Best Camouflage for Deer Hunting: What Works and Why (Explained!)
I have a question for you, im normally a early season elk hunter and go in September, but they stopped over the counter in colorado where i normally go, so this your im going rifle at the end of october in colorado, do you think that the highpoint pnuma gear would be good for cold out west hunting, or would the vintis be better
I think the Vintis would be better. The Highpoint might be too warm for that.
@@theeverydaybowhunter okay, thank you
Anyone have The stratus jacket in elevated 2 pattern size XL want to trade with me for mines in subalpine pattern?
@@mr.gtmsworld2494 I have the subalpine too and am very disappointed in how it looks. I wish I could swap it out too.
Drawing your bow without an arrow knocked is a risky business.
It’s a bad habit. I’ve done it for years and have been lucky. Not smart I know.
Have you ever looked at the Kuiu proximity to compare this too?
No I haven’t. I’ve only tried it on.
Non turkey hunters under estimate turkeys eye sight and waryness.
Can you wear this under a bigger jacket?
@@ZB32 you could. But you would definitely have to size up on the bigger jacket. It’s not something I would do. It would be really restrictive.
Sitka has the best zippers I’ve found. Super quiet.
Great video. How is their UV signature?
I don’t know. I’m going to have to test and get back to you. Reply to this comment so I’ll get a reminder. Thanks.
@ thank you. UV is just another tool in the tool bag and not some magic bullet. I do believe it has its place when doing everything you can to not draw attention to yourself, particularly in low light conditions.
Man thanks so much for the great info. As a beginner, everything is overwhelming and the cost of all the gear to get started hunting adds up!
That’s what I’m here for lol. Thanks.
A bunch of fancy patterns!!! Blaze Orange on wool or cotton like a sweat suite , Walmart used to sell, BUT with limbs and stick camo you will look like a bush and they will come in close. THE BIGEST KEY other hunters will see you as like the sun this is safety for you not to get shot by others. Put a little grape Kool-Aid Jell-O or drink powder on your boots and around your stand or 50 yards out in 5 different places on the compass. The reason for the sweat suite material is the shine from light is very low to deer. Safety FIRST!!!!!
Haven’t tried any Pnuma gear but the fanatic is by far the best heavy jacket for a bow hunter. It’s gonna be hard to beat.
@@4kiro0331 it is a great jacket. But it’s got some competition here.
I have pnuma base layers merino and the merino gunnison hoodie. Nice products. I also have the rain pants and jacket. Both nice, and not too loud for rain gear. Oh yeah the hat I have a beanie is very versatile bc it’s reversible
Good to know. Thanks.
Thank you for your effort. But it is probably best not to try and pontificate on something. You have no idea what you’re talking about. Your bow is the holder of your energy. The arrow was only the transfer medium. It has nothing to do with a 22 versus a 30-06. One has low energy the other has high energy. And as far as better penetration, they have you go up if you lean an arrow up against the high of an animal even at 800 grains it’s not going fast enough to get as much penetration. It’s only a transfer device from a finite amount of energy given to it by the bow. Read up on it before you get on RUclips and try to, convince the rest of the knowledgeable world. Thank you again.
@@blindboyjonny I did more than read up on it. Have a nice day.
Best T-Shirt🥰
Great Video Big Fan Just You🥰
great video🥰
Thanks!
This coat is insanely warm. The only problem with this coat is that the wind proofing in the pockets is like crinkling plastic. Very loud.
I didn't notice anything with the pockets. How is it making sound in the pockets? Are you talking about when you put your hands in? Thanks!
@ it seems like there is something in the outer piece of material in between the layers that is very noisy.
If the realistic camo becomes blurry than how come the digital camo doesn't?
@@gregorysucher6987 The deer doesn’t see that fine detail on the “realistic” camo and it can appear as blurred objects or smudges. Disruption style camouflage (this doesn’t mean digital camo) is focused on breaking up your outline to blend in. It uses the deer’s vision against it by causing visual confusion. This doesn’t mean mimicry camo doesn’t work, it just means that disruption style camouflage works better (depending on the environment you’re hunting in of course) for deer vision.
@@theeverydaybowhunter so if the "mimicry camo" is blurry and smudgy and the "disruption camo" is also blurry and smudgy than what the hell is the difference
@@gregorysucher6987 did you watch the video? The difference is how they appear to the deer. Go to the link in the description and read my blog post about it. There are links to scientific studies about it too. It will give you the details you need to understand.
I appreciate the video and totally agree with the layering system. Question: in cold temps, when hiking into and generating heat going to your stand site, what do you do regarding the mid layer to prevent removing your boots? Specificity: do you skip the mid layer (just a base and non insulated pants going in) and add a heavy bib with hip zippers once at stand without the mid layer, or do you have a mid layer that doesn’t require removing your boots? Thanks.
