      Hi Rodrigo, I was thinking the tree will shed part of the foliage which it will not be able to sustain. And the tree did just like that. Some leaves fell of, some stayed and tree balanced itself. Of course, if I would wanted to stay more on safer side I would reduce half ot the branches. Anyway tree is clever, he will find its way to deal with that.

    By the way, about Osmocote: Walter Pall once popularized superfeeding (applying liquid fertilizers every 7-10 days in large quantities). How common is this now among European artists and is this practiced simultaneously with the Osmocote introduction into the substrate? Or is Osmocote a complete replacement for liquid fertilizers?

    • @marosbonsai
      @marosbonsai 16 дней назад

      Hi Yaroslav. For me Osmocote is a main fertiliser because it is universal, fool proof, works well with my watering regime, seems to impossible to overdose plants. Also when life strikes hard and I can't fertilise other way, I know Osmocote is there and with every watering or rain it releases nutrients. As supplemental way of fertilisation Im using chemical fertiliser called Krystalon. I'm using it it with mixing device I just connect to hose, so also easy and convenient. But I'm not using it too often, so like once in 3 weeks. As for other means of fertilisation, I was using extensively chicken granulated manure, purchased from any garden center. I completely abandoned it since Walter once told me it could be source of fungal problems on deciduous trees. Do I have less problems with fungus? Yes. Did it solve fungal problems completely? No. Regarding Walter, I don't know how his fertilising schedule look like currently. I think he is not using organic fertilisers he used to as I said. When there will be opportunity to ask, I will.

    I think you will have a nice radial nebari. Another method seen on acer buergerianum it's cross roots like a fabric cloth. I asked an old man who had flat nebari like a pizza (I don't like it so much, i prefer see few big roots like nature does and not a pizza😂). He told me japanese ppl used to select and "create nodes" or intersect roots tied up (on buergerianum) that will grow and fuse themselves into a flat big nebari.

    • @marosbonsai
      @marosbonsai 20 дней назад

      Thanks. There are many interesting techniques to manipulate the trees so they create desired shapes. I haven't seen the technique you are describing, but I can understand underlying logic of it. I'm not big fan of "pancake" nebari either, it is not according to my taste, but I know many people like it and think it looks cool.

    Bonjour, très intéressant, mais pourquoi il faut boucher les trous ?

    • @marosbonsai
      @marosbonsai 20 дней назад

      In case the drilled hole is not plugged by something, it would heal and close with callus before roots have chance to appear. So we have to create condition for universal young cells under the bark which could create any part of tree (bark, cambium, stems, roots... ) to be exposed to humidity, hormone and air which will encourage those cells to create roots.

    Thank you for the video. I agree that development will take time. The bigger the trunk the longer it will take to get appropriate primary branches. Makes me think ground growing would assist in branch formation but will set back nebari formation. Ground growing on a stone slab may allow both radial root spread while allowing development of correct size primary branches. We grow we cut we see we learn.

    • @marosbonsai

    Zdravím, prosim vas mam otázku ohľadne dubov z prirody. Na vašom blogu som nasiel stary príspevok (tusim 10+ rokov?), ze duby zvládnu aj neskoršie vykopanie (maj, jun a dokonca aj júl..). Aky máte na to aktuálne nazor? Je to ok alebo radšej odporúčate klasické kopanie na začiatku jari? Ak ste sa k tomu niekde vyjadroval ospravedlňujem sa. Ďakujem za odpoved✌️

    • @marosbonsai
      @marosbonsai Месяц назад

      Ahoj Tomáš. Dobrá otázka. Fakt je, že ja som žiadny dub dlho nekopal. Takže nemam s tým aktuálnu skúsenosť. Ale myslím si, že sa v komunite yamadori nadšencov na to nejako pohľad radikálne nezmenil. Ak by som mal ja kopať dub, tak by som ho šiel kopať v takom termíne, že by mal veľké puky a takmer listy. Časovo to je ťažko zaradiť lebo počasie je každú jar rôzne. Druhá vec je, môj názor je že časové okno na kopanie stromov je oveľa väčšie ako si mnoho začínajúcich bonsajistov uvedomuje. Veľa ľudí (aj profesinálov) kopú takmer celý rok, skoro celú zimu keď nemrzne, v neskorm lete a začiatkom jesene, potom celú jeseň až do Vianoc.... samozrejme je to otázka starostlivosti po vykopaní, ako viem strom chrániť pred vetrom, pred nízkymi teplotami a pod. Neviem či taká odpoveď postačuje. Ak, tak sa pýtaj. M.

    I really enjoy your Q&A format Maros. I find that the questions truly cross into what I’ve pondered in the very beginnings of my bonsai journey. Very well explained as to the pros and cons, the amount of effort gained or those somewhat compromised. Scalability and factors to assist our plants whether it be in branch or trunk volume and your references to positive and negative space relative to the composition as an art form (to me) speaks a lot of the artist in you Maros - your approach very much parallels just as a sculptor and a painter would.! Many, many thanks for this Maros! Although a work in progress,( isn’t all bonsai?) this, as I said before, has to be the best bonsai representation of a mature elm in nature. A truly majestic tree. So many questions answered here. Totally inspiring stuff! Ian 😎

      Im happy it didn't disappoint you. As you said, work in progress and many years will pass until it will reach the peak. The tree was repotted after long period of time this spring, so it slowed down a bit. Now it went to national exhibition, even if not perfect because it was collected in the hills over the city where exhibition was held. So it was symbolical return to honor the friend who was on collecting trip in 2013 with me, and is not with us anymore. For the purpose of the exhibition all bottom branches had to be shortened to fit the profile. Now it will not go anywhere for many years and new ugly sacrifice branches will be grown again. Greetings.

      I don't know how to add a picture here. There is a link to the FB album with the tree. One picture is from the 2024 exhibition
