Also, the whole relationship between Assan and Davrin is just there to be cute, and to sell Assan plushies, of course. Cute, big-eyed animal side-kick and the "adorable" antics that entails which feel completely feel out of place in a setting such as Dragon Age. Add to that the fact that Assan's animations are clearly (and lazily) modelled after a dog's. Speaking of, while Dog in Origins also had his cute moments, they felt natural, not Disney-esque. Not once is it mentioned that Assan and the other griffons, who are brothers and sisters, are still doomed to go extinct (incest is bad, hmkay). The weight of what the Wardens during the Fourth Blight did to the griffons never really gets addressed either (dooming them to their extinction, essentially, if unknowingly so). The whole Gloom Howler storyline is poorly executed, but that's a whole different can of worms... As a Dalish, Davrin's reaction to all of this should have been much more severe. Dalish are more connected to nature, live in symbiosis with it. They treat their halla as equals, not as livestock. So, why would Davrin not address what was done to the griffons by fellow Wardens? Why, at the end of his storyline, is it even an option to keep the griffons alongside the Wardens?! It would've been much more in-character for him to set out and find other surviving griffons and release Assan and his siblings to the wild. Because, let's face it, I highly doubt the Wardens had control over all the griffons in the whole wide world of Thedas. It's a medieval setting. People cannot possibly have settled every corner of it.
As much as I may dislike David Gaider personally, I respect him as a very talented writer... even when he includes his progressivism in his writing.
Dorian despite his flamboyant and flippant behavior his biggest character traits was his Kindness and compassion. You can see it in his party banter, comments after certain missions etc. He gave us an amazing glimpses of the Imperium while certain elements of his character being Imperium born was so different that ours. His different point of views were engaging and his arc and companion quest was gut wrenching. Yes he was gay but it was a PART of his character not ALL of it. He is smart, charming, gentle, sarcastic and utterly brilliant. There is a REASON he is among the most beloved characters in the entire franchise likes of Morrigan, Aliastor etc. He is a GOOD no amazing character. Say what you will about world building, plots of each game but one point they always win were the characters. WERE unfortunately.
19:45 Hawke is so underrated tbh he’s what made DA2 legendary for me even despite its shortcomings
9:49 It’s ciris blood that is special it has no effect on the species she is she is still very much human
Everybody knew Ciri was gonna be the next protag just not a fucking Witcher
All the devs left because the company got too woke, they made their own companies. Also Ciri shouldn’t be a Witcher even with elder blood that doesn’t change her biology or that she is human. The trail of grasses etc would still kill her and there should be no way for her to even become a Witcher since the method was destroyed The Witcher 4 is cooked just trust Nuhre
Looking back they probably would have made Dorian even less nuanced and obnoxious if possible. They've only gotten worse since origins at it.
Wait, who's Neve again? Great video about Dorian and Who?, as usual. Also, the voice actor sounding so bored all the time only adds to her forgettable state.
I dislike Dorian because he is a boring and not interesting character, but in Inquisition, still way better than like most of the characters, and not only that, he's one of the few characters amongst the companions who I think still respect the Grey Wardens? If I remember correctly. Just that alone is enough to earn a pass in my good books. Of course, that is an extremely low bar to pass, but this is what happened when Bioware makes garbage and expect me to like it. Still, can we just pretend Inquisition and Veilguard doesn't exist? After all, people love to trash on DA2 but that was a tragedy of the game having to be created in 16 months, so unfortunately, some things had to take a dipped in quality. Inquisition and Veilguard on the other hand, had years for development, but because of mismanagement, they also didn't have that long of a development time, but that is more unforgivable because they had time but squandered it, just to give us trash and tarnish Dragon Age. So here and now, I vote to pretend those 2 games don't exist and just keep to the head canon that the Mage Vs Templar war is still raging and we are just waiting for the epic conclusion.
