The Bay Ridge Elevated Railway Project
Просмотров 5212 года назад
The O scale traction modular layout featured here was built specifically as a base for the NYC style elevated structure rescued from the Bay Ridge Model Railroad Club. The club was active, in the same location from 1947 to 2019, when they were evicted. I was a member from 1978 to 1989. The scenes represent Brooklyn, NY in the 1940s to 1950. All the track, streets, sidewalks, overhead trolley wi...

      To be fair, our rule book says track speed in the yard is limited to 5mph. The mainline is limited to 30, but most operators never need to go track speed unless they're making up for lost time.

    2 of the members, Bill George and Bob Kretzschmar owned a machine shop in Bay Ridge and they showed me along with some machining practices , how to make the elevated structure and the jigs they used to make the tracks and structure itself and I borrowed the jigs to make my own track and structure the track is still bundled and awaiting placement on my layout. the original structure was crafted from an engineering plastic named Noryl, it has a shiny slick slightly oily feel and look to it. it was assembled using MEK I think. they made the jigs in the machine shop using a Bridgeport Mill and syringes to apply the MEK. The late Vern Gilman who was a draftsman by trade worked with them to produce it as well as showing me exactly how he produced and created and the techniques used to make his strathmore board R10s

    It's quite unusual to see accurate models of the PCCs that ran in Boston, since (to my knowledge) the Boston trolleys were the only PCC cars fitted with "street side" doors, I believe for use in the trolley subway. I would love to model a PCC train someday, once my modeling skills, and finances, are up to par with what the project would require. These cars look truly stunning, I can only say "wow!" and compliment the make/modeler responsible for them! Love your Boeing car too! There's something curiously attractive about their boxy, 'modern' 1970s design.

    • @leverettrailfan5414
      @leverettrailfan5414 4 года назад

      Very rarely, I see S gauge PCC cars on eBay, but they don't look very nice. I know I saw a site somewhere that sold body kits for trolleys in HO, S, and O, but I can't remember what they called themselves, and can't find their site. I know they had a very nice looking body kit for a snow sweeper. There used to be a small company called Putt Trains, that made a very nice S scale Birney car you could buy for either AC or DC operation, but from what I understand they weren't around long, and the cars are pretty tricky to find currently. It's certainly much easier to find shells for S scale models than it is to find trucks and motors for them, I wonder if you'd have luck modifying an HO scale drive mechanism to S by re-gauging it? I've seen an O scale trolley model that used this strategy to use what appeared to be HO scale diesel locomotive power trucks. The original side frames were removed, and the axles were extended to the proper gauge. Might work for S, but I've never tried it myself!
