The Window Into Tim Heidecker's Soul
An in depth analysis of Tim Heidecker and Gregg Turkington's On Cinema At The Cinema and its many characters. Using the various evolutions of Dekkar's hit song "Empty Bottle", we look at the various eras of the show, highlight their successes and failures, and shed some light on these weird characters. Then, finally, we can get back to the movies.
As a companion for this video essay, I created a 24 part video series called the Tier List Advent Calendar, which was my way of trying to capture the "slow burn" aspect of On Cinema without spoiling On Cinema itself. If you enjoy On Cinema, or if you want to experience the feeling of it, you might like this 24 day story told through the framing d...

Why Does Bluey Still Have The "Kids Show" Label?
Просмотров 1,7 тыс.5 месяцев назад
If you think this video isn't for you, it's for you. Where exactly is the line drawn between a show for kids and a show for adults? How can a show bridge the gap without alienating one side or the other? If Bluey sat side by side next to other adult shows, I bet a much larger percentage of people would be willing to give it a chance. And that’s what I’d like to do today- compare Bluey to classi...

    19:30 later seasons don't reign in the style-- the bit is that there was a sudden influx of funding from the TCHJ Memorial Arts Fund (which he immediately awarded to decker). So s1 and s2 are meant to be literally Tim and his pocket money carrying a camcorder. The second season is that he's burning all the money on weekly flights between LA and Hawaii instead of any sort of production value-- but the budget and the quality does increase. It isn't until they get a ton of funding and a sponsor in universe that they are able to get a competent production team together.

      @tin_sensei 2 дня назад

      Good point. Still, there was definitely some growth. Like Tim’s “half” of Deck of Cards feels higher in production quality than decker 1 and 2. Anyway decker feels mostly dead cause they had to change all the names for that (adult swim owns the decker characters it seems) so I guess it doesn’t matter. Bring back the queen of hearts! We havent seen her since “I fancy a walk in this garden”

    I have a pet theory that Greg is weaponizing his special interest in movies and his anti charismatic personality to torment Tim. He doesn't seem to care nearly as much about movies when Tim and his friends aren't there to annoy about it.

    Easy comeback mechanic: If you're in 12th-10th, you get three whites every time you pick up a white brick, if you're in 9th-7th you get two. Now you've kept the crazy, wacky, seat-of-your-pants thrills of the original, whilst opening it up to fun multiplayer. Is it better to brake on this turn so a CPU overtakes me and puts me into 10th for the next white? Or should I keep momentum in case something goes wrong?

    I think the best example of this is Noita. You learn things and locations through hard won exploration, and doing so enables longer and more complex runs. All of it is up to the players desire to engage. The game is highly re-playable through a combination of rogue like, deck building, and simulation elements.

    Modnation Racers on the PS3 was "kind of" a spiritual successor to Lego racers. Having a character, car and even track creator and power ups that level up (including a warp). None of that "super smash brothers" deal, tho, If you don't count the DLC and the fact that you can create BASICALLY ANYONE if you were good enough with the editor.

    It's nice to say "hey guys, spoilers coming !" but it would have been better to put a list of the games you are about to spoil before talking about it. Outer Wilds is better when you know absolutely nothing about it. You spoil the setting directly in the first sentence.…

    • @tin_sensei
      @tin_sensei 5 дней назад

      I agree with your sentiment, but a person can’t buy a game knowing literally nothing about it unless its a gift or something. I just used the description the devs themselves use on their store page.

    • @oldibubu
      @oldibubu 3 дня назад

      @ I get it. Outer Wilds is the kind of game you need to jump into it without knowing anything. Clearly devs had to say a few words to sell it 😂 Otherwise, just a quick list of the games coming in the next few minutes and that’s it 😉

    On Cinema Live wasn’t a one off. I saw them in Chicago, it was great. The cover of Bohemian Rhapsody on acoustic guitar had me cry laughing. The crescendo into light acoustic guitar, funniest shit ever. Also Axe displaying the pipes was showcasing how the other members were the ones with talent. Tim is just a imposter.

    Ty for making this video king, but... "Really starts kicking off around season 7?" ...And they seem to be effortlessly improvising comedy gold? Bruh.. I'll pass 😅 this is boilerplate heidecker, it rides off his one gag: straight-faced cringe on autopilot, and humiliating oddball foreigners. It's why you _absolutely can_ watch Decker without having ever heard of this show... Tim is always Tim, his schtick has always been one dimensional. It's peak smirky zombiepan (overkill deadpan). I suppose the almost method acting "slow burn" is what won you over(?), but it's exactly why no one uninitiated ever cared about this show. Good video tho 👌

    It's pretty clear Gregg is playing a character from the very start if you're at all familiar with Gregg and his work. I already knew him from being a big Neil Hamburger fan well before On Cinema ever began, and knew he had been in a bunch of punk bands and shit, so it was pretty obvious lol.

    One night I happened to be just like flipping through channels on my old school like box tv And because I didn't have a cable box There was no like show information Or anything like that like. If I wanted to know what was on I would literally have to go look at channel four and look on the guide lol... So anyway, there was a show that I happen to stop on and for the life of me. I could not figure out what it was and then I realized it was on cartoon network. In the clip that I saw it was 2 guys talking about how they were able to transform into animals and Tim I'm guessing was the one that was transforming and instead of just going from himself sitting there to a cat. It was like him sitting there in various stages of the transformation and at one point he was just like totally naked sitting there screaming... I had never laughed so hard. And I was telling myself like this show is amazing whatever it is. I had to try to catch it every time it comes on and then I finally you know was able to see what it was and I've always loved it. Those two guys are freaking hysterical I grew up on upright citizens. Brigade and kids on the hall. So this type of humor has always resonated and. Because my sense of humor is pretty dry In general I seriously felt like I finally had found The show that I felt like was written just for me lol

    Wrecking the song and being surrounded by more talented and dedicated musicians is the joke, he's so close but can't get out of his own way, let alone anyone else's. Sucking the audience into a genuine appreciation of the moment only to derail it, to then have the contrast compound it. That's why he's one of the greats. If you have to ask whether something is intentional or not, well you've got a few layers left to discover. When you surpass the absurdism, crack the bone-dry wit, and suck out the marrow it's pure joy. The amount of effort they must have put in to master music and all the elements of a deluded front-man and his orbiters, just so he could convincingly get it so perfectly inept, honestly it's a little frightening. But greatly appreciated. 👌

    The way Tim is now is due to the blod clots he got in his brain early in the series. Also, if you want there to be any improvement in Tim's musical ability in-universe, you're missing the point of the show, which is that these people are incapable of growing.

    "If you're going to have puzzles the require collaboration, you need to find a way to *signal* that to the player in some way." YEP 1000% agree. The bunny mural is so absolutely frustrating as a person who loves these kinds of games. I went into Animal Well excited to have a bunch of puzzles and secrets to uncover, and the bunny mural felt like a slap in the face. Most people who are in love with puzzles and knowledge-based games want *absolutely zero* help, because the fun of the game is figuring it out. The majority of the rest of the game was really solid and I enjoyed it a lot, but it doesn't reach the heights of being a great game for me almost entirely due to the inclusion of that puzzle.
