This is how I made this fire surround from some old floor joists. I was lucky to get my hands on 3 old floor joists and there was just enough to make this rustic fire surround. It is good quality old wood and I have left all of the nail holes and saw marks in it but sanded and lacquered it to a smooth finish.

I'm about to go make a start on insulting my own van this weekend - can I ask where you sourced your thinner shredded bottle insulation from for the ceiling? Is not the common approach to install the insulation first, then run wiring in surface-mounted conduits? That way you have easy access for maintenance or upgrades.

    • @Jos-scifiwriter
      @Jos-scifiwriter 12 дней назад

      Depends on the application but this is a vehicle so hiding most of the cable would be preferred by most, especially in a vehicle, it solves a lot of problems you don't encounter with a sticks and bricks build, mainly that the entire structure moves unlike conventional builds

    • @dave-watson
      @dave-watson 11 дней назад

      Yes it can be done either way.....but all of the wire in the walls have no joins and should be good for many many years. Thanks.

    Excellent work , only 1 thing I would have done differently. The plastic Solar inlet you sika flexed into a rain channel . I would have put it in the upper u section and not the lower water channel. Now water can’t run down the channel . Will puddle

    • @dave-watson
      @dave-watson 17 дней назад

      Thanks a lot....yes that's a point but the inlet was too wide to sit on the ridges.....I suppose it could have been partly built up to support it.

    Just a quick question I like the idea of the vapour barrier but I was wondering if you stick the carpet to the bare metal does it get wet?im attempting my first build,any information you have learned from your many builds would be much appreciated

    • @dave-watson
      @dave-watson 17 дней назад

      Hi, I usually stick the carpet onto the mare metal and it works out okay. I would stuff the ribs of the van with insulation first and then cover any holes in them with foil tape and that will work as a vapour barrier. Good luck with your build.

    Coming along nice Dave, I always wondered though, with heat rising is it really necessary to have so much insulation on the floor? I know everyone does this but a lot of height is lost. I bet a lot of people will be wondering this also. What about colour scheme on this one? Cheers Dave, gr8 video as usual.

    • @dave-watson
      @dave-watson 18 дней назад

      Hi Chris.....A lot of cold comes up through the floor at night and I think it's always best to insulate the floor.......you could use a closed cell foam which is only 10mm thick. I think I'll do the framework of the cabinets a mid grey colour and the cabinet doors a very deep purple....I think that will be a good contrast.

    Very nice design. If I was making it, perhaps I would go for plywood bed bases rather screwed and glued slats as it would be much more durable, especially if a heavy person sat on an overhanging corner joint? Very nice clip and design. Thank you for sharing your idea with us.

    Hi, Dave . I'm very new to all this, and your videos have been such a source of knowledge and reassurance. You did mention regarding the bonded windows a U or a J channel. I was wondering if you could explain what they actually are, and maybe why you didn't use them in the end . Thank you so much for all you have shown us. I always look forward to your next one!

    • @dave-watson
      @dave-watson 24 дня назад

      Hi, The U and J channel is the rubber strip that goes over the cut edge....It looks a bit like a door seal and pushes on to cover the edge of the panel. It's about 1cm deep on either side but as these windows have very little space for the bonding material I left it off and I'll build right u to the cutting line inside the van with the window surround. Hope all of that makes sense. Thanks.

    • @dave-watson
      @dave-watson 25 дней назад

      Hi the U channel is the rubber trim that usually goes around the cut in the van....It's a bit like the door seal. And the J channel is the same but one side of it is shorter than the other. Hope that makes sense Thanks a lot.
