Model Railroad Update 105 - The Large Model Railroad & Rabbit Holes (Building Hell Gate 3)
Certain aspects of the OC&RG have eluded the track plan. These things need to be worked out in three dimensional space. Rabbit holes have been explored and decisions have be made.
Please keep in mind this was recorded weeks ago... mid to late July to be precise.

Some might find this one interesting. It was not uncommon to run a third rail in between the standard gauge rails so that narrow gauge traffic and standard gauge traffic could share the same route (Dual Gauge). Interesting topic on large vs shelf railroads. Your scale railroad build is epic and an amazing project to watch along with. I've been learning from your demonstrations and explanations. The scale of your effort is massively beyond my reach but your applied principles are very useful to a newbie like myself with a very limited modeling experience. Thanks for sharing. Regards.

    Great lesson Dennis about going down the rabbit hole... I'm building an On30 layout, that is 2 feet wide (almost like a shelf railway)but it's 22 feet long. I find very interesting and challenging on what does where to fit in. I almost what to create a second level with a switch back to get to the second level, but i dont know. guess time will tell.

    I love your theory on the whole big vs small debate! I made a whole video about it myself and people mostly just completely mistook me saying "size doesn't matter" and saying small is terrible... Wise words. It's all relative, there are so many things to consider. I may touch on this again once I have the time saver up and running again as part of the OC&RG. Deep thoughts with Otter Creek. I'm also concerned that some may misunderstand my take as well. I don't view Boomer as a gatekeeper at all, he has only ever been complementary of my efforts. Hey Dennis, love what you said about experts. Most probably don’t even have a model railroad or build anything. I really enjoy the journey you are on. I don’t mean to contradict myself but have you considered a cassette at the end of staging. It may enable you to turn a locomotive without having to pick it up? I personally don’t like to handle my stuff once it’s on the layout. Sorry if I overstepped.

    • @OtterCreek
      @OtterCreek 21 час назад

      Thanks Richard! Not sure if I even mentioned that, the whole reason for considering a TT is to keep my grubby paws of the models! I'm still considering a few things. The biggest issue is getting to the cassette or TT. I'll have to engineer the scenery well to make it work. The easiest solution is to put on some soft cloth gloves! I have confirmed that a turntable in the staging yard can work, It's just a matter of engineering if I move forward with it. You haven't overstepped lol. You are absolutely not a "drive by" commenter as I like to call them. Some make it obvious they didn't even watch the whole video, let alone have an understanding of my vision and approach. Thanks for the update, Dennis, and I appreciate your candor and enjoy coming along down the rabbit holes with you and seeing you solve them. I count you and Boomer among the dozen or more modelers that have influenced me and kept my interest moving ahead on my own layout. I have a shelf layout due to the limited available space that I have to build one, but I know if I had another room, there's be another room of model railroad. (Truth be told, I am envious of your space and your workshop space.) The large layout is a good dream, and I love seeing you following yours. "Experts" be damned, full steam ahead!

    • @OtterCreek
      @OtterCreek День назад

      Very humbling words Paul! I very intentionally didn't want a shelf layout, or at least I didn't want all of it to be shelf. I've tried to avoid running track parallel with the isles. One of the things that I was never satisfied with on my two previous Shelf layouts, was a lack of "Journey" between locations. I've always wanted to feel like I'm going somewhere with a train. I have that now and I like it so much better. Thanks Paul!

    Very nice update, Dennis. Your era mimics the 1800’s, just like The transcontinental railroad was built in six years almost entirely by hand. Workers drove spikes into mountains, filled the holes with black powder, and blasted through the rock inch by inch. Handcarts moved the drift from cuts to fills. It’s definitely complicated like it was. 🤣😃😆. Ha Ha I do like watching the plans, the process , the building of your railroad. Keep up the awesome work. Have a great weekend. 😎👍🏼

    Hey it's really coming along! I like watching you go down these rabbit holes. Not just because it's entertaining, but it's also helpful at times. One of those "learn from my mistakes" type deals. I also decided against doing a helix on my layout. I really wanted to connect the two decks because I have Rico right underneath Durango, so the helix would've allowed me to connect the RGS on the lower deck to the D&RG on the upper deck. But like you said, it's just not worth it.

