Making life easier with automation!
Welcome to the channel! My name is Marc and I'm based in the UK.
I've been opening and breaking things from a young age. Thankfully the past few years that love has come back and sometimes I even fix things too!
This channel is about most things with either a battery or plug on it, but in particular Home Automation and devices to make your life either easier, fun or interesting.
I've been using Home Assistant since 2018 and can't believe that it's now even further ahead of the big players such as Google and Amazon. The project and other similar ones such as Hubitat are accelerating the Smart Home revolution and it's great to be a part of it.

BME680 with ESPHome | One sensor, lots of data!
One of those great little gems you happen across once in a blue moon, thanks!
Nice zoom call background.
Great video and very easy to follow. I am looking to disable an MQTT node in NodeRed from within Home Assistant. I can't figure out how to accomplish this.
Please is the camera on onvif?
Yep, it supports ONVIF
Great video - I think you have comprehensively covered all the issues that most of us have come across and had to deal with. An observation on the default timeout periods Zigbee2MQTT v ZHA. There's an odd but significant difference between them. MQTT is 10 minutes (repeaters) and 1,500 minutes (end-devices) whereas ZHA is 120 minutes and 360 minutes respectively. ZHA seems to have a much longer period for routers and a much shorter period for end-devices (which probably doesn't hurt), but, I was wondering if there is a platform specific reason for the respective but quite different timeouts. I expect it is simply a developers choice with no real reason, but, an oddity between the two platforms none-the-less. A further observation regarding signal strength and propagation on some devices. I have a number of identical INNR zigbee plugs. Three work absolutely fine whereas one often has disconnection problems despite being close to other routers. Admittedly, that problem one is also closest to my WiFi router (although channels are spread out), but, this device is as 90 degrees orientation to the others. The plug face is upwards rather than vertically as you would expect when plugged into a wall socket. I suspect the antenna(s) are designed to assume a standard wall-socket configuration. It doesn't seem to choose the most likely repeater connections and the signal strength on hops bares little relationship to distance. I was wondering if you or anyone has experienced similar problems due to device orientation? Finally, anyone have any ideas on how routers actually employ routing choices? Just wondering how devices ensure they don't cause circular routing - something that will increase traffic in networks very quickly - ask me how I know..... I presume they use some kind of hop-count limit on messages to minimise the risk while determining the shortest and best route back to the controller.
Brilliant video, absolutely packed with information and no fluff. Thanks
I just bought this for 5 dollerydoos because ChatGPT told me it's what I need to send it the same message til something breaks, like it does with me sometimes. After I download it, ChatGPT is clueless on how to send it self anything. So I was hoping to see it gets used as text entry directly into a program, regardless I dont fell like I wasted money. At first glance it does a heap of shit, now I realise it can do an absolute fuckton of shit. Good video, Good software albeit interesting learning curve
Very helpful video. Thank you
Currently researching for work and home and this video is truly helpful. Thank You, subbed for sure.
Great video but whats the point of saying press here and the video changes but we can't see what you pressed because it was too fast. Say what you are pressing on please, especially as the layout has changed in later updates.
Comment appreciated! I don't know what but of the video you are on about, but you're probably right. Pacing the videos appropriately is something I'm trying to get better at.
Only one criticism........the number plate should have said 'stone roses' 😀
Haha, very good. Ideally for me it would have said Pink Floyd.
@lets-automate yeah, good shout
Nice video! In regards to the ethernet connector and cord bits hanging about, have you considered using a small juntion box to finagle all the cords into?
Thanks for the comment! I have a little gap between the guttering and the roof that I'm hoping to get the wire through once I install it in its final location. But yeah a junction box is a good idea if the wires do have to be on the outside.
Great video, thank you for making this. I knew nothing about node red before this video, now I can say I have learned enough to start replacing several of my Home Assistant automations -- which are extremely difficult to visualize and understand in a single glance.
it isn't complete , how do i configure the pxe boot server ? i have been moving around for hours to get that the tutorial is not complete
that date time that you cant delete is probably from the camera itself, those can have overlays, which you should hid if using blue iris. I had older QSEE cameras and had to change them all one by one in the web interface.
man you are good, wish I found your channel sooner, I would have bought from your aff, you absolutely deserve it. Do you know if other reolink's work with blue iris?
Thanks for your kind comment! Most wired Reolink cameras can work with Blue Iris these days to be honest. As long as you ensure it supports rtsp you should be good. There will be some more Reolink videos coming.
