    Be careful with the Cardinal Climber ( also known as Cypress Vine ) They're a part of the Morning Glory family and grow fast and make seeds very quickly and easily. If you dont want it dropping seed and popping up all over the place, deadhead them at the end of the day when they start to shrivel up and are getting ready to fall off the plant Just pinch off the entire bud with your fingernail 👌🌹🌹🦋 I dont know if they're native to the Florida region and seeing as you want to incorporate more native species in your garden, just thought that info would help you stay conscious of the plant and in control of how it spreads through your garden. 🦋

      Hi, I’m the viewer in question. Depending on where you live they’ll eclose or overwinter after they pupate. But as far as the caterpillars go, it’s similar to raising butterfly caterpillars. They like to feed off Sweetgum, birch, persimmon, hickory, walnuts, and sumacs, among others. So they’re not picky. They’ll do fine in an enclosure as long as they’re not overcrowded. If they’re overcrowded they could contract diseases and spread them to one another. If you have any specific questions let me know!

    Girl, I am glad to have found you. Someone I can talk to about plant issues that come up. As for butterflies, I have raised multiple species the last 8 years with much success, and also all the heartache that can occur with various sickness issues. I have gotten very good at spotting possibly compromised cats, and how I have learned to deal with it. I usually come in around 100-130 monarchs. However, very sparse-the last couple years they have in general really taken a hit population wise. I am on the outer perimeter of the Monarch highway in the very northwest corner of Arkansas. I have a registered Monarch Waystation. At present, I have had stragglers coming through on their way south. So few that I’m not tagging. Anyway I’m going to stop writing, but as you can tell, I have few people in the area to discuss plant issues. This year thrips tore through ALL my milkweed stands…my handle is woody, but I am actually a 70 yr old childless dog/cat lady. 😂

    I've had so many butterfly species the last few days. Lots of painted ladies and I'd never had more than one and I have had 3-6 hanging out all day. A couple cloudless sulphurs loving on the cardinal vine and have been regulars in the garden instead of flying away like they usually do. A monarch here and there. Checkered skipper, silver spotted skipper, variegated fritillary, gulf fritillary (up to like 6-8). Also silver spotted skipper, cabbage white, clouded sulphur, and little yellow. Lots of grass skippers too. I love just standing outside watching. Well, when you said you took in sulfur caterpillars, you weren’t kidding. Thats a lot. I know you have purple porterweed, but have you considered getting a few red porterweed plants? I’ve noticed lately that the butterflies seem to be loving the red flowers in your garden. Especially the swallowtails! I just thought it might be fun. Also, the atalas do look like gummies. When they eclose, you can tell if they’re a male or female when they fly! Males reflect an iridescent green/teal on their forewings, and the females reflect a little bit of iridescent royal blue. It’s really something! I saw one at the butterfly house in Gainesville when I was there. It was in their little lab thingy and a guy came out and told me about that! It was so fun. Oh and fun fact, Florida has three species of buckeye butterflies! I believe you get two of the three in Central Florida. Thanks again for the video, they were worth the wait for sure!

    • @ButterflyGardeningwithSusan
      @ButterflyGardeningwithSusan 3 дня назад

      What do I need to plant to get both species of buckeyes?? The Atala male/female green blue thing is going to present a challenge. You know how we disagree about the blue and green on the Pipevine swallowtails. I’m wondering if I should put the coontie plants in a big enclosure and try to get more eggs before releasing them. Kathryn at The Nectary told me that once the ones there eclosed, they flew off and she hasn’t seen them again. I don’t want that to happen to me. 🤔

    • @tylermack9248
      @tylermack9248 3 дня назад

      @@ButterflyGardeningwithSusan Okay, so I did some looking and the other buckeye butterfly in Central Florida is called the Mangrove Buckeye. As the name implies it hosts on Black Mangrove. You already have the host plant for the Common Buckeye in your garden. They just need to show up😂 I swear it’s definitely more noticeable on the atalas than the swallowtails. And if you’re concerned about them flying off and not returning, I have a suggestion. You put a few of them in the maypop mansion until a female lays you some eggs, and then after she does you let them fly free. Just until you’re sure they’ve colonized. And I thought we disagreed on the spicebush swallowtails (who are definitely green as males), not the pipevine😂

    • @lepidlover0557
      @lepidlover0557 2 дня назад

      Depending on the variety, your milkweed is likely just focusing most of its energy into its roots and is storing enough to mature into a full grown healthy plant as it goes dormant over the winter I've had this happen both with Butterflyweed and Swamp Milkweed If your winters aren't too harsh, the milkweed will come back in the spring if you have it in the ground or a decently sized pot. When it comes back from the roots, the foliage should start to look like the fully developed milkweed leaves that you see in vids and pictures. It's actually recommended to start perennials in the fall so they'd have time to get their roots settled in and mature over the winter as the plant becomes dormant.

