Welcome to my channel!
I am neither a competitive cyclist nor a compulsive hill-climber. Rather I cycle to enjoy the ride, see the countryside and wildlife, and to visit new places.
My rides vary quite considerably. The majority of my rides are day-rides between 55km (35 miles) and 200km (125 miles) in length with up to 2500m (8000 ft) of ascent. My route might be to visit a particular place, achieve a particular distance or with a particular theme. I hope the shorter rides might appeal to novice cyclists: the longer routes might inspire them whilst being of interest to more seasoned riders.
I aim to upload videos approximately every fortnight.
Hopefully, you will enjoy what I post. Please click the 'Subscribe' and the bell to be notified when a new videos is uploaded.

Paxton House: Early adopter of piped water supply
Paxton House is located on the Scottish/English border to the West of Berwick-on-Tweed. Designed by John and James Adams and built by Patrick Home, it is one of the finest examples of a neo-Palladian Country House. In the video, I give a potted history of the house.
The house was an early adopter of piped water supplies for domestic use. The method of supplying the water to the house changed several times over 4 centuries. I've explained how these have changed and what remains can be seen to understand how these methods were installed and improved upon.
I hope you find the video interesting; maybe sufficient to want to visit Paxton House.

Why I cycle
Просмотров 5211 месяцев назад
Whilst the UK was being battered by Storm Babet with 50 mph winds and heavy rain, I decided to accept the safety advice to remain indoors. This provided time for me to contemplate why I started and continue to cycle. I've tried to explain my reasoning in this vlog and hope that it may prove interesting and/or thought-provoking. Norham - The Forgotten Castle

However, with the Union of the Crowns in 1603, its military requirement vanished and it fell into disrepair t...
Ride to Paxton House & Coldstream

Riding my Holiday Cycle Route

During the 2022/23 Festive Season, I used a series of ride leaflets that I had obtained from Etal Post Office to plan a cycling route for my July holiday in Lowick. Although the majority of the route was on roads that I had ridden before, there was a section alongside the River Till that was completely new to me. Come along with me t...
Short Ride to Holy Island

On holiday in Lowick, Northumberland, in early July 2023 with a weather forecast of thunderstorms in the afternoon, I decided to take a short morning ride across the causeway to Holy Island. Goal Setting for 2023

Have you decided on a cycling goal for 2023? I had a multitude of goals for 2022 but many of these were not achieved. Why? There were many reasons and looking back I can see that my plans were too grandiose. As a result, I have decided to be a bit more realistic this year. In this vlog I discuss how I, and you, can be smarter at setting goals such that they are more likely to be achieved. Howev...
Pre-Ride Checks

Is there an A1 Underpass?