@@robertbyrd6703 I use a set of zip off 400g merino base layers that can be put on or taken off with your boots on. If I’m doing a really long hike, I’ll use an insulated mid season pant and won’t take bibs at all. I can’t remember ever packing my bibs in. If I wear them, the zippers are usually opened up so I can vent out.
Call me crazy but when out of state (or most times) hunting by myself I keep my lineman loose and still attached for backup in conjunction with my tether as main load
Nothing wrong with that
Westley, what secondary short rope do you recommend? Thanks🦌
This is the one I got off Amazon. I already had a carabiner. amzn.to/4gIzW7Q
I picked up the Pnuma 3L waterproof pant and jacket after Christmas when they were 60% off. Was considering the Sitka dew point set, but even with their sale it was still close to double the price of Pnuma. Haven't put them to the test yet, but seem well made and I watched some other good reviews out there. Hopefully I don't regret not going for the gore-tex!
I’d like to review that too.
Great review, thanks! Would love to see your review on the bibs and comparison to Huntworth & KUIU. Cheers!
@@joshjspice I really like the Fanatic bibs. They are really nice. My Asio bibs are really good too. As for the other comparisons, I am going to do a Huntworth Matterhorn comparison hopefully soon. I have only tried on the KUIU Proximity stuff and will have to try that one out in the future. Thanks!
Huntworth is sending me the Matterhorn jacket and bibs. I should have them by the end of the week.
Thanks for the review - very thoughtful. I bought the Vintis, partially because of your review. I am very impressed with my first couple of sits in the low 20s. I love the jacket/pants/beanie and Gunnison Merino Wool Hoodie. Did not care for the Vintis gloves, you can't have Velcro (loud) on hunting gloves.
@@davidoneill615 I like the gloves, but didn’t like the Velcro. I really liked the beanie. That being said, the Highpoint beanie is better.
Keep up the comparative reviews! Good info.
Thanks!
Hey thanks for the tips, you had some stuff that I’ve never thought of. If you don’t mind me asking, what state/part of the country and conditions are you hunting in? (Hilly, ag, big woods, etc)
@@mikefromoh2925 I hunt primarily in PA/ Northeast. I hunt a lot in the mountains of north central Pennsylvania.
@ that’s some beautiful country. I’m from Ohio mostly hunt southeast and central areas. I’ve fished the upper Allegheny river near Franklin and definitely want to go back there or to the Juniata River area.
@@mikefromoh2925 I hunt in Ohio from time to time. I hunt near the Juniata River a lot.
Everyone compares these types of garments for the features, their warmth and wind blocking ability, which is great, but what about the other aspects related to hunting. Cleaning blood, guts, mud etc. from them? The real parts of hunting. I have some outerwear garments that leaves, sticks and debris just seem stick to them, and you have to pick them off, some that are extremely difficult to get blood and gut stains out, which is terrible for trying to put hunting gear up for storage.
@@DennisGayness I did talk about stickies. With Berber fleece that is the trade off for warmth. Washing? No problem so far, but no blood to test unfortunately.
Nothing but respect for sitka and pnuma but I'll stick with my Huntworth for half the cost and just as warm and functional.
They do have good stuff.
The Pnuma Highpoint and Vintis were just on sale for 25% off which put them in the same price range as the Huntworth. I reviewed them all and bought the Pnuma Vintic set, I think the jacket was $174 during the sale. You are correct though, Huntworth has a lot of great late season gear.
@ The Vintis is great. It probably sits in the middle between the Huntworth Saskatoon and Matterhorn. I haven’t tested the Matterhorn so that’s an assumption. I think you’ll be happy with it. Plus, it is really comfortable.
Not for average Joe.
This can be done by anyone. The layering concept is there. I’m going to be doing a budget video for this soon. The fleece I used as an example in the video cost $49 for example. A synthetic wicking layer from the same company costs $39.
I’d like to see some reviews on element outdoors clothing. I have looked at it alot and love their sales and prices but I’ve never compared to the expensive stuff. I think element is definitely underrated and would like to see more videos on it and hope it’s something you’d like! Thanks!!
I tested their base layers and wasn’t exceptionally happy with them. I haven’t tried anything else but will put them on my list because they are pretty well priced.
Is the wind block in the pnuma as good as the gore ?
Yes it is. The winds and cold have been bad over the past week here and I was out with it and it does great. I tested their Vintis stuff earlier in the season in 28-32 temps with wind and it did really good too. I’m impressed with their new stuff. I had only tested early season stuff before and wasn’t that impressed, but this has been a very different experience.
