NEW Machado Too Fish Keels: Do They Really Work With Any Board?
Просмотров 6 тыс.Месяц назад
Are the NEW Too Fish keels better than the original? Will they truly work on any board? I recently bought Rob Machado’s NEW keel set and tested them on a variety of boards so you don’t have to. Did they make any difference? Are they worth your cash? And should you ditch version 1 and just go for version 2? Are the New Seaside Fins ACTUALLY Worth It? (Full Review)

I didn’t enjoy the first version of the Machado Seaside quad fins; they were too stiff for my liking. Other people, however, loved their Seaside fins and suggested I try the NEW version. Intrigued, I decided to give them another shot. How does version 2 differ from the original? How do they stack up against traditional quad fin sets? And most importantly, are they truly worth the investment? He...
Kai Lenny or John John Florence: Which are the BETTER quad fins?
Просмотров 12 тыс.3 месяца назад
John John Florence’s big wave quad is pretty similar to Kai Lenny’s R2 Quad set - with the front fin being smaller than the back. JJF says his smaller front fins are for speed and the larger ones are for control. Kai says his front ones are for stability and the back are for maneuverability. If both quad fins used the same concept and are designed by world-class surfers, what makes each unique?...

    If I have a 62 sweet potato...would you put the twins fins in the rear set, as I have noticed twin fins are further back than the front 2 fins of a thruster. The mike February at $119 are probably the ones I am going to buy. Congratulations...your channel is the most comprehensive channel on fins.

    • @blinksurf
      @blinksurf 12 часов назад

      They will only fit in the front boxes and they will probably work there. Mark Richards style twin fins (in a more thruster-shaped outline) had the fins more forward than the Steve Lis Fish style outline. .

      @blinksurf thanks, I have lay-buy the board and saw it Saturday...I could see the rear set are not as deep and the lady showed me the difference. Anyway, I bought the Mikey February's on sale. With a further 1st time purchase discount...I got them for $102 aus. Thanks, if these don't work, I have the Pancho Thruster and I will get the Hobie Keels next.

    Hi there, great videos! I’m 6’1 180 and ride a 5’9” Seaside and love the feel with the AMK. I too was able to exchange the original machado quads which I first tried on head high surf - you can see the issue. Later I bought just the rears on sale to experiment as you will see. I’d like to know if the Kai Lenny R2 quad worked well with the seaside in larger surf like Chest to overhead as it was not specifically mentioned in the videos?? I’m curious to try it while here in Mexico with the Revo and the Seaside. I also ride a 5’8” Revo and have had good experiences with a few fins but just dialed in after two years and trying different fin setups. My favorite is the H4 Large in front and believe it, the original seaside small quad rear in the back. From small to slightly overhead point break waves I have been having a blast so easy to turn, enough speed and hold, worth a try for those out there that may have one (haven’t tried this on the Seaside but I will next week when it gets a bit smaller.) The full H4 Quads also work well with Revo bit more speed and more hold as I used that predominantly in Nicaraguan last summer. Thank you and waiting to hear more specifics about the Kai Lenny fins with smaller boards.

    • @blinksurf

      I think the Kai quads are worth having in the quiver for when you value control over drive. They are really good in all the boards I tried them in. The seaside is so wide they don't have a huge amount of drive compared to keels or standard quads.

    How did the Kai's end up going in the seaside? Mainly interested in the Kai's for the new Slater designs Boss Up, which I will likely get in 6'6 or 6'8 when it comes out in Volcanic, to make the quad a little more twin-like. I also have a Seaside too though so I'm curious! Great review.

    • @blinksurf
      @blinksurf 22 дня назад

      The Kai's work in the Seaside in good waves where control is required but extra drive is not a priority. The Seaside is so wide it likes drive from the fins in smaller waves. The NEW Machado Quads are great in small waves. Regular quads work well in good waves. See this video for more details ruclips.net/video/xWI7FaBKYX8/видео.html

    Could your recommend (in your opinion) what the best quad fins are!? I know it's also dependent on the board, so let's say a Quad set that's versatile enough to suit 3 different type of boards.. e.g seaside, tomo revo & pod mod? I currently only have one quad set, the Rob machado 2nd generation and use them in all my compatible boards.

    • @blinksurf
      @blinksurf Месяц назад

      Hey there, since you have a keel stye setup now, I'd go for a standard quad setup so that you get more top-end range and a more even balance. Something like Futures F4, F6 or F8 neutral template - depending how big you are. If you are.

      @blinksurf with regards to NVS Fins, is there an Australian distributor you use? Also, out of the NVS Peregrine, JL & Bronn's, which would be the most agile for turns... as I mainly surf wave pools (Urbnsurf) and speed is not a priority. I thinking probably the Peregrine's. That being said, I intend to eventually surf on holidays up Tweed heads - Gold Coast and then perhaps speed would factor into fin choice?!

