4:36 this means you should desolder all the wires that go into the variable resistor first. I see it should be good to desolder all the connections to the motor drive connector (at the bottom) too
I have a Nikon FE and I am wondering why there is just a vertical seal at the hinge from the door and not on the other side where the door is closed. Is that normal?
Yes, there's only one strip on the door
@yorgic i have straight vertical light leaks at the right/left corner of the images and i am afraid it comes from the left side of the door. Could that bei possible?
Very nice! Thanks a lot!!
is the grease a teflon based one?
yes
Hopefully this isn't a dumb question but do these lens require full disassembly if I only need to clean fungus from the elements?
Hello! Great video, thanks for all the tips. I have one issue tho. When I'm putting the grooves up from the fresnel and the hole on the matte groundglass upwards, I can't adjust the groundglass to reach infinity. It stops way earlier. Is it really suppose to face up? I find if I turn them around I can achieve infinity from the ground glass adjustments. Thanks!
Hello, in the video the focusing screens are installed following the pentax 67 service manual. Is your lens calibrated with the film plane?
@@yorgic I did, but I might have to try and do it again and see if I can find something further away. My matte ground glass doesn’t have any grooves. Should the matte side be up or down?
Seems to be a later version of this Ai-s lens. Only 3 screws holding the mount mine has 5 screws. Earlier version has a completely different internal system.
what screwdrivers do you use? size and metal type? jis?
I use iFixit mako driver kit
@@yorgic thank you!
02:38 how should i do if i cant get it loosen even if i use alcohol and wd40?
You can use little drops of nail polish remover with a q-tip. And use a piece of rubber for good grip.
@@yorgic thanks! i will give it another try!
Just what I needed , i just bought this lens which is otherwise immaculate , my bad is i didnt notice the fungus previous to buying it
Merci beaucoup Yorki 👍👋
Did you hook one end of the spring on the body and second end on the gear? Did you charge the spring before you installed the gear? Many thanks
Yes, first the spring tip falls in the body then the plastic gear grabs the other tip. The spring is charged 1/2 turn.
Thank you 🙏
One more question - after reassembling you used q-tip just to wipe it out
It was some sort of grease or just like isopropyl alcohol ?
@@20018alex The q-tip is for cleaning dust and finger prints. I didn't use alcohol in the video.
On the video this procedure is on 43-55 secons
Hi! Please can you explain for me in more detail, how to install the spring , which is under the gear?
Great video, thanks I have a similar problem of sticky aperture blades on this lens, and now I know I will never be able to fix it myself… I’d make a mess out of a great lens. Thank you anyway, it was impressive.
Very nice!!❤
Thanks for this repair video, very helpful! With the AI version, I've seen another youtuber scratch markings during disassembly, to help get things aligned exactly (the diaphragm position in particular) during reassembly. Is that advisable/necessary with the AIS version as well? I notice a significant difference in designs between the AI and AIS versions.
Marking the pieces is a good practice for precise assembly.
Where you find it. Iam from Russia, and have aliexpress only. I saw shutterblades for canon, its looks like good to replace.but i dont sure
You make one error and this lens has more screws loose than you by attempting to clean a masterpiece
Thanks for your video. The meter needle in my FE2 is not swinging, but is obvious that the meter is working. in the trobleshooting says something about the MD switch, but i cannot find that thing.
The fe2 repair manual can help a lot.
Blows my mind that they desinged this in the 80s. No CAD like there is today.
There was CAD already in the early 70s and you can bet Nikon used it since then.
Hello. my lens has a small spring that links the aperture assmbly to the rear element housing
Short and sweet video- just what I needed. Thanks and yes, I subscribed 😊
I am also wondering what was wrong with the camera beforehand. How did the broken shutter affect the rest of the camera/ I broke mines tonight and it locked the mirror and the advancer, as well as the curtains staying closed.
you can watch the dissassembly video
How do you get the black part to restick
I use silicone glue
Can you tell me what thickness is you needed? It looks like a lot of the kids just come with one thickness. But I saw another kit that came with three different ones: 1 mm, 2 mm and 3 mm
2mm

What kind of grease did you use? Did you have to re-calibrate the focus after disassembling?
Plastic gear grease. Yes, the focus needs calibration after disassembling.
Hello!!! Which grease do you use? In the helicoidal
Plastic gear grease
Thank you for posting this. I have had a 28-105 lens stored for years because I upgraded to an 24-105 F4 L. The old lens had fungus inside the front element and it seemed that the only way to get to it is by dismantling. The video was very helpful with this, but putting it back together I notice there is a bit of a jump at 7:12 in the video and having got there myself I realise why - It is much more tricky than it looks. By the time I did get past it and secured it with the screw, I realised that one of the cables had severed from the numerous attempts at getting the body in place and ensuring the pin was seated in the groove. It was certainly worth a try for a lens that wasn't worth paying for a professional repair and I wouldn't really be able to sell for anything worthwhile, because of the fungus problem. In case anyone is wondering how I got on, the front element is fungus free and makes a great magnifying glass. I also have a waste basket full of lens components, but it was fun trying 😄
Flex cables are a curse.