Thanks for making this video! Straight to the point and very nice to watch :)
Awesome video we need more of this keep em coming i would say great job specially the history part thanks for sharing cant wait for the next cheers from belgium
Thank you for your gracious comments. I hope to continue to produce this type of video whenever I visit Northumberland. I will look local to home to find other interesting places to feature.
Short but very good x💕
Interesting video Jim, and some informative points raised. I recognise a couple of faces in that group photo you posted😉 Theres numerous reasons why I cycle, and would imagine it’s the same for many people. I think one of the main reasons is just simply the feel good factor you get from riding your bike, after all, isn’t that why, as kids, we loved riding our bikes so much? Then there’s the sense of achievement, setting goals and pushing yourself to achieve those goals, and the adventure, visiting new places, the comradeship, the list really is endless. I enjoyed riding solo, with the occasional group ride, for many years but the last few years I find I’m riding more in a group than solo, which I also enjoy. Thanks for another interesting video and hopefully catch up with you on a group ride sometime soon 👍
Hi Paul, I started off by setting myself goals so that I had to struggle to achieve them. My biggest was to complete a series of Audax rides in a year. This involved 52 x 100km, 12 x 150km, 4 x 200km and 1 x 300km. I managed to do it! Now I just ride for enjoyment as I want time for other interests that I have taken up again.
@@oldagepedaller completing an Audax is something that’s on my radar but that achievement you set yourself is something else! Very impressive 👍
Was enjoyable and informative x
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Very cool, thank you! I hope to visit Scotland someday. Sub number 30! 🥳 Love, from Mississippi.
@@adoxartist1258 Thanks for taking the time to watch the video. The North of Northumberland and the Borders area of Scotland have many castles due to the wars between the two countries. I'm sure you would enjoy visiting them and their histories.
Good to see another video from you, Jim. We’ve certainly had a few days of pesky winds over the last few days, certainly makes it hard work on a bike!
@PaulRose, took a little while to get back into the swing of editing and producing the videos after the computer failure. Will try to produce on a more regular basis.
@@oldagepedaller good to hear, Jim 👍
One of my favourite bridges. Horncliffe is a lovely village. Chainbridge honey farm is well worth a visit. I have commented elsewhere that this bridge and the original Scotswood Bridge over the Tyne were the same design but have been corrected. Any thoughts.
Hi David, Unfortunately I have only seen a drawing of the old Scotswood bridge ie the suspension bridge. However, on the website www.bridgesonthetyne.co.uk/ it states about the Scotswood Bridge (Chain Bridge) "The designer was John Green, although the suspension bridge patent was held by Captain S Brown." Therefore, it is likely that the bridges had similar designs.
Impressive Bridge. Let’s hope the Tess Transporter Bridge is back up and running some time soon.
Hi Paul, yes the bridge is impressive for its beauty and it longevity. I think the Transporter Bridge suffered from neglect over a prolonged period as Council funds were scarce - the result being the slow deterioration of the metalwork such that it actually began to fall apart. I think it will probably land up being minimally restored such that it never works again but is there as a sight-seeing item.
@@oldagepedaller yes, you’re right, Jim. Too many years of neglect.
I think the Swing Bridge in Newcastle is in a similar situation. The swing mechanism is beyond repair. Still usable as a bridge but will never swing again.
Interesting Vlog Jim. I did the crossing last summer don’t remember seeing the Refuse but what a good idea. New subscriber.
Hi @RileysRambles. Thanks for your comment. There has been a refuge on the causeway for several years but the original was a bit dilapidated. It was replaced several years ago by the one shown in the video. Often visitors miss seeing it as they are focused on looking out to sea as they cross - maybe for the view of the island but maybe worrying about the tide coming in unexpectedly. Glad to hear that you enjoyed the video.
Another lovely route, Jim even if some of the roads were a bit rough 😉👍
Hi Paul Rose, I thoroughly enjoyed the ride. Just shows what can happen when you get some short ride leaflets and join sections up. Was great alongside the river. The rough roads weren't too bad for the tourer. Just wanted to make sure people knew they weren't suitable for a road bike.
@@oldagepedaller absolutely, Jim 👍
Another enjoyable video, Jim. Good to see you posting again 👍
Thanks Paul, glad to hear that you enjoyed the vlog. As you could see from titles and ending, I didn't recover everything.
@@oldagepedaller it’s always a pain when things like that happen 😠
Is the chain bridge open yet? I’m heading up to Berwick next week
Hi M H4IIY, according to Chain Bridge Honey Farm, the bridge is due to re-open in mid-April 2023. If you are thinking of using the bridge when you are in Berwick, then I suggest checking with the Honey Farm or the local council both of which will have the latest information available.
@@oldagepedaller thanks for your help
Another very enjoyable video, Jim. That ‘rubber’ bridge is certainly a weird feeling when riding over it! My goal this year (as it was the previous two years) is to complete a 100 mile ride (health issues put paid to my previous attempts) and to join you on one of your SIGFC rides 😉
Hi Paul, glad you enjoyed the vlog. A 100 mile ride is a good goal and should be achievable if you are currently able to cycle close to 50 miles. Just slowly add a few miles each time you go out for a ride. Once you hit 80 miles you will probably be able to step up to the 100 miles in one go. If you don't do much climbing presently, then try to keep on fairly flat terrain. Maybe down Northallerton, Bedale, Scorton way. Unfortunately, you will probably have to do some hills but try to minimise these. Good luck in achieving your goal.
@@oldagepedaller thanks for the tips, Jim 👍
Cheers Jim . Another excellent informative Video.
Hi David, glad to hear that you liked the vlog. It gives you an idea of what crops are in the fields you cycle past. Good that you found it useful.

Hi David, had to do something when the weather was against cycling so Shank's pony was the answer. I thought the sights made for an interesting change from being on the bike.

