    I'm coming at DBMM from the opposite end. I game with hind bound old codgers who refuse to change their ways. Some of them still prefer WRG 6th edition. My club refuses to be dislodged from DBM (one M) I'm looking forward to some of these new-fangled ideas.

    The combat you performed with the cavalry charging the spears seemed to me somewhat unrealistic. Cavalry charging spears in their front should have some adjustment made to the result to make it more difficult for the cavalry.

    I have the idea of waging massive armies across a table, against my friends, which rule sets best balance; ease of learning and use, adaptability between time periods, best for large armies. Also, if it was just me and friends, there is no reason we have to stick to army lists is there? For example, if l wanted to run Egyptian chariots, Greek hoplites, and Saxon Huscarls, the rules and the "stats" of the soldiers would work well enough, correct? That way, we could build any army look we wanted to follow the "rule of cool." Like, a knight and Roman Legion army with samurai horse archers.

      I am designing a game currently called I Will be King. It will be a little while until it is available but you would be able to do all of that. Its historical in that it's realistic and immersive, but not at all restrictive when it comes to army building. The first iteration will be set it in the 15th century European theatre but the rules can be applied to anything back into antiquity. It also has a campaign system, which sees you use a board game type set up alongside the wargames you play, you build a custom house, and create a few lords and duke it out, storing information on a simple app alongside your army lists to pick up where you left off. You can use any medieval unit in it, even going back into Saxon times. There's a big emphasis around morale, fatigue and manuevering formations in the battles and a good general with fewer men can overcome a larger force almost everytime with the right tactics.

    If your open to suggestions. I don't beleive you said the actual names of either game in the video, only the acronyms. While that's not an issue for people who know what both games are. Given that this video is aimed at people like me, who dont know much about either, i don't actually know the names of either game that you talked about. Other than that the video was very nice and it sounds like DBMM is a game i would like. But i dont know its actual name lol.

    I have DBMM and DBAv3, and used to play a lot of DBM. Now I much prefer DBAv3. The Solid and Fast options for many troops and the double basing for some makes a big difference. The flank support rule for Sp also makes a huge difference. For me, DBMM is too fussy, with some troops getting support in their move, and others deducting in the enemy's move. A superb simulation of ancient battle, but less versatile than DBA. DBA is a much easier sell to new gamers, especially when most seem to come from the 28mm skirmish world, whether Fantasy or Historical. The 12 element army does have the virtue of forcing difficult choices on the general, as opposed to using filler to try to build up morale equivalence. Building up all options is much easier than for DBMM, and allows someone like me to indulge in armies that I would probably never buy if I was doing full size games - Early Libyans, for example, and other Biblicals. I don't dislike DBMM - far from it - but I'm much more likely to get a game with DBA, and DBA solo is also a much easier exercise than DBMM.

    I am almost 70 years old and my wargaming with figures not virtual crap goes back to the 1960 s with Donald Feathers tone and Charles Grant and Brigadier Peter Young. Yes it was time consuming and did definitely cost money but was totally rewarding. My metal figure collection self painted and bought consists of over 20000 figures in the Alexandrian , Roman Viking , medieval , English civil war , and Napoleonic period. Of late however l have focused on WW2 all phases , the French Indochina War , Korea and early Vietnam , something l haven't done since early minitanks and Airfix figures. My new endeavour has resulted in about 4500 figures and 400 vehicles all encompassing that period l mentioned . They are all plastic mainly Itileri etc and while my eyes aren't good enough or my hands to paint them anymore l am having the time of my life. I live in a fairly remote area of NB and therefore now game solo unlike when l lived in the greater Toronto area. The rules l now employ are heavily and l mean heavily modified version of Charles Grants Battle rules unlike the much more complicated rules l used over 20 years ago., But make for a much more enjoyable and quicker result. I will mention Tactica they were great and l would revive my ancient armies if l had a real opponent. .l gave up wargaming or more on hold for about 15 years or so when other interests such as sailing , golf and gundogs took precedence but now they are history and the original passion is back. By the way l am in no way rich but comfortable in retirement and the one thing l miss in a downsized house is my previous for 25 years an 18 foot by 7 foot table . Ah well make due regardless of the level you are at and want to attain . Good gaming it's what it's all about