One thing I suggest people to do is if they do not have smart lightbulbs is to change all switches where possible to Zigbee based ones. This way you do not suddenly change a KEY router socket-switch, because you need it in a different room. the other benefit is that they will never move. and are always powered. I have about 9+ smart switches all functioning as router, and some that are only end-device ones. I rarely see drops [only place I do see drops is in my yard] though I might get 2 sonoff zb-type E flashed with router firmware instead of coordinator firmware to extend the range
Yeah I agree that light switches are a good choice for routers. The challenge in the UK is that a lot of rooms still don't have a neutral wire at the light switch, which is frustrating because "no neutral" versions of the light switches usually can only act as end devices. Wherever I do have a neutral I have made the most of it like you have by having a router light switch.
@lets-automate in those cases, can't you pull a neutral wire? [at least where I live this is possible, even in older homes]
Not really to be honest. For example I live in a new build which has insulation throughout the entire internal walls. In addition, "fire block" pieces of wood at intervals to stop fire spreading. So it would take quite a few holes and involve taking up the carpet and floorboards to get an additional wire through. In addition you can't really just feed a single insulated wire, it would have to probably be a 3 core wire. At which point the back boxes are sometimes already stuffed with wires, particularly for a 2 or 3 gang in a 25mm back box. It's a nightmare really, which also makes it very hard to get ethernet where I want it in the house too. Some old houses in the UK even have the wires plastered into the walls themselves.
That was really interesting, thanks for sharing this wonderful video.
ruclips.net/video/vDcYz3a21TA/видео.html This scenario will not benefit from a slog device. It depends on whether the writes are "asynchronous" or "synchronous". The latter are helped by a suitable slog device. They typically occur with a hypervisors which store the virtual machines' files on the NAS, and with database systems when the files of the database are on the NAS.
Yes, I should have mentioned synchronous versus synchronous. However, in my scenario of having lots of users saving files I would expect most businesses to want to be in synchronous mode to prevent data loss. I personally use synchronous for all my data because if I've got to all of the effort to have backups, snapshots, 2 instances of TrueNAS etc then I might as well reduce the risk of data loss in a power failure scenario too. It's all a risk / performance trade-off really and depends where you sit.
Very good info, better than all the videos i watched before.
I’m a Home Assistant noob and was thinking, wouldn’t it be cool if HA was available via CarPlay. Then I found the app on my car’s screen and set it up from there. The interface didn’t seem completely intuitive, but luckily I found your excellent video. Thank you for posting this!
Holy crap, I pretty much dont understand anything you are saying. What are you trying to do? Every time you say, now you can probably see how this... No I can't se or understand how to use it. I'm here because HA is to complicated or unable to do what I want it to do, and I dont want to work with yaml. The first thing you do is look at stuff that looks like yaml, while saying you can now probably see... No, at least I can't see anything, I'm here for an intro to note red. But you lose me in the first minute. If Note red is so complicated and I need to understand yaml or coding stuff Im out of here bye bye Note red, you scared me away.
Hi. I have a Node-RED playlist including a Beginner's Guide video. This video is to fill in some gaps from that video. Hopefully that one will help. The Home Assistant automation section is much easier than it used to be, so rarely needs YAML and now quite powerful too. Node-RED can become quite complex and overall I would say is more complex than Home Assistant. Although once you understand how nodes link together it should start to make sense. A few years ago I would have said a lot of things are simpler in Node-RED than Home Assistant, but now I would say that most things are easier in HA now.
@lets-automate wise words, thanks for the advise. Do you happen to know if its possible to setup a random off in an automation. I want my christmas lights tu turn of around 23:00 like between 23:00 and 23:50. I have not ben able to find a solution except having to do yaml or blueprints that also look like yaml to me. If you don't know what to do and have a HA UI solution there seams to be quiet a few looking for a way to make this work, but everyone are pointed to yaml edit or additions, and all us noobs dont know how to work that coding stuff. I really appreciate your constructive answer, to a frustrated HA noob. Merry Christmas.
I will be installing a 200 W LED lights outside. Will this support that? Or is 200 W too high for it?
It will support that no problem.
From reading the device manual, there's some trigger missing like holding the button. I found out that HA didn't recognize these triggers at first. You have to hold each button about 3s (till the light goes off) then the HA will recognize it and add the hold trigger of each button automatically. (I use z2mqtt btw)
Yes, you have to hold it for too long for my liking, so I only use single and double press. A hold might be good for enabling a house alarm or something perhaps.
Very nice, I’m going to binge watch your channel tonight Subscribed ❤
Thanks sincerely for this mate this is exactly the intro I was hoping for. Fantastic vid.
