  • As a change to cycling in my local area, I decided on a car-assisted circuit of 8 around Derwent Reservoir in Northumberland. After mentioning my intentions to a few friends, I was accompanied by three of them on the ride.
Looking for car parking facilities, I discovered that the Derwent Waterside Park now has parking charges and would have cost £10 per car for the anticipated duration of the ride. The nearby Pow Hill Country Park had free parking so you can probably guess where we parked. However, choosing this option resulted in an unexpected start to the ride.
Our planned cafe stop in Blanchland was busy and expensive so we found an alternative in the village. The scenery was fantastic once the early haze lifted but the highlight of the day was the steep climb early in the second half of the ride.

Cycling around the reservoir is on my ‘to do’ list.

It's a lovely ride but I would park in the upper car park which is on the road from Edmundbyers to Blanchland