And one will be right under the benchwork inside a tunnel portal. It almost spells a place where disasters could happen and just be out of reach. I guess we need to see the next video and how you finalize that track portion... I'd also try to get as wide curves as possible on your standard gauge track, especially because it'll be hidden. Remember it's the HO (Hugely Oversized) scale that needs curves <------------- this big ---------->

    Howdy Dennis! I'm wondering. (uh oh🤔) You could eliminate the turnout by the turntable and just curve the tracks into the turntable and also make the staging tracks longer, if your turntable has a retractable tapered pin on the end of the table, that you engage into a tooling bushing at each rotary position (for perfect, repeatable track alignment). Those D-G turnouts are gorgeous🤗 by the way! . . . . . . 🚂Lawrence . . . . . .

    Hi Dennis, I’m not sure how good you are at rerailing rollingstock but as you might be aware a turntable is one of the most common places to derail a train. Now combine that with low clearances for Hell’s Gate, you might find yourself in a pickle uncoupling and retailing trains on the SG runaround. Food for thought but you’ll need clearance at least to get your hand in there if it’s a manual turntable.

    Some nice progress here. It's interesting that you are considering 18" curves. I'm modelling N scale and consider 18" radius too tight. I am, however, not doing narrow gauge. We visited MOTAT a couple of days ago. It is a museum in Auckland. They have a pretty good collection of trams. Those things can negotiate some wicked curves!

    • @OtterCreek
      @OtterCreek 8 дней назад

      It's not that I'm considering 18" radius as a desired element. I'm curious if it's an option. The section I'm working on now for the standard gauge will be hidden so I'm not concerned about the appearance, only the functionality. There are two locations on the already built section of the railroad that I had to go with 18" radius just because of space. The OC&RG is a mountain railroad so tight curves are some times necessary just like the prototype! :-). Thanks for stopping by!

    • @warrenholmar1129
      @warrenholmar1129 7 дней назад

      @@OtterCreek I have a similar problem with my "coffee table." Due to space I am having to use a much tighter radius than I would like. I am also hiding it in a tunnel. When we finally have the space to build an actual layout I intend to use much bigger radius curves. As a Kiwi all of our railway here is 3'6" (narrow gauge). While it isn't as narrow as the 3' you are modelling there are still some very tight radius curves. In our trucks we have a sort of GPS that also shows the railway. There are some ridiculously tight curves where the rail almost does a 180 and comes back on itself. NZ has 4-8-4 locomotives that are the biggest I'm aware of that ran on the mainline. There are a few Garrets but they are more static displays that were rescued from the cutting torch in South Africa. We saw what looked like a 4-8-2 2-8-4 just south of Auckland with two other locomotives with a very African appearance. The embellishments on the smoke box etc. Did the brass locomotive come with anything indicating a minimum radius?

    Hi, this is all fascinating to me, I started watching Boomer for his scenery work and ended watching the entirety of his River Road Vlogs. I'm coming from a Wargaming background, hence the scenery interest, and I've certainly learnt a lot from Boomer! However I feel more drawn towards the Steam/American West, even though I'm in the UK, just appeals more to me than modern trains do. I've heard Boomer mention you a few times when I've watched the Second Section Podcasts (need to watch more of those too), so when your video popped up in my feed I thought I'd take a look. I love watching how you guys build things and following the progress from start to finish. The one thing that does confuse me is this "same scale but different size" thing. Were the actual Prototypes different sizes in real life too? This dual track is also amazing, A lot of things would need to alter in my physical environment before I could think about doing a Layout, leaning towards a Shelf Layout, as the workshop isn't fit enough to work in let alone run trains. In the mean time I guess I'll be working my way through the Otter Creek videos 😂. I've also found a local Model Railway Club, which I hope to visit soon. Apologies for the length of this comment! Cheers, Mick