      @barbkuchynski-mc7vv Год назад

      @@awordabout...3061 yes there are many different types of figures. when i started there was the old 54 mil HG Wells style , by the way i have his book on gaming as well. 30 mil 25 mil and of course Airfix 1#87 gauge. the quality of castings has definately improved and you have 15 mil and micro to add into the mix. my friends and i liked gaming battles in historical content , if an oppossing force like the Carthaginians and Romans consisted of 60 or 80 thousand troops then are units were size were based on a 1 to 60 ratio , in other words we each fielded about 1000 to 1400 figures on the table , thats why 18 foot was great , you had op[en flanks not troops occuping end to end and of course allowed outflanking not just frontal assaults. I remember one time in the late 70s when a good friend , still today from grade 9 had assembled a 25 mill roman army of the punic wars and asked me to build an opposing Carthagian army. The olympics were on and much to my wifes dismay l spent 6 or 8 hours after work and more on the weekend and painted and based 450 figures in about 2 weeks. that was the basis of what became over 1200 carthaginians. my friend Dan was also an Alexandrian enthusiast so l built a 1300 Indian army including 25 elephants and 40 odd chariots. Great stuff , if you want to further communicate dont be shy and we can exchange Email addresses or phone numbers if you are so inclined. unfortunately many who l gamed with have left the hobby or have passsed on to that Table in the Sky. Have a good one.

      I'd also recommend Donington or Xyston in 15mm. The latter are pricier but very high quality. Donnington's ancients range is getting old, though still good quality. They have a new line range for medievals and dark ages, which are much better (newer casts etc) and I suspect they'll be replacing much of the ancients range over time.

No one played any ancients so I was left with solo DBA. I did buy DBMM but trying to learn it solo was a non starter. I had thought of playing solo DBM since I know the rules inside out, but was aware that DBMM is a more detailed set. I shall be watching the rest of your videos and hope to try a solo game of DBMM 100 to get me started. Since it will be solo it does not really matter if I miss a lot of the rules.

    Using a brilliant stroke doesn't automatically add a +1 modifier to the General's supporting elements. The General still has to actually destroy an enemy element in contact for it to apply.

    the problem i have with your video is that you are talking about stuf as if your reading from a script. This combined with that there is no visual refrence realy makes the explenation a hard one to follow. Maybe go over to a digital format and visualise things there. or just write some stuff on a word document or what ever in an easy to understand way and present it to us while your talking. My copy of dbmm is coming this saterday and im realy looking forward to learn more about this hoby. Please keep this up!

    • @irhobbies188

      All the videos are scripted so it's definitely intentional. There is so much to get through in these rules explanations/discussions that a free form just notes approach would make the videos way too long!

    • @risingphoenix02
      @risingphoenix02 3 года назад

      @@irhobbies188 the problem i have is that when you explain something it is done verry quickly with no other visual aide. Like it is nice that you show your army but i dont understand if your explanation has something to do with the army and if it doesn't then it just becomes a distraction for the viewer. As for wwhat i mean with that it sounds as if your talking of a script is that it sounds very monotone. like your speaking while still reading the script. As a history teacher i can tell you that that will garenty some people suddenly noticing that they dont even remember the last thing you said as it all blends into one big mush. So basicly what im saying is maybe see if you can liven up a bit how you talk. It makes the video more pleasant to listen to and more easy to follow. you can still have a script just try and talk a bit more up beat? And maybe add some visual aid and refrence it in a way that it is very clear for the viewer what you are showing/doing. otherwise it will just be another distraction and make the video again more unclear. Im saying this becouse if you want people to watch who are just getting started or are completly new to the hobby. then you want the videos to be as clear as possible.

  • @wmyst1797

    The "brilliant stroke" combat bonus is +2, not +1, so it is more useful than you thought. It's usually better to use brilliant strokes for PIP-doubling, though. FWIW I think irregular generals are better for beginners, as designing a list for PIP allocation with regulars is a bit of an art.

      That got to me for a while. Psilio is Greek light infantry or in the rules, any light infantry, don’t let it worry you. It may seem all Greek to begin with (sorry 😉) but you will pick it up fairly quickly. The best way is to go to some competitions, these players are real gamers and will advise and answer questions and give help. The Alex/Mac army is the best starter army and this video gives sound advice. This is the second one I’ve listened to, so I’ll hunt for the rest as I’d like at least one army from each book. One problem that put me off as a new comer is the players that have been playing WRG ancients for over 50 years have some figures for every army in the books and some competitions call for fixed variants of armies that require different time spans than you have painted such as late Late Successors fighting Sassanian armies and you have to paint extra figures. OK if you know what they look like but you will need extra research time. Which at the time I didn’t have (and I’d just spent a lot of money doubling the sales area of my shop and doubling the staff so that along with an injury took me out of gaming.) . However don’t get put off, the help is out there. Get on the DBMMlist@io.com or something like that. That is where you will find answers from chariots to Henry VIII army in France. Happy painting
