How I Do - DAW Session Template Ideas | My Custom Templates
Просмотров 99Месяц назад
Picking up where I left off with the creation of a full Template from scratch, this video will now demonstrate the other "custom templates" I use to make my creative kick-off a bit easier. GONE! Are the days of losing 100s of ideas to failing hardware or complex startup routines. Fire up the DAW, load a template that's pre-configured with the things you use the most, and hit record. Done. Beautiful Noise - Season 4: Practice Run (feat. Benjolin V2)
Просмотров 207Месяц назад
I loaded up the old Behringer GO case with all of the modules I plan to discuss in Season 4 of My Modular Journey, in an effort to sit down over the next few weeks an learn what each module does so I can attempt to speak intelligently about them (emphasis on: attempt). As usual, pure chaos ensues, so I tap that Record button and I decided to use this as a Season 4 "trailer" of sorts - so here's...

These concepts can be applied to any modern DAW. Using Avid Pro Tools now for 15 years, and working with computer-based Digital Audio Workstations (DAW) for over 30 years, one of the required things for me is building Templates; that is, to get up and running in as little time as possible, especially when creativity comes a-knockin'. 7:22 Where does the 48V come from? I'm currently making my own diy version of this module (money issue xd) since Befaco have their schematics always available. I can tell they use a 555 timer whose only job is to generate a fixed pulse signal. Then the magic happens when that pulse is fed into a charge pump. A charge pump is a kind of ladder with diodes and capacitors (you can see them in line on the side at 1:10). In very short, this pulse charges these capacitors up while the diodes don't allow them to discharge, therefore at the end of the ladder they get the high voltage which is then regulated to make it stable and precise. Charge pumps are good for boosting a given voltage in a stepped fashion (you can only get x2, x3, x4,... of your input voltage). The downside is that you can only draw little current from it, but phantom powered mics use very little current anyways. Hope you find this useful. Great video and channel btw.

    NICE! Gravity really sucks! What I have discovered over time, is that every little bit you add to the rig tends to pull the rig closer to the ground. I just do not know how that works. Must be a magnetic force or something or maybe just a plot by the Chinese by making things so affordable.

    Think of all the Euro racks you have dealt with. It occurred to me after hours rearranging modules again what the "ideal" rack might be. A modular rack that powers multiple 4MS pods. You can shuffle them around at will with no tools.Just a few locking screws.

    I always wondered why people spend so much money on such impressive hardware and all they do with it play some simple random computer beeps. So far i couldn't find any video about modular where they didn't just played some simple beeps my Commodore 64 could have done just as easily 40 years ago. Isn't it possible to play real music on these devices, like you can with regular synths?

    • @VisionsMusicGroup
      @VisionsMusicGroup Месяц назад

      Great question, thank you! First, you have to define "real music"; because one mans bleep is another mans music, truly. But I get what you're saying, I had the same impression at the start as well. The short answer, yes absolute, you can use modular and random events and voltages to create "real music". Check out the Modular Works collection by State Azure, or sessions by SUTURE SOUND, or long form generative streams by Mirko Ruta and dozens of other examples. They are out there, you just have to know what to ask for. "Ambient" (if that's your thing) "generative" (if you like long form pieces that create themselves) or artists that work entirely with Modular Synths and put albums out on Bandcamp, Spotify, etc. Lots of bleeping and blooping, otherwise... which is not a bad thing :) Even my own Sonic Experiments playlist here is more than just bloops, but again, it's matter of taste.

    • @VisionsMusicGroup
      @VisionsMusicGroup 2 месяца назад

      Thank you! For the single channels w/Subs, I do that because I have 4 modular cases; each one will need a stereo IN, so this quickie template is just 1 of 4 I *may* decide I need. Same with the piano mics. I start with the 2 sound board mics, but might want to add more so I want a sub-mix of those too. If the channel is truly only ever going to be 1 channel, I route it straight to Comp, by-passing the need for a Sub since it will only be 1 channel - if that makes sense.

    Thanks for sharing, but it would have been so much more interesting if you had demonstrated this with the Behringer 182. Problem is that getting reliable results from a quantizer is much more difficult using an analogue sequencer than from an LFO sweep. For example, I had great difficulties with using the Doepfer A-156 dual quantizer to get any decent results with the Behringer 182, simply because it regularly, randomly sharpens or flattens the note, which makes it rather useless for the purpose. my Q-040 has not arrived yet (I sent the Doepfer back), but the reason I am going to try it is for the fact it has a jumper that allows you to have some control over the noise hysteresis and I am hoping that will make the Q-040 much more reliably produce the same notes all the time. We will hopefully find out soon.

    Have just discovered a module that gives ratcheting , clock division and variable step lengths etc functionality to the System100 182 sequencer. Search for GP-82 (4hp). I ordered the kit version but you can get it fully assembled too.