As many flaws as DA:2 and Inquisition have, they follow in the footsteps of Origins in one REALLY important way - The companions (and main protagonist!) are noticeably *terrified* of what's happening to the world, and the weight of responsibility they feel for the fact that *they* are the ones who *must* save the world. They weren't "chosen" for the task, they *fell* into the job, victims of circumstance, and accidental (and often reluctant) heroes. Alistair's chirpy laughter often has a slightly hysterical edge to it, Anders and Isabela both start out defiant hedonists, grabbing life by the balls because they know they're one wrong move away from death - They arc away from that to become a violent freedom fighter and a mercenary. Merril delves into 'forbidden' magic and artifice and pays a terrible price, but keeps delving because she knows it's what's needed to save her friends and tribe, even if it means never being able to rejoin her tribe once the battle is over. The constant tension and guilt over his people and the terror that his countrymen might *win* shows in his flippant language and (toward the end of the game) his increasing snippiness and the slight tremor in his voice when he speaks. Cullen becomes more short tempered and implacable, as he watches his friends become prey to the red lyrium as he struggles with his addiction knowing that if he can't break his addiction he'll become just like them. Then there's the Spite, the friendly coffee drinking demon, the Dalish spanner wielding buffoon, and the Old Guy who is so scared of death he engages in an EXCRUCIATING ten minute convo about fucking in a graveyard before becoming a literal skeletal abomination and boffing Rook in his *COFFIN! * Let's not get started on the "Qunari" who can't use the world-appropriate language of their people, and cares more about what people call them in a crisis, than *ACTUALLY SAVING THE WORLD* . I just cant' get past three games of palpable terror at the thought of failing in their mission, only to have THIS as a finale... Disney princesses would act and speak with more gravitas than these pale, washed out characters. It's heartbreaking 😔
Wait is that what they went with for Neve? I thought I was dumb for seeing her as the ice mage after the "cold, hard, truth" not an ice queen who is melancholy due to her own cold nature. This is an M game, meaning it is aimed at adults, and they went with, "I care and want other to care about me" trope, ment more for teenagers and young adults to relate to. After all your vids, I am starting to believe that this is just a fan-fiction D&D campaign set to the theme of Dragon Age. A true shame, we had a cool world, and lost it all to bad fan fiction
@juggernaut5014 Harding is a people pleaser, Davrin is a goody too shoes, Lucanis is a good listener, Emmerich is afraid of getting old, Neve wants to be useful and liked, Taash is non binary, Bellara is quirky. That's it.
@@nuhre That's even more bleak that what I gave the game credit. You are right, these characters are so one note that they can never grow out of it. We got to explore Dorian and Tevinter, and I have still have no idea what Neve adds to the story let alone as what aspect of the human condition she is used to explore. I was hoping we could explore paths that these sorts of mentalities could lead to, but we got this version of Veilguard.
This analysis starts under the basis of not liking something and build from there intead of questioning WHY you see these things in one place and not the other. It feels extremelly hallow. Neve's skills as a detective are borught up IN SEVERAL banters with other characters where Rook can choose to just leave. She doesn't have the ONE flaw she has several and she talks about them, with Rook and with others. A lot of the things you claim that she lacks are in the game but there's a profound refusal to engange beyond what's in plain sight. How does she not feel like a character that belongs in this world when there are cut scens and dialogues and letters where she DOES. We even get to know about her family and she being the only mage and some want to use her for it. NPCs in dock town literally talk to her directly, she shadow dragons have so many notes and dialogues where it's obvious they have history. If she sides with the threads instead companions state that they are against it, or that they dissaprove. Veilguard has flaws in the writing, everything does and nothing is beyond critism, but critisim that lacks depth and true engagment with the source material beyond what's in plain sight is just bad. But hey have a comment for engament I guess
@nerokun7787 thank you 😊
I don't even remember Morrigan saying Andraste was a host for Mythal. That's how unimpactful that was.
Yeah, I felt the same way after my first interaction with her.
The only thing I ever remember about Neve is her stupid hat, half the time I don't even remember her name until someone brings it up. The grey warden dude is the other character I can barely ever remember 😂
I thought for a moment "That's the best Veilguard MC I've seen yet" but then the face animated and I was sad. It's impossible to make them not be kind of creepy.
I made pretty good-looking women, but the moment they started moving, they looked terrible.
And then they decided to ruin poor Dorian too by adding him to Veilguard.
Never have I seen a complaint be "She has no complaints and no positive commentary, I don't even know who you're talking about"
There is a first time for everything.
You could compare the entirety of veilguard against Garrus from mass effect and Garrus would have more depth 💀
@samblindao5421 Garrus is the best thing to ever happen to us as a society, and he does have more depth than all of them combined.
I could tell she sucks because her hat is so stupid. Just look at that thing.
Veilguard broke the first rule of storytelling, show don't tell. Instead of being shown Neve had a desire to be liked by people, we were literally told in an dialogue dump. There wasn't a single instance in the game where Neve was shown to act in a way that would garner more approval from others. In fact, she mostly did things solo lol. The Veilguard writers had no idea how to write compelling characters, because they themselves are not compelling people.
I couldn't have said it better myself.
BioWare: "Neve Gallus, the detective." Korrath: "Who?"
