  • In central Scotland, on the border of the Highlands and Lowlands, it is one of the most well preserved Scottish castles of its time. Constructed around the year 1400 upon the ruins of a previous castle, its history includes stories of Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobites, Mary Queen of Scots, conspiracies, torture, and prison escapes. Join us as we explore Doune Castle. The castle of the uncrowned king.

I used to play there as a child. We, my brother and I would get the key from the gate keepers cottage first and we were always told to close the castles gate behind on to keep the cows out. My late mother was a descendent of the Stewart's. We lived in Falkirk at the time and returned to the U.S.A..

Im always apprehensive when a North American covers my countries history. Typically, place names and people names are pronounced wrong etc, but you did a great job and as a result, a thoroughly brilliant video and a new subscriber! Thanks! Soar Alba!

Really excellent and highly informative account, I often watch similar Scottish videos with a degree of frustration due
to inaccuracy, this is absolutely 100% spot on, so very well done. Doune is an odd castle as it is not one which is spoken about yet has such an intense history. I stay not that far away.

Visited Doune Castle several years ago. It was undergoing minor repair then but it looks like big improvements have been made. Didn't know Mary Queen of Scots had a connection. Very informative. Our guide didn't tell us even half this much. Very interesting!

The thing I love about history, is that people just like you & me. Had to live those lives, for us to be where we are today.
On the video, if you shot it. Is to take a mono/tripod & do still establishing shots in each new location. Hold them for 10/15 seconds, give yourself an edit point. Then do your pan or tilt, zoom ins & outs.
26 years of Television cameraman, taught me a few things 👍🏼👍🏼

I have family in Dunblane about 10 min drive.when I’m home and visiting,I’ll go to Doune castle. Now don’t laugh but I’ll lay down on the ground ,around the outside and I get dreams and intense feelings of deja vu. I had always felt someth8ng around their.I thought I was having a Scottish ancestry rush , but instead my dreams and stuff were as a Roman soldier mercenary. A story in my family was about mercenary in the family deserted the Roman’s and started living local in Ayrshire. Some relations stayed in Scotland and some went to germany. Anyway I’m going home next year can’t wait for another vision. If your in Dunblane, go to the WESTLANDS hotel,it was awesome.

Most modern buildings wouldn't last near as long as these castles do. Half of America will decay and fall apart and this building will still be standing. They built these things with longevity in mind for sure.

Does anyone know why there are Rune marking all over that castle? I was there 9 years ago and the Ing rune was everywhere. I didn’t know what it was and the people working there didn’t know anything about it. Actress Helen Mirren has the same mark as a tattoo on her hand. It’s scratched deep into most sand stone window sills and even in unreachable areas high up in bedrooms.

Interestingly, in the Army Messes we still have a call to dinner. We get a half hour call and then 15 mins. Played by a bugle. Half hour to finish drinks and ladies to the loos and 15 minutes for the men to sort out who they will be escorting into dinner. One never sits next to ones husband.
