    I had no idea not only that Miss Garland had had a stand in but that Mrs. Doll is still with us at 105 [!]. BTW, at age 30, in 1949, she survived a commercial airline plane crash that killed 36 other passengers and nearly had her foot amputated but defied doctors who said she'd never dance again by pushing herself to overcome their gloomy prediction! If she DOES still have a pair of ruby slippers, I hope she's careful not to wear them out in the rain. IIRC, the 'rubies' were all very carefully assembled tiny pieces of dried cherry gelatin! Thanks for this!

    The tragedy is that all four performers wound up having their 'tomorrows' cut short in no small part due to having had their health compromised via tobacco smoking (and Lucy especially seemed to have her voice . ..affected at least in part due to those coffin nails). On a MUCH lighter note, though, in the first part of the classic 'Lucy Does a Television Commercial' when Lucy took out the television tube and dressed up as a bellhop and announced 'The Lucy Ricardo Show!' to try to impress Ricky to have her on his TV spot, she was dressed up as the then-famous vertically challenged Phillip Morris character 'Johnny the Bellhop' [Johnny Roventini 1910-1998] who'd announced the sponsored show its first few years when originally broadcast.

    What a wonderful thing Lucy did for Mary Jane in what had to be the worst time in her life (and no parent can truly ever 'get over' losing a child)! Yes, playing a goofy character whose biggest worry was how to get herself and Lucy out of Lucy's messes was probably therapeutic for her! It also needs to be said that Mary Jane was very popular with all the 'Lucy Show' and 'Here's Lucy' regulars and provided at least one great benefit. Desi Arnaz, Jr. has said that Mary Jane was 'a calming influence. Which was always sorely needed!'

    Miss Hepburn was amazing from Day One! When she was a teenager in NAZI occupied Holland, she worked for the Dutch Underground while pursuing her goal of being a ballet dancer- smuggling vital communications in her ballet shoes! And, like so many other Dutch citizens, she suffered from malnutrition during the closing days of WWII -despite her aristocratic background. That's one reason she was so dedicated to helping others especially children and teens in UNICEF since she never forgot having had malnutrition! Thanks for that!

      Audrey’s experiences during World War 2 had an enormous impact on her future humanitarian work. She had tremendous empathy in her heart and knew from first hand experience what it meant to go hungry. Miss Schafer seemed as though she'd have been fun to have had for a friend had one had reason to have known her! She'd been friends with both Jim and Henny Backus long before . Years after GI was over, Mr. Backus got cast in a TV movie playing the President of the US- and when Miss Schafer's reaction was 'My God! Henny's running the country!' Also, she kept her age an unlisted number for many decades so folks would be surprised when she died at how much younger she had appeared than her actual age of 90! Thanks for this!

      I absolutely adored Natalie and it was one of the privileges of my life to spend time chatting with her. A number of Hollywood actresses purposely kept their age secret because they were concerned it would limit the type of roles they could be cast in.

    What was funny about Aunt Bee is that she had Miss Bavier's 'Old New York City High Society' accent rather than anything remotely US Southern or North Carolinian (and I'm from somewhere near that ballpark). However, Aunt Bee's US Southern fans never held that against her. I guess they must have just thought that that was Aunt Bee's way of speaking! Sadly, Miss Bavier wound up regretting her move to North Carolina since so many of her neighbors not only called her 'Aunt Bee' but some even spoke to her as though she WAS Aunt Bee. On the other end of the spectrum, Betty Lynn moved to Mr. Griffith's very hometown of Mt. Airy and she was happy to let them embrace her as Thelma Lou and they treated her like a queen! Yep, Betty Lynn who'd never married and only had a few distant cousins FOUND her family and had a happier twilight than Mr. Griffith himself had had as a child growing up there.

    It's a good thing you caught the door before it latched! I'm not so sure you'd have 'perished' but you and your pal likely would have gotten a bit dehydrated and/or soiled yourselves before you were found- to say nothing of the 20 Century Fox security busting you for trespassing. Now, maybe if the area held nitrate stock film, it might have spontaneously combusted and that could have been a means of demise. I once nearly got locked inside a museum in New Orleans after closing time but, thankfully, there was a guard there who heard my pleas and let me out before the outer door had been entirely secured ! More than once since then I've wondered how it would have been to have been in same quarters overnight with that much history at hand. So I somewhat get having mixed feelings being stuck where one shouldn't have been BUT being surrounded by history!

