Marble tile and toilet renovation - DIY Bathroom Remodel (and belt sander races) #diy
After spending a couple of years on our 1980 Gulfstar 50, we decided it was time to establish a new home port. We fell in love with a historic colonial revival house in North Carolina. After a long purchase process, we dove right into the renovation - starting with the half bathroom. After several weeks of demolition, we finally started rebuilding and renovating our half bath. Last week, we installed a new chair rail, bead board, and wallpaper. This week, we lay a new marble tile floor and install a new toilet.

This hurricane season, we found a beautiful 100-year-old Colonial Revival house. The house called to us, and we had to have it. After working through a difficult closing, the deal was done, and we became proud owners of...

Hi all, we are back in New Bern and settling into dock life. It's getting hot and the air conditioners are a vital piece of equipment, but our units are throwing the dreaded E4 error code. So, how do you solve that problem? Well, by flushing the systems. Here's how we flushed our systems and hopefully it will work for you too. Much love, Kirstin & Andy

Our time in the Bahamas was never unlimited. We always knew that we would need to return to the USA for boat work and further preparation to keep this journey going for years to come. So, day after day we wake up and check the weather to see if we can safely get back home. Today, it appears a window is opening up. Much love, Kirstin & Andy #cruising #bahamas #boatlife

Thank you! The sander races were incredible, good fun.
Your still having fun. Good. It great fun to watch you guys achieve your goals. Are going back to Midwest to see family for Christmas or staying in NB? Steve Schroeder
Thanks! We are seeing family for Christmas
The trouble with these "DIY" videos is that clueless people teach others to do they jobs wrong making everything much more difficult and of low quality. I have been a finish carpenter for 25 years and I don't own a protractor because you don't need one. Further, NO corner EVER in ANJY house, old or new, is 90 degrees.
Hello! We have never claimed that these are "how-to" videos. We don't hold ourselves out to be experts.
That woman is a hero.

New Bern!!!
It's a great place!
@@AndyandKirstin Used to live near there in Havelock and Atlantic Beach.
I like the wall paper
Thank you!
Darn motion stabilizer 😂
Greedy thumbnail😂🤣😭
Too many people think that their home renovations are interesting.
Nice job on the thumbnail cleavage.
Non-professionals can achieve as good or better results than people who do it every day for years, but it's not easy. In this case, it looks a bit DIY. You didn't even try to level your chair rail (at least not on video). You made no attempt to find studs to fasten to and instead used 18ga brad nails (typically used to hold things together while the glue dries) into the plaster. You color blocked rather than going for harmony with the paper. Your window trim doesn't relate to your chair rail/wainscot cap--they should tie together. You brought the chair rail to a stop at the door trim without a return--these are what make it seem DIY.
There's some great advice there and some we strongly disagree with. We did level the chair rail, but this isn't really a how-to video so some things don't make the edit. I also disagree on the 18 ga. For trim that is non load bearing, 18 ga is sufficient and within industry standard. We also disagree with the color blocking. This is very subjective and as we all know fashion goes in and out. We could show lists and lists and lists of projects that have gone with similar colors from professional designers. The return on the chair rail is a fantastic point and one well taken!
You might consider learning to cope the trim angles rather than miter them in a house with odd angles. It’ll save time and give you much a nicer fit.
We for sure needed to learn to cope for these rails! We have since picked up that skill. :)
For such a small room they are very dark colours, nice job though.
We are definitely going for a moody feel.
Hahah. You've got to love construction tool names! The name of the tool depends on where you are and who your talking to... ie router bit, spade bit, paddle bit, boring bit... same tool!
Haha, very true. And in our house they often get called by their color, "bring me that orange thingy..." 😂
Thank you for the rekindled memories! As a kid (like age 10-20), we would often jump into the water by the tip of the island near the harbor or even just swim over from North Beach and ride the inbound current through the cut with snorkels and masks and ride it around the the sandbar off the old Current Club. So stupidly dangerous and so much fun!
Current cut is fantastic!
I think you found a Xmas Carrol or part of it
get a piece of copper pipe that will fit in your strainer - add bromine tablets and you will see your ac running all year with little or no growth- .)
Enjoyed your progress. Looks like a labor of love. Always an interesting and attractive couple?
Thank you!
I wonder if that door is made out of cypress🤔
We have no idea what the wood is. A local said it looks like heart pine, but we have no real way of knowing right now!
Note on stripping - there may be a place in your area where you can take doors, trim, etc. to be stripped. They would have large vats for dipping the entire wood pieces. Just a thought might be worth checking out.
We will search around!
A couple from Australia have been in New Bern for awhile - "Sailing Zephyr". Interesting note when they got here they decided to buy a car.
Yeah, we're friends with Zephyr and are just across the dock from them!
I can see it's a lot of hard work but your efforts are admirable and interesting! 🏡 I found this video through an ad and went to sub! Cheering you on from London! 🌸
Thank you! Hopefully you come back and check out our next video!
Pumped to see your progress!
Thanks!

