If you really wanna make em piss salt, put this in a deck that can give it away, then use Mutated Cultist to remove all the counters from it. They lose the game, and you get 4 less mana on the next spell you cast. Profit!

not the colors, but if you have a dethrone deck like marchesa the black rose, gaining life isn't the best option! so there is a scenario where gaining life is a problem

I would like to nominate Approach of the Second Sun as a good alt win condition given the amount of card draw you have in the deck AND for the fact that it’s lifegain is technically relevant for this build!

Wouldn't recommend Stormtide Leviathon here. It's great for evasion but... it also puts about half your creatures out of commission. About half your big creatures don't have islandwalk or flying. This also stops some of your smaller creatures such as Augury Adept and Daxos of Meletis. Nykthos Paragon probably isn't worth it here either. MOST of the life gain in here is of the 'lots of small instances' variety which will only get you a counter or two per turn with Nykthos Paragon. Noble Purpose and True Conviction work well with this but they're just two cards in the deck (and if you've managed to stick a True Conviction you're probably about to win anyway). Have you considered Extort effects? The deck CAN run Syndic of Tithes, Basilica Guards, Knight of Obligation, and Blind Obedience (and Blind Obedience is worth running anyway). Being able to potentially tack an extort effect onto EVERY spell you cast can add up very quickly.

Curse of Vitality is a nonbo, we want to tap will for discount on our turn. Curse of Vitality gains us mana discout on other people turns, better to replace it with some card draw.

I've been wanting to make a Big Willie Style deck for so long but couldn't find out how to make it interesting enough to construct. This is awesome!

Will was certainly overlooked when compared to Rowan from that set. My Azorious commander is Kwain because Group hug works if you understand stax. Also Tainted Remedy is the reason to avoid life gain.

so the obvious answer is when someone has a Plague Drone on the field that turns lifegain into life loss, but that so obviously hoses this deck so hard it's the no brainer answer. So here's my sneaky answer When you're running a Lichs Mirror Near Death Experience deck and gaining life will delay your win for a turn and lose you the game!

I never thought of this! I always play control or try to overwhelm with flocks of flying creatures when I play Azorius. This looks like fun. Dude, you build great decks!

Very cool deck, especially doing something different with Azorius. One card that I think would fit in very well would be Soul of Eternity. It's a huge creature that can be played for very cheap in this deck. Plus with the Encore ability, you have more options in case you have nothing in your hand, and it gives your Graveyard more of a use. Really underrated card

I love the deck plan! I have a Will, Scion of Peace deck that goes for big instants and sorceries but I may swap some of cards around taking some of the recommendations you mentioned!

But the card effect means owner loses, not the controller? You are still the "owner". Opponent is the controller? As per text on the broken man- "whenever a card you *own* attacks you..."

Also fine in xavier sal proliferate. You can either proliferate oil counters by saccing another creature, or sac archfiend if push comes to shove to stop it from ending you.

But... Doesn't this give you back the creature and it makes you lose now? For an game ender sure. But mid game against 4 others. Hm. Needs more work.

Used this in gitrog, ravenous ride and thalia and gitrog. Card is hardly jank, just needs a good home.

How would it work with x spells?

Should have included a note of a plan once you get the Archfiend back after having that opponent lose the game. Control reverts back to you and now you are going to die on your upkeep without a plan.

Ayara, Widow of the Realm is also great for this. I use it for her front side. Absolute bomb. Couple turns of serious damage, sac for more damage and life

I've thrown this into my Jon Irenicus deck AND Volrath the Shapestealer. Jon Irenicus for that last oil counter, because if you do it before, they can drain you. But Volrath will NEVER see that trigger if he becomes a copy of it. Add proliferate and you never lose the Archfiend.

It’s not even a jank card in 60 card formats. There’s entire lists in pioneer built around that card. So I was very confused at first until you said Jon irenicus, then I went “ah, commander. That makes sense”

So cool idea, but what happens after they lose? Doesn’t the archfiend come back to you and you lose on your next upkeep? When a permanent changes control from the battlefield doesn’t it come back to the original controller when the other dies?

Oh this one's awesome! My friend plays it in Animar Elemental tribal where the generic cost gets majorly reduced.

Would be good for protecting animar soul of elements, basically phase animar out for a blue if it has 6 counters on it for a 10/10 flyer
