That's very similar to Soljanka! Very popular in eastern Europe and eastern Germany. And thus VERY fitting as a dish from Ostania. The only real difference is that for Soljanka you'd cube the pickles and add them to the stew, together with the pickle juice, while it's still cooking.

I would recommend cran-apple juice as a substitute ingredient. It maintains the red color, while adding a more apple-y taste!