Great vid, seems exactly what I need, well, actually need it the other way around, but will assume that's possible, ie control HA from NR. My aim is just to use the HA dashboards, this is the only part of this obfuscated cryptic nightmare in HA that is the draw for me now, nothing I seem to touch in the bowels of HA actual work here, I have had countless hours getting no where, but NR, a masterpiece as I am sure you would agree and can handle all the control of home devices, mainly mqtt here, perfectly well, some struggles now and again but that's to be expected. So, have had NR working as home controller for a few years running faultless with the NR dashboard, while it is good, but they say the HA dashboard is supposed to be king, and with some of the creations I have seen they do look good, so my idea was to to use NR to do all the work and just use the HA as the UI. As you seem to be highly competent in both, I would be honoured with your opinion on my idea and it's possibility with NR and NR Companion, as I have been burned now so much with HA I don't think I can ever warm to it with any confidence whatsoever, but am prepared to just to try and get to grips as best as possible with only the dashboard part. You may remember me you kindly gave some pointers a while ago on some HA discovery issues I had. Kind Rgds, and keep up the good work, PS I am using ESPHome just fine with some custom projects and when I started that some of your vids were responsible for getting me up and running so thks again.
Great information, but you need to add a lot of pauses in your presentation.
You got my undivided attention by "unnecessary overkill homelab" ... Been hoarding deprecated enterprise gear for no good reason...
Great Video ... Could you share the template sensor to show flow in L/Min ? I use MQTT . I sit possible go get the consumption in Liters ? This is missing in MQTT.
Sir, do you have to use home assistant? is there a product available for standalone esp devices, like wled
Thank you Gemini for surfacing this video for me! The media control was just what I was after.
ANY adjustment of the needle ??? NO !! ... Ups ... you totally forgot to mention that ... i.e. that temperature changes digitally - between 100% open, and 0% open (i.e. 100% closed) ... .. Now, that is SHITTY regulation !!! ... and, a HIGH RETURN-WATERTEMPERATURE ... => fines to be paid, in fx. Denmark !!! So - shitty "stupid" TRV's !!!... AND A YET ANOTHER PAID/SPONSORED INFLUENCER-"REVIEw
I want to fix it FAR from a boiling container? .. so how far its sensitivity is?
Let us know if you find a way to create an automation for calibrating the temperature with external sensor. Thanks!
I'm just playing around with intents and got some simple sms messages going through, but no variables are involved (mainly because I can't seem to find anything but the most rudimentary examples of doing so). So basically I have two profiles that point to a task and each task does a seperate number and message. It works like a charm, but I'd rather have only one profile and one task with variables that I could dynamically change. But haven't found an example of this. I don't suppose you've done this and would share that?
Great video series. Will you cover how to create a custom sensor in ESPHome? I have a I2C sensor that is not currently a platform in ESPHome but I do have the arduino C++ library for it. From the ESPHome website I see that I should be able to make this work but they don't give very good examples. It would be ideal to keep my sensor library and code on GitHub and link it into ESPHome when compiling. I just have not been able to find an example of how to do this.
Dont we need to have Home Assistant Cloud to access Home Assistant outside home network?
Home Assistant Cloud is one easy way of doing it, but there is a monthly fee. Other options are with some add-ons such as TailScale, Cloudflare Tunnel, ZeroTier or your own SSL certificate with a reverse proxy such as Nginx. (I haven't but) Quite a few RUclipsr have done videos on some of these.
Thank you verry much 👍 🇳🇱
Thanks for the helpful video. I'm struggling to find a way to adjust my Nest Thermostat from within my car. Home Assistant is appearing on the car's display but none of my Area's are showing despite having 8 or more configured. Would you know how to resolve this please? Or is there a better way to change the temperature perhaps via Actions or Control? Nothing about the thermostat is appearing under Control either.
If I was you I would create an action. And then create an automation in HA. Set the trigger to be a manual event with the ios action. Then you could have a couple of buttons on your actions page to set different temperatures / modes. I don't know about you but I don't really fancy scrolling through the other pages whilst driving. Not sure why your areas aren't showing though. I haven't looked at those tabs for a while. Good luck!
@@lets-automate thanks for the quick reply. Yes I saw on your documentation you had created an action to set temp to 22 so I am now just creating some different temperature actions before testing in the car! Thanks again
Open source?
If you run ESPHome on it, then yes the firmware is open source. Home Assistant which it generally connects to is also Open Source.
I wish they allowed us to create a CarPlay dashboard, having *everything* available is a bit messy
Yeah. I only use Actions in Car Play, which is great for running a script in Home Assistant to do what you like.
Reading is fundamental!!!! for the life of me I couldn't get it into pairing mode, but I wasn't holding the first button down for 10 seconds. Thank you so much.
Glad to help. Yeah 10 seconds is a bit longer than you might expect to enter a pairing mode. I still love this 4 button device.
I want this automation. This would be used when traveling. When it is clicked, it asks for the flight number and sends a message to specific people, the device goes into airplane mode, turns on low battery mode(to save battery) and turns on Do Not Disturb mode. When turning off it does the same thing in reverse order.
Great lesson! Can you manage to send a Whatsapp message using Node-Red?
Man, you are a great teacher! You video helped me a lot. Thanks a lot!