    So happy you are ok and your garden & babies! I have been gone for 5 days keeping my grandbabies and came home to my first EBS caterpillars on my dill. Since I’ve only had monarch’s caterpillars What can you share about the EBS? I’m so excited. Thanks for another great video. Have a great rest of your week!

      Well, EBS are definitely easier to manage, but they do go on a massive eating spree when they reach their 5th instar, and they do a massive purge right before they wander about to find their perfect pupating space. 🩵🦋🐛🦋🐛

    So sad to see a fallen tree after a storm. As gardeners, we KNOW the tree is still alive so long as the stem/trunk remains intact, just pushed over and all that has to be done is to prop it back up and firm the soil back around the roots But instead, they will be chopped up and made into fire wood or mulch....generations of growth and progress, all lost in one night 😞 I gues chopping is more convenient than propping

      Sometimes people don’t realize there are other options. When I am hiking and I see an old fallen tree, I think about all of the history that tree lived through, and then just like that it’s gone. At least in the woods it gets to decompose and provide shelter and food for a lot of living things. 🌳🌳

    So happy to see that you all are okay! That Storm was no joke! Everything escalated from 0 to 100 really fast! I also believe there were a few tornadoes that touched down Trees were falling left and right and the wind was HOWLING! When it first began, we went out the porch with a flash and you could literally see the water droplets swishing and turning with the air! Mesmerizing but scary! We've been without water and power for 6 days now so had to rely on the car to keep our phones charged and water bought from the store. I feel deep sadness for those who did not make it through because that also could have been me and my family. I couldn't imagine those being my last moments. May they all rest in peace and my condolences to their loved ones 🙏❤️ The storm really took us by surprise because we usually don't get anything as intense as that. Never underestimate mother nature and appreciate the things you have while you still got them because it only takes 1 night to lose them!

      You know, right after the storm, after watching the weather and being on high alert, when it passed by, I just turned off the news to focus on my minimal clean up and release my anxiety. I am now seeing the devastating effects to states north of us. My husband and I went to the Lake Lure/Chimney Rock area for our honeymoon. I recently saw drone footage of that area now and I was floored. The devastation is unreal. I hope your home and your garden came through okay. I hope you get power back soon. Please keep up updated. 🩵🩵🩵

      @@ButterflyGardeningwithSusan We're all okay thankfully. A few trees fell and took the lines down with them and a few plants were blown over such as the Zinnias. Crazy thing is, most of the potted plants were unaffected by all that wind. Funny how a little pot with a flower in it is tougher than a 100+ year old oak or cedar tree 😂😂😂 We just got power back a few hours ago. So refreshing to have air conditioning again 😂

    I love watching you chuck weeds out under the trees! I do the same in my back yard which is officially a freedom lawn now. I say, work smarter, not harder! You were right about my Sleepy Hibiscus. It was flattened so i trimmed it back and propped it up. The next day it bloomed! I am loving the frequent posts! Isn't retirement grand!❤

      See, that’s what happens when I rough edit my videos, you find out all of my secrets, like chucking weeds. 😂😂😂 I am just filming and posting…the weather is a bit cooler now, or at least the humidity is lower, so I can live and film in my garden all day. And yes! Retirement is truly grand. 🩵🩵🩵🦋🦋🦋

    You’re really making us wait for these atalas😂 I had no class today! My one class I had was cancelled because the professor is sick so I’m enjoying my day off. I need to get more cabbage soon because my cabbage whites have finally eaten the three flats I bought in spring. But they have enough til this weekend. If I actually PLANTED them they might even grow back but this system works well and makes it so I can alternate what plants go in the greenhouse. Everyone else has migrated south for the winter or is already overwintering. I don’t like it. How am i supposed to get my caterpillar cuteness if the caterpillars aren’t here to be cute?!

      Move to Florida! My videos are backlogged, I guess I’ve been filming too much. 😂😂. The Atala video is next. It should post Thursday morning.

      @@ButterflyGardeningwithSusan There is no such thing as filming too much! Because then should you get sick or distracted, then you have wiggle room to take a filming break since you have videos recorded in advance. And don’t worry, I will definitely be moving to Florida. And when I do, you’re helping me make a garden there since I will simply last 5 minutes in the humidity before calling it a day😂 I can handle the heat but Florida’s humidity is like walking into a wall. When I was there in the summers, I took in so many sulfur caterpillars, and not many hatched. It was quite unfortunate. They’re so prone to just dying. I think you need more sulfur caterpillars is basically what I’m getting at😂 Oh and remember the AI caterpillar? I just remembered that and now I’m laughing. We need to make him an unofficial mascot. Maybe put him on the red trash cans so he can tell us to tap the like button😂
