Medford OTF Proof Strike Merc-1 First Impressions and Thoughts!
I really want to try a Strider but am yet to do so - partially because of the price and partly because of that lock stick issue. My two XM-18’s have had lock stick issues on and off but it seems to be happening less and less over time. Haven’t had the same issue with my XM-24. All are the newer Tri-way models. I’ve got two small Sebenzas, and while the Hinderers are fun to flip (or flick as one of my XM-18’s is a non-flipper) I have more appreciation for the feel of the Sebenzas. To me they aren’t really comparable though as they are such different knives. I plan on buying more of both, and for general actual cutting tasks I’d take a CRK with it’s deep hollow grind. It’s really a personal taste thing though.
hey! How's your Strider doing? Any improvements? What your thoughts about steel on blade? Thanks
I did a Holy Trinity video yesterday. So you’ll find out there! lol I haven’t tested the steel out yet. I’m still frustrated about the lock stick. But if you watch my new video you’ll see what I mean.
@@coreyketrow1376 thanks! I appreciate your response. I definitely wii! I do have few SNGs but with XHP, S35 and 20CV - never have any lockstiks problems.
Pretty cool. I need one to show on my channel. Very nice knife. I subbed to you. Keep working hard
@@Weldandcarry I appreciate that brother!
Gorgeous blade Congratulations! I just picked up that exact knife except with Translucent green scale on show side brass hardware Love ! Sexy beast Like you I love big knives Ricks knives are 2nd to none IMO great vid Thanx
@@nightrider5109 Thanks brother! I appreciate you watching!
They make good knives but when I tried one I couldn't get past that late detent with the flipper. If I liked the knife enough I'd chop that flipper off for sure.
@@chriswebb3018 What model did you have with the late detent? Are they all like this?
Been thinking about picking one of these up. If I could find one with factory Ti scales and a blade shape I like... and preferably the full thickness version, I’d be more inclined to buy one.
@@adamzappia2213 I agree! I don’t know why they don’t make a huge batch of full Ti models? They’d sell all day long
I think I need to try an Eklipse. I’m really curious about the ergos compared to the XM-18.
@@adamzappia2213 I’d say the ergos are a little bit better than the XM 3.5.
Nice. This is the first video on this knife I’ve seen posted with the new grind and the first of your videos I’ve seen too. I’ve just subbed and about to watch a few of your other videos now. I managed to get a textured working finish Ti scale and one of the 2024 tabs a week or two before the first drop of the XM-24 Hollow ground slicers on the Hinderer website and then jumped in immediately when the knives dropped and got the stonewash blade/working finish lock side with OD green G10 scale. I’ve had the knife a week or two now (it seemed to take forever to get to me here in Australia) and within an hour of getting it I had it apart, swapped out the bearings for the Teflon washers and threw on the Ti scale and clip and it’s now my favourite Hinderer folder. I prefer it to my two XM-18’s (both Bowies: one flipper and the other a non flipper). I’ve also got the Hinderer Ka-Bar fixed blade (so far it’s the only knife I’ve posted a video on... if you’re interested, it’s on my channel called Philosophy on Point so have a look if you’re interested. Shouldn’t be hard to find as there’s not a lot of videos on that knife). I’ve also filmed a comparison video of the two versions of the XM-18 bowie but havent had time to edit it. BTW, the Teflon washers are super smooth and with the heavy blade it still drops shut but it’s much more of a controlled drop which I prefer. So far on the smaller XM-18’s I prefer the bearings though I’ve only briefly tried one with the Teflon. The copper hardware is actual copper from my understanding, not anodised Ti, so it will patina in time. Anyway, nice review 👍
Expensive but a lifetime purchase so… Thanks for the review. Maybe the smooth criminal one of these days ? 👍🏻
@@nicolasstraub8893 I haven’t tried the Smooth Criminal yet. It’s a little small for me but I’m sure the action and lock up are the same?! Thanks for watching!
This knife is a pure beauty. Love the purity of the blade. Very easy to carry. Many thanks for the review 👍🏻
@@nicolasstraub8893 Thabks brother! It’s very underrated
I just bought the Stich in the same color pattern as yours. And now that I see yours, I like the way it looks as well so now I’m going to have to buy this model as well to match the Stich. Damn this video. Lol just kidding awesome video thank you.
@@freddybusa2006 I appreciate you watching! You won’t be disappointed I promise!!
Bruh, same coloration is perfect! Similar Comment!
Beast of a knife
Big nose ass blade
Same dude. I ordered the corda pattern one from knife center but with blue accents. It'll be my first arius and I've been wanting one for years!! Should be here Tuesday!
@@edcevo3052 Congrats brother! You’re going to love it!
Trying to decide between the coated and uncoated blade. Its a hard one...
@@killough71010 I had to go with the green and black! The perfect combo for me. Check out my review
@coreyketrow1376 ok, will do. I know the green and black is so striking. It's a DLC coating correct?
@@killough71010 I believe it is. But am not certain. I don’t think they use pvd
Did it cost 2 thousand dollars? He makes some of the better knives, but his prices are absolutely ridiculous.
@@bullridermusic2054 These are 600 but will eventually go down in price hopefully.
@@coreyketrow1376 ok thx
The marks you see on the backspacer and clip are intentional. It’s to match the stonewashed blade. All Koenig Arius’ with brightwashed blades have that raw stonewashed backspacer and clip to match.