Great review, we both have very similar styles for layering. I too wear a light weigjt merino sweater 125g then i move upto either a 250g merino wool or depending on temp 350g merino, i have also put the fanatic hoody over top of my mid weight layer, with possibly the ambient jacket or depending on temp I also use a heated vest for an extra heat boost just to get that chill out. Key point to the vest is make sure it is snug to your body. Then the fanatic jacket over that. You are definitely not getting cold.and you have complete movement for bow hunting. I wear merino wool long underwear under the fanatic bibs and i am fine. One of the key points you.put out there and i fimd is so important, keep your neck and head warm with something like the fanatic beanie and neck gaiter. I can tell.you with this set up i have seen myself sit in temps where people will.give up and go home. Great video
@@stevew3718 thanks again!
I have never used pnuma, but i have used the fanatic and it is by far the best late season gear i have used, especially for bow hunting. The fanatic line was specifically designed for the bow hunter, wether you are a lefty or a righty it is designed for you, it is totally quiet and i love the hand warmer pouch, just put a couple of hand warmers in there and you are golden. Some people dont like the optifade elevated 2 camo, i am fine with it. For the trees i am in it blends in well especially if there is snow on the trees or on the ground. Good review keepnthem coming, very honest.
@@stevew3718 thanks!
How does the huntsworth line compare with these two items on their cold weather gear?
Huntworth has the Matterhorn. It is their extreme cold weather hunting line. I haven’t tested it yet but I will be. I don’t know if it will be this year yet as I’m in the middle of testing some other items, but I am hoping to fit it in. The weather has to stay cold lol.
But worth is only worth it when you can catch them on a sale DO NOT pay MRSP for their gear wait for a sale and grab them up. Their heat boost is great
🤩🤩🤩
A place to stop knot about 18 inches below the rope man to stop me as quickly as possible, not relying entirely on the end of the tether knot 5 feet away!
I been bow hunting for 40 years started out shooting 3D always wanted the most speed to help for any misjudged yardage so you wouldn’t miss the vitals . I been using same set for hunting shooting 70lbs arrow weights around 385 to 400 grains my speed is 315 to 320 with a muzzy Mx 4 100 grain broad head never had any issues with penetration blows through deer and sticks in ground about 6 inches. A lot depends on your broad heat the large cutting diameter mechanical heads don’t penetrate as good as a cut on contact head.
Right on! I changed up years ago to 407 grain for deer and 420 grain for elk and I haven’t seen any reason to change. Micro arrows made penetration even better
Great input btw I just subbed after I’ve been watching for some time my bad.
I appreciate it! Thanks!
I have the fanatic bibs and the jacket to pair. I feel like the wind stopper”” is kinda interesting. What I mean is it works good I think but it’s not proof. I’m wondering in your life experience is it better to have wind stopper or wind proof!? Does the wind stopper help regulate the heat and dissipate it? I don’t understand why they wouldn’t make it wind proof like asio just did, than after that Sitka came out with a wind proof hoodie? I mean what is happening? Please help me understand. Seems like Sitka is really good to me but I’m not sure why it’s not wind proof. I get the layering process but less layers like asio seems more efficient thanks.
The Gore Windstopper is supposed to be 100% windproof and breathable. The fanatic has taped seams too and that should help with the wind and the water intrusion. That being said, not all wind stopping products are created equal. I have not had any issues in my current testing of the fanatic. I was just out today with it in 20 degree weather with 25-30 MPH winds and it worked well. I do believe Asio has a more highly defined and effective layering system. Sitka does not advertise a layering system like a lot of other companies do. Kuiu, for example, has a very detailed layering system for each part of the season for their gear. I hope this answers your questions.
Thin synthetic base, polyurethane layer vest, predator fleece coat is my go to cold weather system.
Finally got to track some Deer in the snow yesterday, I got within about 50 yards of a couple does but too many branches and shrubs in the way. I’m gonna sit for a few hours in the same area and see if they come back today before I freeze lol
Good luck!
@ thanks
You cant put a price on comfort. Out of all the gear its the most important.
Kinseys is down the road from my house… couldn’t believe when he said that….anyway as always great video and keep up the amazing work!
Haha! Thanks. Kinseys is about a 20 minute drive from where we live in York. Dan lives a half mile away from me.
@ that’s awesome …def gonna have to check out that outdoor show never been to it …I’m just starting out only my 3rd year bow hunting….again though very appreciative of the information u give and the knowledge you share!
@ we appreciate it! The outdoor show is at the Farm Show complex in Harrisburg and they fill it up. Lots of great stuff you wouldn’t even think about there.