Thanks David. Hope you found something useful in the video and maybe something extra that you don't currently take on a ride.
Another great video ,jim.
Hi David, just thought it worth pointing out that councils often produce cycling leaflets worth getting your hands on. Durham might still do a set which could be useful for future rides. I'm trying to get hold of a set.
Thanks Jim. Must get that spare hanger.! Merry Christmas.
Hi John, glad there was something in the video that you found useful. A Merry Christmas to you and your family.

Thank you. I'm glad that you have enjoyed the video and that it has been enlightening for you.
Once again, Jim,.Another Great Vid.I hope you dont mind I have posted it onto our cycling page,(Social Cycling Stockton)for other cyclists to view.
Hi David, glad you liked the video. I know Teessaurus Park is quite central but it seems to be overlooked quite a lot. Maybe people might pop into the park on their way from/to Barrage on a longer ride. I certainly found it interesting. I'm happy for you to share it on your cycling page. Maybe some members will take a trip there; maybe with the younger members of their families.
Lovely route and great scenery 👍
Hi @Paul Rose, I've always been impressed by the scenery around the Borders area. It's often neglected by those looking for more rugged terrain. There is beauty in those rolling hills but also a few sharp inclines to be found.
Thanks for posting,Jim.I look forward to your vlogs....exellent.
Thanks David, it's good to know that my small band of viewers enjoy my vlogs.
It’s a lovely place to visit. Been a few years since I was last there.
Hi Paul, I've cycled across to Holy Island a few years ago (before starting my RUclips channel) and enjoyed the ride. On holiday, we drove across but my aim was to showcase the island in the hope that others might be tempted to visit. There are plenty places around where you could park and cycle to the island. A fairly decent ride would be to park at Wooler then cycle up Weet wood and Lyham banks to reach Belford then use the country road to Fenwick before minor roads to reach the road to the island. Maybe return via Lowick and The Devil's Causeway. Just remember to check the tide tables.
@@oldagepedaller thanks for the info, Jim. I’d love to cycle across to the island, that’s for sure.
you uploaded beautiful editing!
Thank you so much!!
Thank you for taking the time to make this video, this was very useful!
Daniel, thank you for taking the time to comment on my video. I really appreciate knowing that I have produced something that others find interesting and informative.
Beautiful scenery and quiet country lanes. Two GPS units?
Hi Paul, I love cycling in Northumberland just for those reasons. Quiet toads mean that you can stop anytime to look around and, occasionally, catch your breath over the fantastic views. I use two GPS units as the top one is an old Edge 800 and runs through the battery very quickly if showing the maps. The lower is an Edge 810 (a replacement) which has better battery life. So I can see my route on the lower one and my stats on the upper.
@@oldagepedaller I like to stop on my rides to take in the scenery/have a sandwich and, probably the main reason, to catch my breath 😉 Good idea regarding the two GPS units 👍
Thanks for posting,Jim.Love your Vlog.
Hi David, glad you enjoyed the Vlog. I hope that it might persuade viewers to think about travelling away from home and trying out something different.
Love that phantom tractor.
It is a brilliant idea. Took a bit of time to get a good shot of it. Might have been easier if it wasn't in front of a metal shutter.
Yep, a plain, dark background would have been ideal.
I certainly do have moments where I just can’t decide where to ride, which is why I keep a saved collection of rides from other riders such as yourself 👍
All part of the fun of cycling. Hope that the vlog gave you another idea for finding routes.
@@oldagepedaller it did, Jim, thanks 👍
Looks like another interesting route that I may have to borrow 😉👍
@Paul Rose, feel free to use any of the tracklogs that I post to inform your own routes. I only hope you will enjoy them as much as I do.
@@oldagepedaller I’m sure I will 👍
A right feast if you know where to look 👍
Hi @Paul Rose. Yes there are many sources of free food around my local routes. It's just a matter of keeping your eyes open and researching which are actually safe. Since mushrooms are notoriously difficult to identify, I steer well clear of them.
Thanks for sharing Jim.Very informative
David, glad you enjoyed the vlog. I hope this might encourage others to follow the route or to go exploring for themselves.
@@oldagepedaller I have saved the route to Komoot .Jim .thanx
@@davidhoneyman4716 hi Dave 🤗 Me too 👍