Will enjoy watching your progress. I too like going room by room instead of projects and mess all over - though you may have some projects like rewiring that might encompass the whole house. Happy Renovatng !
Thanks!
If there is more wall paper to remove in the house, steaming is a more pleasant option. If there is any chance that this is a forever home for you guys, buy taller toilets that you can "age out" with. There's a reason why there are height extensions for toilets for the elderly or physically disabled. Just buy a toilet once. I would approach the entire refit with a view to the future. Anyone can be in an accident at any age and become dependent on a wheelchair, a cane etc. As this house requires a significant amount of remodeling, future proof it now, by widening doorways and making clearances as large as possible, while you are still young and able. At the least, it will help the resale value and if anything happens to you later, the work was already done when the house was torn apart. My sister and her husband used this approach when they built their new home. Wide hallways, lever handles on doors instead of knobs, taller toilets etc. A lot of decisions were made, purely based on how they would use the home as they got older(or in case they became less mobile through injury).
Thanks for watching! These are wise words. We thought about the steamer route, but the vinegar was cheaper and while there is more wall paper, most of it is already loose.
Would love to know how you care for dog's onboard at potty time?
We have a potty pad on the deck. They were hesitant at first to go on the boat, but with patience they got there eventually. In the beginning, we used actual strips of sod (and replaced them about one a week) to get the dogs comfortable on real grass before transitioning to the pad.
Neat house, watch out fo r the lead paint which it undoubtable has under some of those pealing layers.
Thanks, and absolutely aware that lead paint is probably in the layers.
You look a little bit like Jack Nicholson.” The Shining”

Perfect for an exorcist. 😮🙀🦶🧕🏿lol I’m kidding it’ll be beautiful. Retire wire the light fixtures and keep them.

Hi new subscriber here! Love the sink in the kitchen!
Welcome, we hope you enjoy the reno process with us!
Good buy. You will both be able to handle this easy 👍
Thank you!
You can tell from your tour that they two of you are going to enjoy renovating your land home. Note- the enclosed room iver the screened porch may have. have also been a screened porch and what was called a "sleeping porch" (fans before AC) - the floor could have been slanted for rain water run off. I have a room like that in my farmhouse that is over the front porch that has the sloping floor - it is also now enclosed with windows on 3 sides. The hugh fan in attic is great for circulating air through the house - also a pre AC way to bring cool air into rhe house particularly at night. The Sconce Lights are unique definitely a must keep. The bare bulb ceiling fixtures most likely would have had small shades to fit over each bulb. Or you used fancy decorative bulbs. They were standard fixtures with early lighting. Check around the base some may have had glass covers that you would keep in olace with flat screws. Indeed you are on a path of discovery with your new hime.
Thank you for all of the tips!
Yellow room looks like a perfect nursery!
Lots of options!
Do you have to follow restoration rules? If you do, your choices will be limited as to wall coverings, light fixtures, and windows. It will look stunning but be pricey.
Great question. The local historic commission has a 25 page book of rules. I've read it, and it can basically be summarized as "do whatever you want inside, ask us about stuff outside." Luckily, we are not planning on doing much outside.
Nice attic windows grandparents had those
Thank!
It could be a voice pipe possibly to the servants qrts in the basement or kitchen.
It is a voice pipe!
That is a Beautiful old home with so much character. They don't make them like that anymore. Not sure what the thing on the wall is though.
Thank you! The thing on the wall is an old school intercom between the kitchen and upstairs hallway!
@@AndyandKirstin I had a feeling it was a communication device to the kitchen! Thought maybe a string used to run through it though, like a bell you'd ring. so cool though! You can put some creepy screaming sounds on your phone and put it up to it and scare unsuspecting people who are down there and don't know. 😀
It has so much potential. I love the attic. If you can get away with doing dormers, I would seriously look into that. It could become a master suite or an extended family "apartment" or art studio/theatre room.
Thank you! We have big plans for that attic, but we won't get to those plans for a couple years probably.
16 minutes of nonsense and nothing to see
Thanks for watching . I hope you have a lovely day.

Welcome to New Bern! We have lived here almost two years and love it. Cool neighborhood.

Good luck with the house!
Thank you!
Great idea ! Will be interesting watching your creativity with your land based home and your water/cruising based home. When you were in New Bern before you seemed to have developed various interests there so it makes sense with what you are doing. You are fortunate that you are able to do this. Will enjoy watching your new "home improvement" episodes whether at your land or floating home. I presume you know Sailing Zephyr - aren't they also in New Bern with their boat ? Interesting that they just decided to get a car. Enjoy !
Hi! Yes, we are good friends with Zephyr. They are just a few slips away. We absolutely fell in love with this town and our affinity for it has grown this year. Thank you for watching, hopefully it's entertaining for everyone.
Good luck! We will be following 😉
Thank you!
This is a good idea. If nothing else, covid showed us how completely vulnerable yachties are, when the govt excludes you entering and leaving a country or getting food unless you were jabbed. It's wise to have a home base. Sailing channels are a dime a dozen and people watch a channel because of the people in it. It doesn't particularly matter what you are doing, if the content is interesting.
Thank you! We are thrilled to have a little bit of a home base in case something crazy like that happens again.