@ I’m looking forward to February now!
I found this video very helpful. Late season is tough enough and the cold weather adds another element to it. I love merino base layers. One thing I did this season was changing out my base layer shirt just prior to reaching my hunting spot. I wear the bare minimum walking in but my back is sweaty from my pack. I felt this helped but wonder if a second merino layer would help. I sweat standing still and run hot so I’m not sure. I’ll have to try running a thin wicking sock followed by a heavy sock. That might help my feet stay warmer as they sweat a lot walking in. Good content learned some things for sure.
That second merino layer can really make a difference with moisture management. Moving the sweat from your body into the second layer can make all the difference in the world.
Good content! Not to be negative it’s just a lot more work in the cold to do all that dressing and packing. I hope I can get on some deer this late season. Haven’t figured them out yet.
It is a lot of work. That’s why a lot of people skip hunting this time of year. It doesn’t make things easier that’s for sure.
my last sit really showed what I need to work on in terms of staying warm and the weak link was my feet 2-3 hours in my feet were so cold I couldn't even focus on the hunt lmao. definitely gonna double up my socks up and get a better insulated boot.
Whats the purpose of a mid layer? I've never understood that. Like o get the fact that base layer gonna wick the insulation layer keeps you warm outer layer keeps you warm and dry, what's the mid layer for?
The mid layer is responsible for trapping your body heat and creating a buffer of warm air between your base and outer layers. Think of it as the workhorse for warmth-it’s the layer that adapts to your activity level and the weather conditions. That's why I call it "thermal layering."
I don’t know if this answers your question specifically but I, myself don’t like heavy weight jackets and/or pants. I’ve worn the old browning micro fleece gear, it’s great and kept me warm but it weighs a ton. Sure, I only needed 1 heavyweight base layer and the jacket and bibs to stay warm in 20 degrees or colder weather but it was heavy and your flexibility in that gear isn’t all too great. Now I have all Asio gear. For top, I use Asio heavyweight base layer, Midweight fleece base layer over that then the Asio mid weight core warmth vest. Then Midweight Sherpa lined jacket. For neck I use Heavyweight fleece neck gaiter from SA fishing. For bottoms, Asio heavyweight base layers, Midweight fleece base layer then Asio Sherpa lined pants. For socks I use Darn Tough Hunting socks and Muck Fieldblazer Classic Boots (Temperature range from 65 degree down to 0 degrees). That set up is light, flexible and very warm especially since the Midweight core warmth vest, Sherpa lined Jacket and Pants are wind proof. I’ve sat in 23 degree weather with a real feel of 9 degree and the wind 20-25 mph while snowing and have been perfectly warm.
I keep hearing good things about Darn Tough socks but haven't tried them. I decided to test Hollow socks "boot socks" instead. They are alpaca.
@@theeverydaybowhunter I highly recommend trying them. I love them, I have 2 types mid calf socks and knee high socks.
@ thanks!
For me, I find sweatpants and bibs to be the most comfortable and warm
A friend of mine uses insulated sweatpants with his bibs and swears by it. Sounds very warm, but also very sweat producing.
Everything you say makes sense UNTIL you talk about shooting at distance! Ridiculous. You lose momentum much quicker with a lighter projectile…..right? So if you needed momentum at distance, you would NOT want a lighter projectile! Yes it’s easier to account for drop, to some extent. But if you’re trying to penetrate something at distance, you would always want something heavier. Hard to understand how even using data, logic is still missed here by so many people.
You’re taking me out of context. I said lighter to account for drop of the arrow but not to shoot a light arrow. I agree 100% about momentum but there is still a point of loss of effectiveness. There is no arbitrary weight were you suddenly have momentum where you didn’t have it before. So you need to take a measured approach to it, still paying attention to the data points that go with it.
What I’m trying to say is you still need to shoot an arrow that allows you to be the most effective for the hunting application you are doing.
@ in bow hunting, lethality comes from penetration. PERIOD. So if you want to ensure ethical harvesting, penetration is paramount. Hunters with shorter DL and DW must shoot a heavier arrow to achieve the same lethality. Their effective range is limited by speed. A lighter arrow going faster is rarely or never more lethal at distance than a slower heavier one. Yes, every hunter needs to find the middle area for them. Based on their intended target, the terrain they will hunt, and the average to maximum distance they will engage.
@ did you watch my entire video?
@ I’m just pointing out that advising people to switch to a lighter arrow so they can kill at longer distances is highly misleading and that’s what it sounds like you said.
Thanks guys, another great video. Wishing you guys and family a blessed 2025!! Happy New Year!!