    Pretty sure the fin boxes are more forward on the Jim Banks, which would explain why it gets too loose with some fins. Those hooker fins extend way back

    • @blinksurf
      @blinksurf Месяц назад

      The boxes are 10 3/8 from the tail on my Jim Banks however and I have plenty of other boards with similar box placement that don't slide. Some have channels like my Fiji ( 10 1/2) and SJS Twin Pin (10 5/8 ) and they can both handle uprights. Usually the more forward you go with the box the more uprights are preferable. I'm pretty sure the low stringer and aggressive concaves within vee are contributing to the slide by deflecting plenty of water away from the centre of the board. I love the board and it needs a longer keel base to be happy.

    thanks for a very thorough review. I demo'd the version 2 on the new Too Fish and found them too stiff for my front footed style. Which is rather strange since I loved version 1 on the GoFish. I actually hated the GoFish until I put Robs Keels in them. They didn't work with the K2's and I didn't have any other fins to test. Anyways, it is an interesting point you make regarding more pivot fins on the board with ticker rails, the sjs example. This could explain the Too Fish issue since it is ticker and fishier than the GoFish. The worst part of fin selection is that I think I have it figured out and then a particular board throws it all off. LOL Glad I have kept all my fins, it at least allows me to switch it up and keep learning.

I'm contemplating getting a "Revolution" made, but just wondering if my JBK2.1s will be fine for it, or will I need to get a set of Hookers? Hoping not, given the added expense! Danny the JBK 2.1 will be just fine in The Revolution. I recommend a wide base fin in that board because it sends a lot of water out the side of that tail due to the deep concave vee bottom. Both the Hooker and JBK work well. The Hookers are going to give you a little more turning ability. Both will be fast and hold.

      If the fins are wide apart the Mikeys are great. They are amazing on my 8 2 Diamond tail twin. For anything shorter or with fins closer together the BMT will work well.

    Gun and big wave fins are generally smaller because the heavier weight and larger surface area of the long rail line creates tons of hold which reduces the necessity for large fins. Given Kai's are larger they'll be more versatile than John's. Hence why you might enjoy them more on head high waves on large step-ups and shortboards. Both sets are essentially modified twinzers. If you haven't tried a twinzer, you should, they are fantastic. I have no idea why they aren't more popular but I digress. I can see how this equalized and spread-out twinzer is an awesome idea and might work really well on a gun in giant surf. Getting back to the comparison, the fins from John are probably better than Kai's paddling into XXL+ waves because John's fins are built specifically for that purpose. Kai's fins are probably unnecessarily large in those conditions on a gun. That being said, Kai tow's into massive waves on tiny little boards so a set that can handle both paddle and tow is sensible for him. Ultimately 90% of those buying either set of these fins will rarely if ever ride 10 ft+ guns in XXL+ waves so I think you are correct to recommend Kai's fins to the average rider who want's to try out this twinzer-esh set. I think for those paddling into giant waves who want less unnecessary drag and the ability to pivot easier should try the set from John. I'm in the market for the latter but I'm interested in this twinzer-esh concept for my other quad boards. Would love to know what people think who've tried them in big conditions.

      I agree with everything you said. I loved the Twinzer the first time I rode one and that's why I like this format of larger rears. I just got a set of SOAR Keogh fins to try. They look pretty good as well. Somewhere in between.

    I got the new fins in a smaller sized seaside. I’m 5’10 165lbs, on a 5’6 32.7l board. To be honest I don’t really love the board. It’s hard to get into soft waves, really prefers a wave with a little push, and then once I’m in it the thing just blasts off with so much speed. So for me too fast when it’s shoulder high, too hard for soft waves, I only really liked it for clean small waves w decent shape. So I’ll probably sell mine. No complaints with the fins though, a little tracky but most of that is the board and the speed. I think it’s just not right for me and the waves I’m on. The one thing I will miss is how the seaside glides into waves with an angled takeoff, that always felt so good. Anyway thanks for sharing this review, it’s so helpful to hear other peoples experiences with surf gear. There’s so much out there and precious little good information. Thanks

      Sounds like you should have gone a size larger to use it as a groveler. I had both a 5'6 and 5'7 for a long time and I've got 10lbs on you and my 5'7 was for the tiniest days up to chest, and the 5'6 was for when it was shoulder to two feet overhead. I've since sold the 5'6 and replaced it with a tomo fish for more performance in bigger surf, and I alternate between the 5'7 seaside and both a 5'6 and a 5'7 too fish as my dailys. If you still want performance in small waves the seaside or too fish is the way to go. Don't get a SP. I had one for a bit, but sold it since it was a shitty paddler and even though it's the best iteration of that shape, if doesn't hold a candle to the seaside or too fish in terms of performance in small waves.

    If anyone wants to make a suggestion on buying fins or not, he should at least know how to perform according to the fins’ design. The Seaside/Machado quad is kinda performance fish design , so just show some footage of you doing some maneuver/speed generation on it.
