My first experience of Glencoe was driving from Glasgow in 1966 in a Triumph Spitfire, hood down, heater blasting in fresh snow. The glen was magical then and although a LOT busier now, still my favourite place on earth.

Hey David, congrats on 900 subs man :) Searched your channel after seeing your post in the Darkroom and really like your video here! Totally agree with you, since I personally don't need everything cinematic when I do my videos. Often it is for me better to get the shot instead of an idea of cinematic, which I in the end can't apply, since I struggle to set everything up. The Pocket 3 is an easy to go camera and I use it like that with auto exposure. But I do use D-log M :D

Just bring a ND 32 or 64 and pop it into the holding slot in the hard case. Only bring it out when it’s harsh midday sun. Otherwise let your iso do the lifting. I did have an issue recently on a hike and came out of the woods and my footage was completely bleached white. I didn’t have my NDs with me. Doh! Surprised though my iPhone was just fine to film there.

Great video and photos David. I did a similar trip in 2020 just before the last lockdown. I think I was the only person on Skye. It was a hard drive right off a 12 hour shift.i I did a wee video on my channel but it’s not anything like yours.

One thing I would say, is that D-Log on the Pocket 3 isn't great if you're shooting backlit human faces. Even with grading to bring things back, in some lighting situations like that, the results can still be a bit "meh". The normal profile performs tone mapping, which on other cameras is overdone, but on the Pocket 3 works really well. So, if you're shooting backlit faces, it seems to handle it much better. The Normal colour profile captures the full dynamic range possible due to the way in which it uses tone mapping, so it's a bit of a myth that D-log gives extra dynamic range. I usually find that what most people think of as grading is simply applying a LUT and doing basic hue, saturation, and shadow adjustment. All of which can be done perfectly well with the Normal profile. For the vast majority of people, it's FOMO that keeps them using log recording modes, rather than any real limitations of the Normal picture profile. The footage that you shot here is a perfect illustration that it's beautiful light and interesting locations that make video look great, not the picture profile used.

I remember stopping off in Portree back in 2013 and the bar guy told me bout Fairy Glen and a few other spots no one knows about … how Highlands and Skye has exploded tourism wise ...
