Plane Tales - The Monarch DC-10
This first episode of Plane Tales takes a look at G-DMCA, the sole DC-10 operated by Monarch Airlines from 1996 until 2001 and has become a gate guardian at Manchester Airport's Runway Viewing Park.
Originally ordered by Egyptair but cancelled before delivery the aircraft was completed as line number 348 in 1980 and following its test flights was stored until July 1984 when Checmco International Leasing acquired it, assigned it the registration N3016Z and placed it with Zambia Airways. It remained with them until 1994 when it was withdrawn and stored in the USA. The British charter airline, Monarch Airlines picked up the aircraft in in the spring of 1996 and registered it G-DMCA and painte...

Thanks for a great video. Little did I know at the time that I would have been one of the last passengers to fly in this iconic plane, Manchester Sanford Manchester. We had done the same flight several times before but on 757’s calling at Bangor Maine to top up the tanks. I felt it was great only due to the fact we completed the route direct, plus it was the first time I had flown on a true wide bodied jet with ten seats abreast. Good luck with your channel, any chance of a video detailing the use of 757’s out of Manchester now that the last one departed a few days ago ( my first was Air 2000 in May 1987 and last was Jet 2 flight a few years ago)

I flew to Crete in this Monarch aircraft, it was probably the most enjoyable and comfortable flights I have ever experienced. The Cabin Crew were also brilliant and the flight very comfortable. I know that the DC10 had experienced problems but by then they had been overcome and as a passenger I thought hat it was a great aircraft.

Firstly great to see you back and what a fantastic video for your return. This particular video has brought back so many memories as I was lucky enough to work for Monarch's handling agent at MAN from 1998 to 2002 as a dispatcher and have many hours dispatching all of Monarch's fleet. CA was always the problem child and you could guarantee it being tech on arrival, especially after a Sanford long haul. The crew were great, I remember the husband and wife pilot and cabin crew team Sandy and Jan. The aircraft was never in the DCS system so it was always a manual loadsheet. When MON leased the MD11 it was managed by a ground rep who had an atrocious stutter when under pressure. When the A300s flew via LGW on a Sunday night to a long haul destination (which i can't recall), they always wanted trim tank fuel, which again was a pain in the backside manual loadsheet. One of the captains on the 757 was a fascinating aircraft spotter and used to collect registrations on his trips. All in all it was a fantastic time and a great introduction to my aviation career. I'd do it again if I could.

Great video! I remember in the 1990`s, going to Manchester Airport to fly to Malaga with Monarch on a A320. We had a lengthy delay as from what I remember was a problem with the rudder and the delay was due to a new part being fitted. We were told that a part was unavailable and Monarch were sending a replacement plane up from Luton to take us to Malaga. This plane was G-DMCA! I will always remember the amount of room we all had, I had a full row of 5 (I think) all to myself and my wife shared the row in front with our young daughter. With the plane only at maybe half capacity, the power on take of was incredible and something I have never experienced since. I`m quite sure that we had a Scottish pilot for the flight, who seemed quite excited about flying us to Malaga.

I flew for Compass and was on the first aircraft as it was delivered into Brisbane. I flew for 6 months out of Melbourne and eventually went home as the wet lease became dry. The planes were from Monarch and sadly we had to “steal” our planes back 6 months later. A fun company to fly with. Monarch pilots and Australian cabin crew. I still have the newsletters and first flight certificate…. Oh and who was behind it… we all knew who was behind their sad demise…Abels and Murdoch, both were being talked about even at the beginning. Post the Australian pilots strike, a year had passed. I have never met a more militant bunch of pilots in my life. And god did they moan and moan. In my later career and I am talking 15 years later, they were still talking about their pilot strike.

Worked for these in ops along with my partner who worked in the accounts team. So many lies and deceits... when people came to visit the offices to 'check in' we had to lie and show them all sorts of technology we didn't have. Lots of fakery and this was back in 2007. We both knew then to get out and luckily had secured jobs in other places but knew so many office based staff who had management come round the day before just asking 'to update their personnel file so making sure we had correct email addresses' - and then had an email sent to them telling them not to come into the offices 😞... sad times

I'm a bit late to the game but used to work for Flyjet as cabin crew and then for my sins changed to XL, working as crew and in the offices within pre-flight and the ops departments. Regarding British operators that previously operated the McDonnel Douglas DC-10. Laker Airways was totally overlooked. Laker Airways was of course the first British airline to fly the type. They had ten examples in their fleet when they went under in February 1982. A mix of DC-10-10s and DC-10-30s. Although it wasn't on the UK register Air Europe briefly leased a single McDonnel Douglas DC-10-30 from World Airways in the late 1980's.

I have literally just found your channel and I am a sucker for reading up on the history behind the planes I catch.. I guess I just love the stories that some of them have! An somewhat interesting find of my own: I have an aviation book which I grew up reading, it showcased widebody aircraft of the 80’s and upcoming ideas of the 90’s, and one of the pages was showing the Ilyushin IL76. Each plane in the book had its own page, with a photographed example of one, and the IL76 photo of the author’s choice was that of none other than ‘UN-76435’, which of course the author had no idea would crash a few years later in the Charkhi Dadri mid-air collision of 1996. I forget when the book was originally published although I know for sure it was before 1996. It was only by chance that I found it too, I was just looking through the pages researching the histories of each aircraft via their registrations if they were visible in the photo’s, and I had no idea that one of the aircraft I would check the history of, would have met such a tragic end. From that day on, I saw aircraft a little differently… two Boeing 767-200ER’s for example could come out of the very same assembly line in the same year, however would go on to have two vastly different lives. Keep up the great work Sir😊

While predominantly maintained at MAN and operating from LGW and MAN, I had the opportunity to work on the Monarch DC-10 at LTN on a few occasions. One of the visits was to replace the No.2 (centre) engine. It’s a long way up! Not a job for the faint hearted doing the disconnections. Alas, all didn’t go well. During lowering of the engine part of the equipment (bootstrap kit) failed, literally leaving the 4 tonne engine mid air. After several enquiries to and from Boeing, then having acquired the McDonnell Douglas Corporation, we slowly and tentatively lowered the engine to the ground. The damaged piece of equipment was eventually replaced, but the engine replacement took 3 days instead of 30 hours! Ah, the memories 😊
