  • This is the introduction of Apollo 11 astronaut Michael Collins at Oakton High School in Vienna, VA on April 29, 1970, giving his first speech to high school students after being sworn in as the Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs under President Richard Nixon. This was 9 months after Colonel Collins' historic Apollo 11 moon landing mission with Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin and less than 2 weeks after the flight of Apollo 13, which exploded on the way to the moon, but returned safely to the earth. In his opening remarks, Colonel Collins makes reference to the Apollo 13 mission.
One of Collins' primary missions in his new role was to help the young people of America better understand the purpose and goals of the United States Government in its involvement in Southeast Asia, specifically Vietnam.
This video is short, covering only the filmed introduction of Michael Collins by the Oakton High School Student Government President, John Massa, and Collins' opening remarks, referring to the help he got from students finding his way to the school and how the Apollo 13 crew could have used that kind of help a couple of weeks earlier.
The full audio of his speech and the students' Q&A with Collins is available separately.