Hi. Is it possible for you to disassemble the USM motor?
Thanks! Very useful.
I was going to attempt to clean the haze off the rear element of my 90/2.8 but after seeing this video, no way. I'll live with some sun glare
Smart decision
voodoo magic
Is it possible to just remove the front of this lens? Like the front glass, as my lens has dust in it
Yes, you can remove the ring that holds the front element
@@yorgic will I need a tool to do so or can I just turn the front bit with a screwdriver
The Nikkor 28mm 3.5 dates from the start of the F system, and has undergone several updates, last in the early 1970s. The original from around 1961 was quite unremarkable, even by the standards of its day. I bought the last optical version (pre-AI) around late 1976 in Japan. It proved to be a remarkably sharp, high contrast optic, yet it sells used for peanuts. One of the true bargains in the Nikkor line. If you shop for one of these late versions, one sure ID is if it is a true AI mount lens, (NIkon provided retrofit AI mount services for most of its lenses around 1977-79, so you have to check whether an AI lens like this 28mm is a real AI or an early version retrofitted.)
Thank you for comment. When I bought this lens it was listed as AI but I knew it was an AI-S because the aperture number "22" is orange in both rows.
@@yorgic ... I didn't see you marking where the helicoid separates... was this not needed for this lens? The helicoid only goes back in one way?
@@kelvinlee8102 I tried multiple positions and left the correct one in the video. Marking saves you time.
太不真是,简直就是在作秀!!!
Which focusing screen is that?
Cnscope on ebay
Thanks man 👌
Хочу его разобрать для Большого формата камеры 🤪
Is it possible to change the "front ring" without open all the lens? The one where the filters attach. Because mine is a broken in some parts
I have a question, all the parts that you are assembly again from 2:20 until 3:40 (the little pin that fix the springy thing, the springy thing itself, the bigger spring that goes over the big tube, the latch that embrace the hole tight) are the same in the Nikon FE and the Nikon FE2? Because i have a FE2 that lost all those parts and I only can find the same parts but from a FE. Thanks so much!
The parts look identical in both repair manuals. photos.app.goo.gl/275c8L55hfvS9pG58
@@yorgic I think so (I looked the exact manuals lol), if I get the pieces from the FE and works (or not) on my FE2 I'll be back here and comment again!
Well, I finally got the pieces from a FE and I can say that they works 100% on a FE2, thank you so mucho for the video, It helps me a lot!
@@ripwotd Glad I could help
The center lens capsule is probably sealed and you can't take it apart to clean it. Somehow they get fungus growing in that sealed area. I think they knew what they were doing. Some old metal lenses use loctite .
I always hope for the fungus to be in the in the outside and not between sealed elements.
Awesome job.
Thanks for sharing this, very helpful. Where can I get an acrylic sheet that size?
It's 2mm acrylic with one side sanded. You have to cut it from a bigger sheet.
Greetings from Brazil. I have the FM2n, the model with the honeycomb shutter, working pretty fine. My doubt is about the proper way to prevent wear or damage on the shutter. If I wont use the camera for a long time, is the best thing to keep shutter charged or avoid it? I aways hear controversial answers and it seems to depends on the camera. What is the best way?
I leave the camera uncocked but I haven't read about the best way.
thanks for sharing, looks like different curtains are used? the way you installed these did not look like the original ones?
The curtains can be made of titanium or aluminum. Both have the same dimensions.
What do you recommend?@@yorgic
When you're adjusting the calibration of the focus screen it's not clear in your demo if you are you using infinity focus to check the alignment or in your video it looks more like the focus is on the roof. What do you use? Infinity or some object closer around 3m ? Most of my work is portrait and hence all around minimum focus and I am regularly back focusing so that the ears and not the ears are in sharp focus! Aggghh SO frustrating so would be super grateful if you can help me nail this. 🙏
Sorry correction: Ears not eyes in focus!
In this video the calibration is always on infinity focus.
Hi ... can't you do ground glass adjustment without first test?
Yes, if you know for sure that the lens is well calibrated.
@@yorgic I sent an email
Hi, Yorgi. Greetings from Havana, Cuba. Im stuck with a FM2 shutter. I’ve done all the steps of you video and still I can’t get the shutter to work. Basically, one of the two curtains is never release. I wonder if I need to service the second level of the speed clockwork mechanism. Do you have some advice that might help me? Thanks in advance
Hello, your shutter was working before? why did you take it apart?
Wonderful. Now I finally know how to re-lubricate my 50mm f1.4 AI lens. Thank you for uploading!
