. - vibe - Alta wins hands down. Think bob Marley and Grateful Dead. Although I love snowbird, the vibe is more like death metal. Be prepared to be pushed out of the tram or yelled at. I take my daughter to the bird and it was a common occurrence for people to get angry at us when we took more than 10 sec to get out of their way. - operations - the bird has been struggling to open terrain and keep the lifts working. Not sure why, but Alta doesn't have the same problems.
They're basically the same terrain, so I say 6 Alta and 1/2 dozen Snowbird. Alta has a little more old school feel, and Snowbird is a little more corporate, but who really cares? You're there to ski. I prefer the Alta crowd, but not by much. If you prefer no snowboarders, Alta is your place.
what are those black skis that dude is on?
Old Moment Bobby Tours - aka Wildcat Tours! @momentskiusa
you should make a video with every cirque line but with the names like shot 1 etc and scythe chute ect
you hump the air? no one ever told me that. I tried to throw my feet and grab my knees and landed on my head.
Ooff, landing on head is not fun. Yes, ideally you should pop and push your hips forward. This was a tip that was new to me too, and I learned it in my prep! Even though in this video I didn't end up doing this, lol. It's something I'll work on in the future. The motion should be very similar to a backflip of the tramp.
Looking really strong after getting shot out of that straight-line. Next season will be killer for you!
Thanks! For some reason in my head I always feel pretty limit and out of control. Then when I watch the video, I'm a little bummed I seem too in control, lol. I think I did reach a new level of fitness and confidence on this one though. I definitely wouldn't have done this one earlier in the season in these conditions.
@@benoveson Right on yeah I definitely noticed a difference from early this season till now. In control is good though ha ha
Big fan
My new hero (I am 43)!!!
Congrats!
I like the clockwise practice you are doing too. I think that is helpful. Really feeling like you’ve mastered the 360 in both directions.
For sure, unnatural spins are a great way to improve the basics. Also if you are at a resort with a lot of side hits. Like Snowbird. It can make the left and right side hits more fun as it's much easier to spin the direction of the carve.
Awesome late season snow!
Super clean! Nicely done!
Thank you! Cheers!
Good stomps!!!😤
Well done!
Looks fun!
YEAH BUDDY! Was that your first attempt ever?
I tried once in high school, but it's been 23 years since then. This was my first try since then.
@@benoveson landing it first attempt is wild
I was pretty stoked! Need to get back up there and get more reps under my belt.
