Forgotten Cameras
США
Добавлен 14 ноя 2017
Here I mainly show cameras that time forgot: those that are generally counted as 'obsolete' because of the smartphone and those that have fallen out of favor due to age and the fact that they "don't have a lot of megapixels". You may also find some how-to's and advice videos aimed at new photographers.
The Sony DSC-S85 Enthusiast Compact Camera from 2001: Is it Worth Seeking Out?
I wanted to give unscripted talking to a camera a shot, so much of this video will be a little long. I give a comprehensive overview of all of the controls and physical features, show what dealing with photos on a computer from the camera's era was like, and what kinds of results you can expect from it. Is it worth dealing with old-timey jank, or should it stay at Goodwill?

Vintage 28mm lenses versus newer Fuji glass! Clinical test comparison; what to expect (unscripted)
Просмотров 7 тыс.3 года назад
Thinking about buying some old manual vintage lenses? I've grabbed the modern Fujifilm 27mm f2.8 to compare it against a slew of vintage lenses from the 60's through the 90's. We'll look at a couple of clinical test shots to get an objective view and compare what to expect from these lenses, so you can decide if you like the quality they give, or if they're too old to be useful. I did this vide...
SD Quattro III: The Sigma 50-100 f1.8 A on the camera it was designed for. (Not Sigma Male Grindset)

The APS-C DSLR lens in its final form! When it came out, reviewers were wondering why Sigma would bother making such an overkill lens for crop sensors. I don't know if reviewers just don't do their research or what, because there ARE crop sensor cameras that actually take full advantage of a lens like this: Foveon cameras. It's really easy to find Sigma copy that pretty much states this, too. L...

Stop Already: Fujifilm 18-55mm vs 27mm; which is better? Checking San Francisco out with both!
Просмотров 54 тыс.3 года назад
Man, I see this question come up way too often: which should I get, the 27mm f2.8 pancake or the 18-55mm 'kit' lens? I took both lenses on a 12 hour walk to gather my thoughts on them, get in some killer shots of tall buildings to make some big prints, and ramble on about who each is for! Leave some comments with your thoughts and keep in mind that all of this is just my opinion and views. If y...
(9) Olympus FE-370: A Camera Doesn't Have to Have 500 Buttons to be Fun.
Просмотров 10 тыс.3 года назад
The FE-370 may be among the most forgettable of all pocket cameras, as there really isn't anything special about it. It exists in a sea of similar devices. But, does that in itself make it special? What if all of these similar devices...aren't so bad? Today we're going to take a look at this whatever camera that I, for some reason, took a big liking to. Thrift Store Haul June 2021 - Looking for cool cameras to review!

Instead of making a scripted video, I wanted to do something quick and dirty, showing off just how much you can find at thrift stores if you are into digital cameras. I needed some more to do videos on and found a ton! Some I've seen at thrift stores often but never picked up, others were more interesting. If you like this kind of video, let me know. Also, if you are into old or obscure cameras...
Sigma sd Quattro Part 2: Is it right for you? My thoughts of the camera after four years of use!

After seeing the response to my last sdQ video, I figured I should probably get the second part done pretty quickly. If you haven't seen the first part, watch that first, then this. Here I give my findings and opinions of the camera formed over the past 4 years. Is usability as bad as the reviews say? Maybe worse? I talk a lot of smack about my own camera while showing you the kinds of results ...
Canon S100: Is this compact camera still relevant in 2021? Detailed overview and review (feat. cats)

Compact digital cameras: they're not all toys only used by soccer moms and grandparents in the 2000's; they're actually really cool, fun, and often even useful! The S100 has a ton of great features and NOT a ton of useless ones most people won't use. But how good is it? How does it stand up today? Is it still a good value? Find out here! Finally, I take a look at my old-ish friend, the Sigma sd Quattro. What is this thing, anyway? What makes it special? Today we look at the Sigma sd Quattro, another camera that doesn't get the attention it deserves. It is really not for everyone and everything, and doesn't hide that in the slightest. Kodak Easyshare Z8612 IS Review - 8MP with Manual Controls for $2.

Kodak Easyshare is usually associated with pictures of grandparents and being found at Goodwill with a $2.99 sticker on it. BUT, Kodak made enthusiast models under the brand as well. This is one of them; how does it do? I was pleasantly surprised. Technical: All video shot with a Sony a65, Sigma 50mm f1.4 EX DG HSM, and Sigma 24mm f2.8 Macro Super Wide II (I think it's the II). The Sigma SD9 - A Foveon First (Also my first video ever!)