    • @ChuckDransfield
      @ChuckDransfield День назад

      Oh yes. In my description I said “almost” perished in a film vault. I was joking about what I said but admittedly spending an entire weekend trapped in such a manner would definitely not have been fun (no matter how much I love being surrounded by motion picture history)😄🤗

    • @ChuckDransfield
      @ChuckDransfield День назад

      As I recall the vault had heavy concrete type walls which may have been a security precaution for the storage of highly combustible nitrate film. That type of film stock has the potential for being extremely dangerous.

  • @wardarcade7452

    Interesting story about how that hairdresser saved the young Miss Taylor's tresses. Good for him! She had more serious lifelong repercussions via her time in the movie. Namely, she fell from the horse and broke her back during the racing scene (and was included of the film itself)! Yes, the young trouper did her best to shrug it off ASAP but she'd be plagued by serious back problems the rest of her life and this was a contributing factor in her getting prescribed pain medications which would also be something Miss Taylor would struggle to overcome in later years. However, this did nothing to dampen her adoration of her stallion costar called King Charles (a grandson of the famous Man O' War) whom she actually BOUGHT and had him cared for the rest of his life from the time she was 13 to his death ten years later. Oh, and she kept on riding horses for many decades thereafter despite the above mentioned back issues! Thanks for sharing this!

    Yes, the odd thing about the 'Sesame Street' episode is that it scared so many children viewers (and angered their parents) that the episode was only shown a single time and never repeated by PBS (though I did eventually see a copy of it on RUclips but I'm not sure it's still available). Interestingly enough, it had the WotW allied with Oscar the Grouch AND had her 'disguise' herself as a sweet little old lady to infiltrate the Street. IIRC, this was about the time she'd become semi-famous playing Cora the Maxwell House Storekeeper who seemed like a fave older relative one wish one could visit more often than just those ads! Yes, I can see why Miss Hamilton wanted to calm children down and thankfully Mr. Rogers was a great help to her in that goal.

    One thing that was unusual about Miss Swanson was that she became a vegetarian and health food devotee many decades before it was trendy. Considering that she would live to 84, this may have served her well. In spite of being only 4 foot 11 inches in height, she was definitely a larger than life person! BTW, in addition to having been married six times, one of her paramours was Joseph Kennedy, Sr. - and when she found out that he'd somehow finagled it so that she herself would pay for the 'gifts' he'd given her, it somewhat cooled the bond. Anyway, one of their mutual acquaintances later said that 'Joe still carries a torch for you!', Miss Swanson replied, 'Good! I hope it BURNS him!'

      Clearly Barbra was deeply moved by this. Her performance in Funny Girl is luminous and magical as a result.

    Interesting story about Mr. Thompson saving the day by pulling Lucy's pleated shirt from the table right before they were ready to shoot [maybe that's why she wore slacks and/or narrow skirts as soon as she could in the early 60's]. Anyway, speaking of the phrase 'keep your eye on the money and *I'm* the money', that reminds me of a poignant tale I heard about her in the mid-1960's when one of her accountants got upset because there was a great deal of shrinkage of office supply pencils from Desilu Studios and, upon hearing that, she opened a desk drawer and showed him that it was LOADED with the 'missing pencils'. She explained that 'when you grow up not having your own pencil, you make SURE you don't run out.' The accountant had to explain that since she was the president of Desilu and the pencils were the property of Desilu that she was stealing from HERSELF!

      Yes, I recall that story and agree that it is poignant. Thank you for reminding me of this.

    I had to take a break because I became so emotional over your story Chuck. I’m now back watching the other half. Also, it’s wonderful to see you Joyce and realize you have a channel that I am now subscribed to. It’s also great to meet Pomona. I’m also subscribed to YOU! Really excellent video so far. Congratulations on this video Chuck.
