    I collected 2 hawthorns so far. One in fall, the other one in spring the following year. Both made it thanks to the black bag!

    Hi Maros, thank you for the video. Could you also do a video on how to grow the tree that is positioned the furthest away from you in the video? I really love it and would like to grow one myself. Thanks!

      Hi Will, There was already a demand for video about it, so I will think about how to do it and what I can tell about it to make sense for the viewers. Greetings

    back in the 80's we used translucent plastic bags... we called it ICU's.
    you need to slowly open the bags so it does not shock the tree, we would remove the ties used and open it a little. if you notice that the new shoots are not wilting you can increse the opening. monitor for any wilting and close it back up, keep monitoring and opening the bag until you see it fit to remove it completely.

      Walter in his article, which is easily 15 years old, refferes to same treatment and talks about use of this method by folks. So Im pretty sure it is nothing new really. On another hand, it si common sense to protect fragile plants in polytunells and/or greenhouses(to keep mosture up, and wind induced problems down) for centuries. So yeah. I like ICU designation

    Thank you for your videos. There are a couple of questions: 1) How do you determine the need for watering in the bag? Because the tree is constantly wet. 2) Have you exposed the black bags to the sun? I heard that it is an important condition to create sauna conditions inside the bag.

    • @marosbonsai
      @marosbonsai  Год назад +1

      Hi Yaroslav, in early weeks I was checking it daily and soon it became obvious it does not have to be sprayed daily with water. Part of the reason was weather. We had very little sunny days, and temperatures were below long term average for spring. So evaporation of the water was minimal.
      2. Exposing to the sun yes, but since there were little to no really sunny days it was OK. You have to take into consideration that it is different thing to expose to the sun bare trunk, without foliage and in march/april. And something different in May during the hot day when tree already have foliage. That's why I was using recommendation of Mauro to change bag from black to transparent. It is much more bearable in transparent bag for the tree and fresh foliage.

    Are you going to do a video about the large field elm on the left?
    I’ve been following its progress on your web blog for many years and regard it as probably the best field elm bonsai out there.

      Thanks, Ian, for your kind words. I personally think the tree is not show ready yet. Despite having good nebari and bark on the trunk, branch structure needs a lot of work. It is clearly visible when without foliage. Honestly, I think it needs close to a decade of work, i hope i have enough time to push it further. But I need to make some minor improvements, so I will wait until foliage drops completely, and I try to make a short episode of the process and say a few words here and there. If you have any particular questions, drop them here, and I will try to tackle them in case it will be in my capacity. Greetings 🙏

      What you have achieved in ten years with this elm is fantastic.
      Even though, as you say, the branches need further refinement, this tree captures the majesty of England’s lost elms like no other I am aware of.
      I look forward to your video and seeing how the tree develops over the coming years.
      Many thanks

    Hallo😊 thank you for this video.
    I still have a question: is the black bag necessery for the first time or do you recommand to chose the milky one for the beginnimg and the whole time at all? I simply can't imagine, how the plant is encouraged to grow in a black atmosphere... but evidently it works.
    I hope for an answer😊
    Nice greetings!

    • @marosbonsai
      @marosbonsai  10 месяцев назад

      Hi Ewa. That's a good question. I start from the end. A black bag is no problem at the beginning since trees do not have leaves, even with leaves after they emerge, they can do well without light for some time.
      Opaque bag is OK if you are afraid. Let's look at it like any bag will provide some benefits for stressed plants - rising and keeping the humidity high and protecting plants from wind. It also it rises temperature inside the bag. Black bags help in rising temperature significantly when in polytunel and sunlight is heating it even more. The question is how high the temperature is good and beneficial. My guess is 20-25°C in spring after collecting is better than 0- 10°C. But if 30-40°C, which could happen inside the bag on a sunny warm spring day in March or April, is a question I don't have a good answer for.

      @@marosbonsai thank you for the answer😊. I will try both methods and will let you know. I hope that mold will not kill my plants🙃🙂🙃. Warm and humid atmosphere, you know... the mushrooms love that.

      Take into consideration that you should open the bag daily, later keeping top of the bag open (Harry Harrington demonstrates it in his bag video). And one more thing you have to take into equation. Auxin is not produced in plants when deprived of light. What auxin does is that it is suppressing buds from opening and developing along its path from the tip of the growth to the roots. It may well be beneficial to a collected tree where we want more backbudding and generation of the new growth for future structure of the bonsai. Just a thought.