My overview/loose review of the Sigma SD9 OLD DSLR camera. Is it still a viable photographer's tool? Why in 2020? More info below! Today we look at the Sigma SD9, a camera with almost zero RUclips coverage. I’m not sure if you’ll see this but; how much work did you have to do post processing wise, of the images and how is its auto focus. I’m think if getting an SD9 and although not shy in playing with photos after the fact, I tend to like them turn out as they were shot.
The xd card is very expensive, I don't know how to transfer the photos to my cell phone
They haven't made the xD cards in years, so they are only going to get more expensive. To transfer to your phone, you'd either need an OTG cable and card reader or transfer to the computer and then to your phone using a USB cable. Don't know if any phones have the driver needed to read an xD card. For camera to computer to phone, might be easier to use a cloud service if you're on an iPhone. Android is just plug in and drag and drop.
Thanks for the video! I never thought about asking local animal shelters to take some nice photos of the animals. I originally clicked on this to take better photos of my cats as I am just starting in photography. Once I get more confidence in my photography, I definitely want to reach out to my local shelters.
Nicely put together video!
Is the dsc s50 any good in comparison? I like that it has a flip screen and i love this whole cameras deal
The Industar was hit and miss. Mine was good enough for what I use it for.
New things! I thought I don't dare to do that 🎉
Hey Nate, glad you're back. At one point your channel got hacked. I hope everything is well now. The moment I saw that your channel is uploading clickbait fortnite videos I wrote your mail-provider and made a case with youtube so they freeze the account. I don't know if it helped or if you even realised it. Anyways - Glad that we can enjoy your videos again. Greetings.
I found one on facebook marketplace for under 40 bucks I have an older Olympus small digital camera that works sometimes and other times it doesn’t work very well.
I have had 5 of these over the past 5 or 6 years. There are two very common problems with the P880 - (1) Fungus! The front element is actually two pieces and the fungus gets in between them. Despite keeping my studio humidity low two of my cameras had fungus within a year of getting them used. You never know how the cameras have been treated in the past if you buy used. (2) The power switch can get spastic and not power on or off at times, sometimes just random while using it. A shot of good contact cleaner under the switch and working the switch with the battery out is all that is needed sometimes. A few years ago I shot a P880 alongside an Oly E-500 (Kodak sensor). The similarities of the output were so extremely close it surprised a lot of people. So, it's closer to a DSLR than you might think!
superbness
Speaking of knowing what APS-C is and is not. Primarily it is not a crop sensor. But putting the wrong lens on a APS-C you end of losing some of the image. That is your fault not the sensor’s error. So go out and buy over priced lens and putting on a camera with a APS-C camera. I use Fujifilm X cameras and you can only use lenses designed for the X mount which uses APS-C sensors. In short APS-C sensors are not cropped only your lack of knowledge is.
tell me you don't know what you are talking about, without telling me you don't know what you are talking about. Lol
I have collected a few Vivitar 28 mm. But everyone says they are made by other manufactures. but none seem to look like yours. Cosina, tokina sigma
how do i transfer the pictures to my computer?
I have been on a bit of a Kodak buying spree, while older Canons and Nikons are getting more expensive, the Kodaks are still cheap. P712 was great also, P850 wasnt bad and can deliver nice results, Z812 and Z712 are cool also, I rather like the DX7590 too (5mp with a massive EVF and robust build), but the P880 is still my favourite!!!! TOP TIP when buying on ebay, many Kodaks are sold super cheap as "untested" because the seller has lost the battery and/or charger, all the P series and several DX cams use the same battery and charger and are interchangeable. Same with the Z series which use the 3.7v Klic 8000, I have never bought a Kodak untested that didnt work when I put a charged battery in it and some have cost under £10!!!! One of the great things about these old Kodaks (apart from the lovely image quaality) is that they all have an EVF viewfinder, sadly lacking on so many cameras now
I prefer the 24-105, f/4 Art as a lens that meets all of my need for landscape photography. A faster kens has never been a requirement because I usually shoot at f/8.
I have one of these right now, really sharp Zeiss optics
I just planed to help out a shelter for taking photos for practice for me 😊
I have the SD Quattro H and love it. While it might be fair to criticize this camera for all of it's shortcomings, of which there are many, the whole point of photography is the image. And this is where the Quattro really shines. My favorite lens for this camera is the Sigma 24-105 Art.
Reading and listening was pretty annoying and impossible with longer image descriptions, but damn, this vide is full of really great photos, you're a really good photographer! I rarely see a "review" with pictures this great
Very nice...I like your style and subscribed. By the way, I have both the 27 and the 18-55 and your assessment is spot on. Keep up the good work! RJ
I just brought one from eBay and found this video, what is the raw converter you use? I think it would be better to have noise reduction function
I just pulled mine out of the drawer. It’s spotless. I’m stoked to see how this rolls with my Fujifilm x100v. Will report back on old battery life.

