1982 New England Billy Graham Crusade
From May 30 to June 6, 1982, Billy Graham conducted an 8-day evangelistic crusade at Boston University's Nickerson Field. Tens of thousands came each night, including 19,000 in driving rain on the crusade's last night. They came to hear Billy Graham deliver a powerful message about God's saving grace through His Son, Jesus Christ. Many thousands of lives were changed.
Scores of churches in the greater Boston area provided volunteers to support the immense effort involved in preparing for and putting on a Billy Graham crusade. One of the churches taking the lead in these efforts was Grace Chapel in Lexington, MA.
As one of the scores of Grace Chapel volunteers, I participated in the Billy ...

I guess since the bridge is shot away, it's not functional anymore, but seriously, you had to board it to sink it.....a 2,400 bomb incapacitated it...well, isn't that the size of an Iowa class 16 in bullet? And how would it be if this ship was shooting back at you? Not a very good showing

USS Buchanan did not want to be sunk. I think this ship is the 2nd Bismarck. Like Buchanan, Bismarck sank by opening the ship's valves by its crew, who did not sink despite so many hits. Based on today's technology, I think Buchanan is also a legend. I hope he is happy in his new place in the bosom of the ocean. I believe that he lives on his ships. I'm one of those who think so. It's a great video.

Hi Bruce. I was an OS who worked in CIC on the USS King, a DDG of the same class as the Mahan, which appears early in your video. It sounds like you had a well-rounded experience and got to watch a lot of important evolutions. You must be very proud of your dad as it is a great honor to get command of a combat vessel. Happy that you have these cherished memories.

I served with the 9th Infantry Division's 2nd Brigade, also known as the Mobile Riverine Force. I arrived on the USS Benewah barracks ship at the end of April, 1968 in time for the May Offensive. Those who say they won the war by defeating the earlier Tet Offensive are wrong. By the end of May I was one of 12 survivors in a platoon which would normally have 25 to 30 soldiers and I was sure I would die before my tour of duty was up. We had some firefights and losses from booby traps after moving from the ships to 9th Division HQ in Dog Tam but were back up to 25 or so heavily armed teenagers by August. Then the Phase III Offensive hit us. On 8/18/1968 my battalion (4/47th) hit a river ambush of NVA and VC soldiers with heavy weapons on the Hai Muoi Tam canal. They wanted to sink an ATC (armored troop carrier, like the ones which landed troops on D-Day in WWII). They focused on the boat I was on. They didn't sink it but everyone on board was either killed or wounded. I was lightly wounded and preferred being patched up instead of being taken to a MASH unit. That was not heroism, I had seen a dustoff (medevac) chopper shot down and liked my chances finishing up the operation on the ground. I was one of 4 soldiers left in my platoon that day and we were attached to another platoon for the rest of that operation. My platoon ceased to exist that day. I was lucky and was pulled out of the field when my platoon leader got out of the hospital, which saved my life. To this day I have mixed feelings about all of it but I can't change the past. I was drafted but showed up in the tradition of the citizen soldier. And, by the way, the US Army didn't ask me to bring my Winchester .22 cal rifle...so what does that say about the 2nd amendment?

When they do these types of training, the ships have no fuel in them, so they tend to stay afloat a bit longer. also in actual battle, the Buchanan would be fighting back. The fact the Buchanan took such a beating before finally sinking does tell how tough these ships actually were!

That was rather embarrassing. The Buchanan was a gallant old ship, but my gosh, it took all those hits (and a defective torpedo). It finally took hundreds of pounds of C4 to put her under. God help us if we find ourselves in an actual major sea battle.

The failure of so many weapons systems is quite disturbing. The Hellfire is a smaller missile, designed for taking out Russian tanks, but the Harpoons seem to bounce off! and then the torpedo misfires? Good thing the US Navy has these live fire exercises, to see what really works. (Yo, Navy! Landing the EOD guys to sink enemy ships is not a good battle plan.)

Sort of an exercise of wasting taxpayers money as there was little to learn from this particular "experiment." Those who are in charge of military spending have not a clue as to the value of the almighty buck and enough is NEVER enough. As I have grown old and cranky, money seems to being spent like children going nutz in a candy store. It would have been wiser to send the old girl to the scrapyard and reclaim some of the original investment. Now mind you.. I'm no peace nut but rather a Vietnam veteran where my three year enlistment in the Army saw me to attain E-5 rank in 2 years, 5 months over the time of three assignments. The maturity that I gained in the military nurtured and served me well during my ensuing working career..
