In this study performed by Tsai et al, cerebral tau burden measured on PET is higher in cerebral amyloid angiopathy than hypertensive small vessel disease. Cerebral amyloid angiopathy-related vascular pathologies, especially cortical superficial siderosis, are potential markers of cerebral tau pathology suggestive of concomitant Alzheimer’s disease. Malaria infection has high mortality due to a deadly brain complication called cerebral malaria. Fain et al. show that specific immune molecules found on the blood vessels supplying the brain are the initiators of this pathology, with different molecules capable of instructing immune cells to initiate disease in distinct ways.
