  • During the 12th to 16th Centuries, Norham Castle played an important role in the conflicts between Scotland and England at their border running along the River Tweed. Over the centuries the castle was besieged, captured, retaken, rebuilt, upgraded and expanded on more than one occasion. However, with the Union of the Crowns in 1603, its military requirement vanished and it fell into disrepair then ruin.
Now in the ownership of English Heritage, the castle is free to visit and provides, with some knowledge of its history, an interesting insight into the turbulent nature of this historical period. I can thoroughly recommend a visit to this impressive but, essentially forgotten, castle ruin.
Join me as I describe its location, its history and take a tour of the ruins.
