great description of Power Pop! at the beginning! I had to write it down! I've been getting to a little more appreciation of PP in the past few months from the music that I listen ( guitarpop, C86 and indiepop) and now i really enjoy listening to all these new old songs to my ears! I am more leaning into rediscovering Powerpop vs MOD, who I think have some similar qualities but the latter just makes me more curious on checking out underground bands. Thanks for this video!

Not a bad idea. I'd also considered picking up a cheap cartridge to play beat-up LPs with. The headshell on one of my turntables is interchangeable, so this might be the route I go.

Nice entry Mr. Shelf. I showed a different rooster in my entry. I have a stack of Armatrading which were all cheap as chips, she’s fantastic. Have you ever thought of trying to get into Eel Pie? Look at that, Jack: we both whipped out our cocks for the animal question! I don't have that Atomic Rooster LP. I've been holding out for the UK pressing with the denim sleeve, but it's hard to find. Why are Joan's albums so cheap? Bit of a mystery! I should try and blag my way into Eel Pie studios, or at least find out whether they're a going concern still. For quite a number of years, the studio's been called The Boathouse (another name change). Thin Lizzy recorded bits of their Thunder and Lightning LP there. That's a session I'd have loved to sit in on😎

Why are you omitting the godfathers of “Power Pop” from the Sixties, Seventies, Eighties? You should know better! It can’t be happenstance that you’re stuck on ‘79 and ‘99. You seem to be focusing on mostly obscure bands. Why so many references to The (overrated) Beach Boys? Hype is more powerful than the Truth. And, why no solo music artists? I've been touting Storm - "Storm" since it came out to fellow hard rock geeks but I've always stood alone - until you pulling it off your shelves here! Right on, man! And, I agree with you that they needed a producer to reign them in and tighten up the sound - and it leaves the listener with a sense of 'if only they....'. Still, for all its overheated ambition and free ranging, it's a keeper. I'm guessing you've talked about this elsewhere but the self-titled album from late 70s Seattle hard rockers, 1994 is a MUST to talk about...amazing Jack Douglas production and Brad Whitford(Aerosmith) is all over the place laying down a wall of classic Whitford rhythm beds(and their bass player jaw dropping). The lead singer, Karen Lawrence, had/has an amazing range on full display - and this one should been huge b/c is fell right into the Heart world of the late 70s. And, dude! Pulling Ursa Major down from the walls...brilliant. Now, my Moxy mainstay will always be the 3rd one, "Ridin' High", just 80% strong, hard rocking material - and "Wet Suit" from Moxy II is a cranker. Keep it up!

Hey There - RUclips just now served me up your show from 3 years ago - and, first off, really cool to see two bands from my label on your list(Not Lame Recordings) and arguably one more(though, not technically), your #1...Jellyfish "Spilt Milk"(Not Lame released the "Fan Club" 4-CD box set in 2002). Second, your tastes very and truly much align with my own...."Screams" being there? Well, RIGHT ON, man! The first Cheap Trick album being your choice to represent the band? Well, that would be my very hard choice to nudge to the top spot, as well . Grass Show? Yes! Merrymakers? Yes, again. But the cool one to see your life up...Straw. Whoa, nice surprise, that one. Loved that album, too - hard to import at a good cost to the U.S. back then, but my distro arm of Not Lame did. Tough to get folks to drop $30 on something they couldn't hear first(which was the case back in 1999). Lastly, you are a true music loving pantheist with your passions in so many other genres! Very well done, good sir! Gonna be tracking you(in a good way, not a creep one) going forward - keep it all up!

Hi Bruce. So glad you found your way here! At the risk of chucking compliments right back at you, I was a huge fan of your label. I'm long overdue another Power Pop-themed video, and suspect there will probably be a couple of Not Lame releases featured when I get round to it. You're right about my casting my net wide when it comes to my taste in music. I'd love to host one of those channels which focuses on just one genre, but there's too much great music out there to limit myself. Keep watching. Glad to have you on board! ☮️

@@MrShelf-Stacker I would be like you - wanting to focus on many genres, which reflect my own personal tastes. It was funny during the Not Lame Recordings/Pop Geek Heaven years, many assumed I was *only* about power pop with my fandom/knowledge/singular passion and that could not have been further from the reality. (though, power pop certainly was a deep and genuine passion, without question) So glad to hear of your past customer connection and enjoyment of so many releases in the Not Lame family - btw, a 2-LP reissue of "Godspeed the Shazam" will be coming out in 2025. Even though I'm 'out' of the music biz these days, I have been working with Hans and other inner circle supporters on the project for a few years, remastering(for vinyl), mixing, going through live material, demos, art work tweaks - and we're heading to a finish soon!