Good Video,Alllways wandered about which berries were edible..
Hi David, it's worth looking for a book about foraging and see what is available for free. However, mushrooms are particularly difficult to identify so I leave them alone.
Some good advice 👍
Thanks, @Paul Rose. Had a couple of riders feeling the heat on a recent ride so decided to do a bit of reading about the effects of heat. Thought it might be useful for others.
@@oldagepedaller yep, easy to underestimate the effects of heat, especially when cycling.
Cycling around the reservoir is on my ‘to do’ list.
It's a lovely ride but I would park in the upper car park which is on the road from Edmundbyers to Blanchland
@@oldagepedaller 👍
An interesting way to plan a route. I’ll have to get my thinking cap on 👍
Sometimes I like to pay more attention to my surroundings so just take random turns. I knew of the trifoil finials but not most of the others. I have ridden past the golden lions many times without noticing them. With this 'searching for' type ride, I hope families might be inspired to make their rides more fun even around towns e.g. looking for unusual door knockers or street furniture.
It’s what I love about cycling, getting into the countryside, enjoying the sounds of nature and finding a lovely bench on a village green, where I can stop and eat my sandwiches. Bliss.
Hi Paul Rose, it's great just to get out into the fresh air and enjoy the sights and sounds of the countryside. It amazes me how many cyclists I talk to are more interested in their stats so don't see much more than the road in front of them. I love to check out the flora and fauna as I go along. Sometimes just sitting on a bench and experiencing nature is all it takes to reset your mental balance.
@@oldagepedaller absolutely. Head down a*se up isn’t for me 😉
I really don’t enjoy riding in strong winds!
I find the wind a challenge but just use it as a training aid. No need for a big hill if there is a really string wind. Strong winds certainly help with building power.
@@oldagepedaller yep, that’s what I tend to tell myself 😂
I didn’t know about Cozy Coffee closing. That’s a shame. It was a nice little stop.
@Paul Rose, Cozy Coffee has its own Facebook page and Rosie announced the permanent closure on it about a fortnight ago. I'll certainly miss both the cafe and Rosie as I had several routes that took me there. Even if I fancied an easy day, going to Cozy Coffee directly was a good 30 mile route.
Ive been down Maltby Bank a few times and I was there again today, and that sharp right hander does indeed need to be taken cautiously. Gravel and pot holes is a dangerous mix. Love that quote from Barry McCarty, not heard that before.
@Paul Rose, yes Maltby bank is something to be wary off. I know of one rider who didn't give it the respect it is due. The result was that she came off and did major damage to her arm. Still hasn't recovered full mobility and use of it after several years.
Another great route and one I’ll pop in my ‘to ride’ folder 👍
I had no idea which route I was going to take when I left home. I always enjoy the randomness of this sort of ride. As with this ride, continually choosing which way to go seems to take my mind off the distance and hills and creates a surprise when I see how far I have gone. Hope you enjoy the ride when you do it.
@@oldagepedaller 👍
Those clouds looked ominous but it seems you managed to avoid the rain 👍 A belated Happy New Year to you, too. Looking forward to the 2022 rides 👍
There were several times on the ride when I thought I might get soaked but luckily that didn't happen. All the best to you and your family for 2022.
Belated Merry Christmas 👍
And to you and your's, Paul
A great looking plan and it should make for some great videos. Looking forward to viewing them 👍
I hope that I can find some interesting places to visit. I'll need to start planning some routes shortly. Just taking a few days off over the festive season.
Amazing mileage for the winter bike 👍
When I was a ride leader with Sustrans in Stockton, this bike was used on all of their rides. However, I only use this bike in the winter now. In the summer, my rides are shared across my other tourer and my road bike so neither of these accumulate mileage as quickly. Hope your keeping well and had a fantastic Christmas.
Cozy Coffee is a favourite stop of mine 👍
I'm certainly looking forward to Cozy Coffee reopening. Hopefully it will be sometime in early March.
Would dearly love to go there. My family name is Paxton. Quite a lot of history waiting for me there
It's a fantastic place to visit. The grounds are amazing in the summer and, once Vivid is past, the house tours will begin again. Hope you can visit at some time. Maybe you will find a family connection.