      Thanks for the comment and the view! Your story sounds familiar to me. I got into model railroading because I was also looking for scenery techniques for Warhamer (WHFB). All of my minis are in a display case in the house now that I'm a model railroader! I'm also a big fan of Boomer, his channel is a great gift to the hobby. Yes, the Narrow gauge equipment was that much smaller than standard gauge. Narrow gauge railways tended to be in more mountainous regions where their size is more conducive to sharper curves and clinging to the sides of cliffs!

      @@OtterCreek Yeah snap!! I've got an old Dogs of War project I want get done as a display army. Been more into converting Marines and Orks recently. Starting a new job soon, so once some bills are sorted out I'll need to decide if the old Workshop is saveable or go for a new Garden Room, that's liveable from the start. Ah! That makes sense now, yeah. Wouldn't want your Railcars tumbling down the mountain, cheers!

    Nice update. I must have missed the reason why the standard gauge is on plywood and the narrow gauge is on spline. Can you explain in next video? Great progress. Thanks for sharing!!

    • @OtterCreek
      @OtterCreek 8 дней назад

      Thanks Larry! It will all make sense eventually, the standard gauge is only a small staging yard, two tracks with at least one turnout. Better suited for plywood. The Narrow gauge is coming from across the room from a different elevation, single track no turnouts. Better suited for spline.

    Are you sure you want to eliminate part of the turnout? It's going to limit operations or expansion in the future. It's your call, but I would reconsider this.

    • @OtterCreek
      @OtterCreek Месяц назад

      Of course I’m sure, there is no way to expand where the narrow gauge is going. It’s already built and scenicked. have no plans on changing anything on the time saver. It would look silly to bring the dual gauge to an already laid and ballasted narrow gauge track. Thanks for stopping by.

    Dennis, is the peninsula you originally planned as roaring fork built already? Great job on this section of benchwork.

    • @OtterCreek
      @OtterCreek Месяц назад

      Yes.. Roaring Fork was one of the names I used for Basalt Co for a while. It's now Frying Pan. Easier to say!

    Hi Dennis, I’m sure that you built your benchwork square and the wall is forcing the problems at the front, so I think the easiest and most practical way to fix it is to shim the back where it meets the wall. The other issue could be resolved by joining the two types of track before it goes under the top. I’m sure that you will figure it out. The only suggestion you ever took of mine was the numbering of the towns to number the trains, so we know it will be thought through by you and you will come up with the perfect solution. I’m really enjoying your build and look forward to what you decide.

    • @OtterCreek
      @OtterCreek Месяц назад

      Thanks Derek! Finding solutions on my own is one of my favorite part of the hobby. I've already built one of two dual gauge turnouts that will fix the routing of the standard gauge (I hope). I'll address the fascia when I'm ready. Shims seem the easiest solution.

  • @StephanWershoven
    @StephanWershoven Месяц назад

    if the dual gauge start to go downhill just after the timesaver could it duck under the narrow gauge before getting to the far side of hell gate? guess it would be close but you at least don't need room for double stack containers. have the narrow gauge on a embankment and the dual gauge in front with the terrain sloping down could look nice

    • @OtterCreek
      @OtterCreek Месяц назад

      That would be about a 4.5" drop of elevation in less than 8'. I don't think a 4.5% grade is a good idea. The whole staged train would mostly be on a grade, making uncoupling an adventure. Thanks Stephan, I'll work out what I'm going to do when I'm ready.

    • @StephanWershoven

    • @StephanWershoven
      @StephanWershoven Месяц назад

      @@OtterCreek just had another idea can the staging for the dual / standard gauge fit on the other side of the timesaver ? then you could model the dualgauge track towards hell gate as under construction would give a nice scene with some ties stacked up, some rail pieces ready and maybe construction of the tunnel started but only a few feet into the hill