@@maahes9561 Thanks for the answer! I appreciate it and you watching
Tanto is the downside IMO. From a sharpening perspective they are twice the work to restore the edges.
@@JinkxSoldga I agree. I just loved the tanto in the two tone.
Don't really care about the video but if you keep playing Primus I'll watch all of your videos.😊
I don’t think you’re wrong…I have a crk 31 currently and a xm-18 skinny…that’s a 500 knife and I can hear that lock disengage…my caveman brain still wants this even after watching it. I do hear they “break in”. Let us know what you do
@@EastCoastMan603 I appreciate you watching and I agree! I actually took it apart today and cleaned and oiled it properly. The action is so much better and it is slowly breaking in. Hopefully it goes away all together.
@@coreyketrow1376appreciate the report. I might full send on a pd1 crosshatch..
Nice blade, good song
@@tims_always_fishing7117 Thanks brother!
Its funny I started off collecting seriously in 2017 with a socom elite a green clip point. Ive spent thousands on medfords, reeves hinderers and many many other brands only to realize the socom elites are the best bang for your buck and my favorite ive ever handled
Definitely the top one I love the length and the handle it looks like a do everything type of knife for me
@@JSXlijbeubl It’s a nice choice! CRK Sebenza 31 Insingo!
Just picked one of these up. Should be here tomorrow. I don’t know why I waited so long to try one out. I snagged the same version just in a clip point blade
Nice! You’ll be very happy with it! And thanks for watching
I like it, carry a knife all the time legally or not.
Cool knife - great review. Thank you - really appreciate you taking the time to make this.
Thanks! It’s an extremely great flipper!
Why are your hand so dry first
My hands are always dry. Especially in this season. I’m not sure what that has to do with knives? Thanks for watching
I like it I ordered mine in December of 2022 haven’t received it as of yet I ordered a strike proof like yours
Give Medford a call and they’ll be able to tell you exactly when it will be shipped and what number yours is. Mine was #15. Let me know what they say and thanks for watching
@@coreyketrow1376 well I talked to Amy 2 weeks ago and she said hopefully soon I am number 63 two weeks ago
@@markjohnson6485 Hmm. Well keep me updated. Hopefully you’ll get your email soon!
Lol goodluck dudes out of business now
GEEZZZZUS!!!!!????? You purchased 2YEARS AGO!!!!! And still hasn’t… ok yea i understand they make them as you order but 😫 I have one in the cart amongst other things, looks like i can get my knife 2030 the way things look.
Plus they make the mongrel which is a flipper as well, My thing is if you're having trouble with the knife you just bought either return it to the store and get another one or send it in for them to fix.
Agreed
Nice one I'd love to get my hands on it! Just reviewed the m48 and it'll be published tomorrow
Thanks. The action is outstanding! I love the M-48. I’ll be reviewing it as well soon
Insigno blade and regular drop point blade are same prize when size is same (small or large), what price difference on the blades are you talking about sir?
I was mistaken. Thanks for the comment.
@@coreyketrow1376 it happens! Keep up the good work buddy.
Beautiful otf 👍🇺🇸❤️🇫🇷
Thanks for watching! And it has amazing action.
I ordered mine is December of 2022 a strike proof dagger blade but I still haven’t received mine
I’m sure it won’t be much longer. You can always call them and they’ll tell you when it will ship. Let me know what they say and thanks for watching brother!
@@coreyketrow1376 I e mailed Amy and she said hopefully not too much longer that was 2 weeks ago i haven’t saw him do a doxing video in about 3 weeks where he was reading the names off of those tha were shipping . She told me 23 of the strike proof daggers have shipped and I am number 43 on the list of the dagger strike proofs
I heard they run better with 7 washers
Haters are going to hate. Thanks for watching
@@coreyketrow1376 actually I think Greg is a cool guy I met him few time at the knife show but his washer theory is kinda wacky
Really nice looking blade. I have two MKTs and love them both. I am hoping he will make a gravity knife as well
Thanks. What Medford models do you have
I have a video about the Medford OTF with Pretorian blade and I haven’t used the word “nice” even once. I also think that if you want to be helpful to Greg Medford, giving him excuses is not the way. He’s a Marine so should be able to take some constructive criticism. BTW, Kershaw also released their first ever OTF late last year and they nailed it!
I watched your video and I thought it was fair. I didn’t think you were too harsh. I have 2 Kershaw livewires and they are nice as well. I just have had a different experience with mine I suppose. I don’t think I gave any excuses but rather had stated the obvious. Either way I appreciate you watching and commenting. I’ll continue to watch your videos as I think you do a good job.
I got the Praetorian variant, and may have sent it in prematurely as I was getting retraction failures and rattle. I got it back from service and now it has a spring ting on open and close.
I would send it back in and have that taken care of. I know it’s a hassle but these are the things that Greg wants to know is happening on the first launch of these.
@@coreyketrow1376 Yeah I send an email yesterday and will be sending it back for them to check it out.
Yeah I sent them a video and they agreed so hopefully better on the 2nd time for service. The primary grind is different on the one I got in too.
@BladeBanter Did they say what they would do about the grind?
@@coreyketrow1376 They didn't will probably send an email to bullet point and order a driver to be able to open it up on my own too.
I am a huge Microtech fan and I am also a huge Medford fan - I do not have the Merc-1 yet but I sure will. I am thrilled that Medford is into the OTF game - it’s a great time to love USA knives! Please keep us posted!
I couldn’t agree with you more! And I sure will. Thanks for sharing brother!