Love this series of videos. You’re basically proving the current BioWare is just in name only. BioWare as we knew is dead. The current writers are hacks. It’s so shameful that they are incapable of writing high quality characters. ME 5 will most likely also be D.O.A. And as a BioWare fan (up to Inquisition), I feel super sad that the old BioWare is gone. And probably forever.
@@ZagXcIv that's why I am looking forward to Exodus. It's made by the actual minds behind dragon age and mass effect.
Neve biggest issue for me is a lack of edge Dorian I might have not liked him and I felt the story with his dad just didn't go anywhere (will admit it's been years so my memory is bad) but there was more to him then just guy from Tevinter. Making Neve hardened basically Batman felt like only thing that made her interesting but also an insult to everything established because she seemed to me before that choice in her personal quest a person who only wanted to do the right thing with no moral gray I doubt without that choice she would have never supported Dorian as the next Grand Mage cause he would of been too extreme and would put Dock Town in danger?
We went from intelligent, complex, and sexy in origins, to stupid, ugly, and entitled in veilguard. How many years to screw everything up?
I would almost pay to see the devs react to your videos picking apart the companions they were so proud of and how they are inferior to any companion in the prior games. I could not remember anything about Neve until you just reminded me. I only remember Lucanis because of his coffee obsession. I am in agreement that companions are more than just help in combat. They are personal connections that invest you in the narrative and give you something to fight for. To paraphrase Mordin from ME2, it is hard to picture countless people with faces that you have never seen but you can picture an individual, or in his case a nephew, and that gives you a personal investment. Fighting for the fate of Thedas is all well and good but it is the people you meet along the way that makes it all worth it. Well written and likable companions will make me want to replay a game so that I can go on another journey with them.
The fact that you can quote Mordin to this day proves he left a mark on you. You won't remember any of the characters from Veilguard a year from now. And that just proves that BioWare, as we know it, is dead
(sorry for the long rant and mistakes xd) Neve is such a ''genshin-like' written character. It's especially annoying that other characters like Bellara constantly reminding you as a player how great/smart/famous Neve is and then in the actual game story there's literally nothing. She doesn't use her detective skills (she just says obvious things in a mysterious tone). She is presented to the player as reliable and responsible but disappears after the destruction of Minrathous (which is logical, but if she had remained it would have given at least some justification for her "reliability"). I mean, all the characters are left to fight the gods, putting aside their personal matters and interests (or so it's implied), but somehow when Neve does the same, she's suddenly special. People in Minrathous treat her as the only one who can solve their problems BUT as someone who used to live in a "corrupt dark city" irl - people who do something like this really suffer the consequences. They don't wear expensive clothes and aren't published in newspapers. In fact, they act more like Anders (as strange as it sounds). The last thing I would like to mention is that you can never get a straight answer from her. I understand that this is part of her “mysterious” persona, but sometimes it feels like she won’t even answer whether she likes black or green tea. Like girl I get it, you're so deep, just answer the question 😭
You can't get a straight answer because there's nothing below the surface. As I said, companions have to first be their own person and have lived a life before the players come in for them to be engaging. None of the Veilguard companions have a past, not one aside from "I have a mortal enemy that you will defeat with me." They are empty cans.
Neve is like those Star Wars action figures released that no one remembers
I like what we hear about Tevinter, mainly from Dorian and Fenris. The mentioning of slaves and being used for blood rituals, and the use being common, the templars acting more like the police instead of an order that can prevent incidents with mages compared to Fereldan and Orlais. Sadly, we only see a little bit of blood magic and none of enslavement. So much was underused or doesn't even exist.
Dorian and Fenris painted us this amazing picture of mages ruling everyone with an iron fist, and then we actually go to Tevinter and... it's boring.
I played the game once, romanced Neve.. and can't tell you a single thing about her besides she's a detective... self proclaimed at that. I still remember Zevran was swinging both ways, as long as he was having Fun, and i never liked Zevran, he's the character i have the shortest interaction with from all 3 games.
Neve doesn't really have anything else but the fact that she's a detective. She's a walking character archetype.
Dorian and Cole were my favorite things about inquisition.
Isn’t it funny the most forgettable character is the supposed girl boss
They try to make all of them super likable and end up making them extremely obnoxious or boring. Or both.
Insightful and charismatic voice, good video.
Thank you 😊
yo! dang ?
08:31 I can't stop laughing at how overdressed are Neve and Rook in that scene where they are throwing rocks to the water.
I’m too distracted by the uncanny valley faces they are pulling; did they let the andromeda team work on this?!
@@lordinquisitor6233the Andrómeda team at least give us Cora Harper's butt.
I don't know if Veilguard has made me realize how good Dorian actually is or it has only made him better in comparison.
We didn't know what we had until we lost it.