Fantastic selection and I’m lucky enough to own them all. Trying to pick a top ten is nigh on impossible for me though. There are lots of other bands who fit the mould and some who have elements of prog, pomp, AOR and hard rock who some might argue about what category to put them in. As long as the elements mentioned above are there it doesn’t matter if the music is good. The reply from ssrocker mentions many that are essential too and I recommend everything on his list. Regarding Zon, I always thought their singer sounds like Michael Sadler from Saga. The second Touch album was released in Japan on cd and is excellent but not quite as good as the debut. Their 3rd one from recent years is good but not up to the standard of the others.

    • @MrShelf-Stacker

Arguing about which categories certain artists fit into is all part of the fun, just so long as people remember to play nicely. Thanks for the heads-up on the other Touch releases, and you're right about ssrocker's suggestions: plenty to explore there!

Definite touch of the wolfman about it. Just giving the record a listen while I write this. Really clean pressing. 👍🏻

Looks like a fantastic show. I love that Triangle album. And the first JA is that early folk-rock before they really did psychedelia. Love it!

My German mate is Dub Addiction. Dengue Fever out of California are excellent. Cambodian space project are a charity set up by an aussie guy. Sinn Sisamouth was the King of pre khmer rouge music. As was Ros Sereysothea. Both were killed under the khmer rouge. A few Records/tapes survived. Quality not very good. A yank grabbed them and put out Cambodia Rocks in the 90s.

Sorry it took so long to find you. Instant subscription, mate !! The top 20 power pop list came up on my recommendations this morning and i loved it , lots of stuff to investigate but YES to jellyfish in particular. I shared it with my great friend in London who actually met Roger Manning Jr before a gig. We are both longtime jellyfish obsessives. Another fantastic power pop gem that i bought on import on release is Gregg Alexander Michigan Rain and after the meh of the new radicals he wrote hits for various people ....

Vinted eh? Always thought that was a middle class eBay so you could prove me wrong...... Going out the back in a charity shop chances are if no one prices them up you'll get them dirt cheap that's what we like 😁 I'd have grabbed that Swedish one on the basis of the cover. Out of everything the Cambodia one grabbed me as i don't think I've any music from that part of Asia. I onow there are comps about but often very expensive in normal shops. West London is more populated that here so you've got plenty more scope, i think mostly i see classical and mainstream pop no one wants.

Very cool finds! I’d have grabbed that Papoose LP on the merits of the cover alone. And I’d def have grabbed that Cambodian Psych comp. Can you imagine living under a regime where playing an instrument or being in a band could get you jailed or even killed?! You know if they were willing to risk their freedom or their lives that they were def passionate about their art. Kind of makes you appreciate that record a bit more! That Magic Kids LP looks cool! Love the bright yellow wax! I’d likely have blindly grabbed those Ted album also LoL! Cool pick ups Look forward to seeing what else you’ve recently acquired! Peace ✨✌️👽✨

Like me, you're drawn to records created by guys who look like they're from another planet (or France!). Papoose are going to get a fair bit of spin time here, that's for sure. The terrible human cost aside, I do wonder what amazing music is forever lost because of the Khmer Rouge's tyranny in Cambodia. Heavy stuff: we need a bit of sugary-sweet Magic Kids to lighten the mood. Cheers! ☮️

Yeah, I think I've seen Jonas at Sublimedia talking about him before. It's sometimes hard from an English collector's perspective to gauge how popular unfamiliar artists are in their country of origin. Is this considered one of his best LPs?

@@MrShelf-Stacker Yes, I would say so, songs like "Hog Farm" and "Dinga linga Lena" are among his best known. The album is included in the book "Tusen svenska klassiker" (A Thousend Swedish Classics) described by the authors as being one of the best Swedish rock albums of all time. His releases from the Seventies are the ones I prefer. Ah sorry forgot! He released his debut album in 1969, his stuff is available on YT.
