And now in 2023 (going to 2024) IT startup scene is letting people go en masse. Due to high euribor. Investors are not pumping money into random IT startups that generate no profit. And rightfully so. :) Already 4 of my developer/engineer friends have been let go in the past 2 months, and new places are offering 30%+ less salary, because "good times are over" now that money has value

No worries, the Estonians themselves make mistakes all the time :D. But for me Russian has actually been extremely difficult to learn (I understand but can't speak) because there are also those stem changes but very different compared to ours. :D What I wanted to say: If you try to speak Estonian you are allowed to make mistakes, Estonians love their language spoken by friendly foreigners :)

The principle of the Estonian case system is easy to comprehend for a native Finnish speaker familiar to the southwestern dialects of finnish in which the word endings are shortened like in estonian if compared with standard written finnish. (Maybe due to some ancient migration from Estonia to southwesterbn finland or something like that,) So for example the word ranta (beach) is in Finnish: ranta - rannat, rannan - rantojen, rantaa - rantoja. So it is easy to learn just how many letters you drop from the ending of the finnish language word. Or if not directly then the estonian word will at least resemble some finnish dialect form. But because written or officially spoken finnish was designed quite conservative in the 19th century during the national awakening, the informal spoken finnish uses very much the shorter forms with letters dropped of from the end of the words. So for example in estonian I = ma, you = sa while in written standard finnish (and some dialects) I = minä and you = sinä but in informal spoken finnish there may be I =mä, you = sä.

Actually, there is a sentence order structure. I sometimes tend to end my sentences with verbs. So during high school and the end of middle school, we had to write a lot of essays and my teacher basically marked me down in almost every other sentence for incorrect sentence structure. A similar thing happened when I was writing my bachelor's and master's thesis. It wasn't as bad, but still. Even though the reader could understand what I wrote.

I am a native English speaker and I have lived in Tallinn for 26 years. Even from the start I deliberately avoided the expat society and my social circle comprised pretty well all Estonians apart from some business contacts about which I had little choice. It took some time to get started, but over time I became more confident and can hold my own, being almost fluent; Estonians now seem to think that I am of Estonian heritage but born outside the country, so I suppose my skills are reasonably competent. I would say that if you expect to make any kind of life for yourself, irrespective of what country you have chosen, you should prioritise learning the national language; to do anything else is insulting to your adopted home. If you are there only on a temporary basis such as to attend school or university, then there is little point if your are in the capital as you will have neither the time nor the motivation to learn Estonian, and most of your social circle will be people like you who are there for the same reason and are using English as a lingua franca. Don't stress about it.

Thank you, very interesting video for me as an Estonian to watch🥰. Jäääär is like Jää = Ice + edge = äär . As previously mentioned, honey cake = mee+kook and wooden table = puu+laud . It's true that, as an Estonian, I don't really think about how or from what words are inflected or what the endings are. You explained everything very nicely. I myself could not explain Estonian grammar to a foreigner, to be honest. 😅

How do you feel about a Russian doing evil or stern in our homeland Estonia, to our young people who do not speak Russian. Do you also expect thislanguage from Finnish or Italian or Spanish schoolchildren? This is arrogance characteristic only of Russian people. Apart from that, we have not forgotten Russia's crimes in Estonia. We are also aware of the Soviets' wish and longing for Putin take back Estonia to Russia. Too often we hear from Russians that they do not want to learn our national language. There are a lot of Russian citizens of Narva, Sillamäe and Lasnamäe in Tallinn who do not want to integrate and want to create their own little Russian country here. They fight against change in every way. Lasnamäe is ugly precisely because "Russian culture" reigns there. Every Estonian who has bought a home there tries to leave there as soon as possible. Now think about it, is it still weird to assume that we expect a Russian person to learn the language in their country of residence? When you arrive here , is it hard to say or mention that you've started your studies? In my opinion, Estonians are very supportive of those who try to speak. Crossing the road in many respects is by no means unique to Estonia. I've seen it all over the world. Even in Moscow. I just came from Spain via Finland and there were also such road crossings in both.

as native estonian speaker, who has learned some... 6 i guess? depends. foreign languages (1 russian 2 english 3 lithuanian 4 german 5 greek 6 hebrew 7 polish 8 spanish 6,5 latin; scratch greek and hebrew, i barely remember letters now, anyways) i can only testify: it is true that only 3 first foreign languages are difficult to learn. from 4th it is much easier. there forms kinda self (like bookself) or grid in your brain, first 3 are like building it, and then you just fill it. there is some scientific name for that grid, don't remember. generative grammar? and it does not depend, are they same family or not. so, advise: learn some 3 easier languages first, and then tackle estonian. of slavic languages russian is not easiest. hebrew has tons of rules but once you get them, you just ride on them (i never said i got there...) german is next to estonian in difficulty. maybe, if your native language is english, try: latin or italian, spanish, greek or, say, czech. or, if brave, german. considering, where your travels take you. and when you put in all this hard work and speak nearly perfect estonian - estonians will still correct you or worse, try to speak english. not bc we're assholes (that might be 1 factor), but this culture classification on scale textual -- contextual. i think most latin, esp brazilian culture is extreme contextual - when speaking, more info is in context, how you speak, not what you say. german and estonian culture is extreme textual - what you say exactly is important, poor grammar might be verrry confusing, so let's better speak english, so to say. :)

Yeah full time living in Kuressaare is a bit booring, living in Pärnu it was better, specially all year long, Kuressaare dies out at winter and the storms there can be real bad at winter, also can be bad ones in Pärnu(experienced in both places one of the worst ones in decades in eatch) but in Pärnu the locistics for food/essentials and overall transportation is better also a lot more to do all year long living.

09:13 Suposed to be old style Estonian burger but not actually, old ones had no spices exept salt and pepper, rarely anything else at all, also the meat was not premade patties but made on the spot(out of scratch) and that was one of the major selling point why it tasted so good. Also old one just had hacked kabage, the sauce (made from hapukoor aka Estonian sourcout, mayo and ketcup all made in Estonia for freshes and quality of taste) and the meat mostly kotlett, this is the basic aka bare minimum. Often an pan fried egg and/or chees was added. Not that mutch variaty but it tasted good, todays remakes aka imitations of the old ones fail any kind of taste test that why they are not that good. I have kept the old style burger alive for 30 years making it for friends and family all that time every year dozens of times, but as cooking is not my field of job (IT is) i have not done anything with it (yeah i went to a school of culinary and have been cooking/making food and own resepies since i was 4 years old). I will give u a promice, if i get wealthy (to own house and no payment obligations/loans to pay and have a good stable income) and bearable stable health, i will start a small food business making good old and normal(est) food that tastes real good with normal price (something like 1,5 for the basic burger and 2,5€ the big burger with the egg and cheese and extra kotlett added). Why i would say that is that so many not only friends and family (even strangers) have pleaded me to make my food for sale too (example, last year a friend bleeded me to make him my recepy based potato salad and offered 50€ for 1kg) and similar reasons.