What is the modified lens you put on it and why , please let us know
This is a lens adapter to allow wide angle and other lenses to be attached without the camera lens hitting them. Sony made them in Silver & Black as the Camera was sold in Silver or Black.
VAD-S70 is the adapter! I just looked it up myself haha.
Sigma's Foveon cameras are so appealing in some ways, but in other ways they seem horrible. The images can be gorgeous but there are so many compromises that make it a hard sell. I Hope Sigma makes a camera with this tech that is a bit less strange someday, because they really have something amazing on their hands.
I had an old copy of this lens i used on a Nikon D5600. The results were amazing and I often regret selling it when I moved to full frame. I’m a long time Foveon fan and recently picked up an SD Quattro, as soon as I saw this video I knew what I needed to do. The results are incredible, and monochrome….wow. Thank you
That was a great walk through :) Just grabbed one Waiting on it:) I love the ccd ship look Hope it still gives it a retro vibe I also like really trashy video I would of loved to see what the video looked like on this
hiii can you pls share how you got your photos off the camera? im so confused
I use a couple of replacement 'chili power' brand batteries. While I get the ' this is not a Sony battery ' warning ones in a while, I find that when I engage the half-press shutter right after turning the camera on, it will work just fine. Bought a - still sealed! - Agfa digital photo frame today with a Memory Stick port included. 🎉
The newer 27 with aperture ring and WR is even better.
Just got one of these, really digging it so far!
On the photoviewer in Windows 11, it does show the EXIF data in the (I)information menu. The image at 30:30 has color as I would expect from a Fuji Velvia or similar slide that was taken midday. One of the reasons these old cameras are getting a following is the color science in them was meant to be more film-like to entice people to switch to digital. With the AI-assisted resizing programs today, either in Photoshop & Lightroom or standalone like GigapixelAI, you can upsize these low MP images to some decent enlargements. But, most enthusiasts for these cameras will be probably showing most images on things like Instagram and such. I just picked one of these up at a local pawn shop for $18 just for grins. I used to do the same with cheap and toy cameras when I was shooting seriously with film "back in the day." To get back to the fun of it and play. It came with a Sony battery, charger, and a Kastar battery that yep. Fires up and then says, "Nope, you can't play with this one." Okay, I'm paraphrasing there. Thanks for showing some love for these old cameras and sharing them with the rest of us. Side note: Arnold looks so much like my cat, Nyxie. And I think we have the same printer. Obviously people of discerning tastes. LOL.
I have the Pentax SMC Takumar 28/3.5 (not the 2.8) and that is sharper across the frame (APS-C) than my copy of the Canon FDn 28/2.8 at all apertures. Might be a matter of QC, as you say, but I also heard that the f/3.5 Takumar wide angle primes are better than the f/2.8 versions.
Actually enjoyed this! Im 39 so i was a young whipper snapper during the age of these digicams! What printer is that you used at the end out of interest?
Glad I found this. I am a Co-founder/volunteer of a cat rescue and this certainly inspired me to practice more and hopefully get some cats adopted that have been in foster for some time.
You missed one fantastic point- which is why i still use this camera after over a decade. It has a screw mount which accepts OPTEKA brand adapter made specifically for the 8612. If you can find one- buy it! The adapter screws in perfectly and allows you to use any 58mm lens including macro, my favorite, and add polarizing lenses and other filters. It is a worthy and sturdy little camera which has lasted a LONG time. And while yes jpeg and 8 pixels are meh- it also has arty yum aspects. I won’t get rid of it and i paid full price New. Good review
Dude cut those talons on your fingers......yikes
Dang I just picked up this camera today and was looking forward to seeing more of your content. It looks like you haven’t posted in a while. I’m very curious about this camera I have a few questions, namely are you saying that it is impossible to use third-party batteries with it? Also, what kind of printer do you use?
Hi Donnie, I bought the same Sony S85 a couple of months ago. The original Sony battery was a bit tired... Decided to take the gamble and buy a couple of third party batteries. (Chili Power) While I get the warning that I do not use Sony batteries sometimes - and the camera shuts down automatically - I find that when I half press the shutter right after turning on the camera, it gives it something to do and I don't get the warning. Works just fine that way. Hope this helps you! Greetings from the Netherlands 🇳🇱 🤠 📸.
@@ericj.w.ruijssenaars3421 Holy shit! Vielen Dank! I've been holding back on buying a battery since I left that comment. It has been a shame because the camera is so good looking. Ordering some now. Thanks again!
@@donnietobasco4526 Hi Donnie, would be nice to hear if it worked for you too. 👍
@@ericj.w.ruijssenaars3421 I ordered an aftermarket battery from Kapstar and it came in two days ago. Interestingly enough I received no DRM screen or anything of the sort. There was no need to hold the shutter button at all. I think the Sony Lithium Ion splash screen still shows up. But the camera functions as if it had a Sony battery.
I always loved this camera back in the day and recently I have bought not one but two P880s on Ebay!!!! £20 and £22, both "untested" as they came with no charger, but I had one in the back of a drawer and both cameras work 100% fine. I still love this camera, personally I dont shoot RAW but I think the JPEGs look just great and the 24mm wide end is so good, still a good camera even in 2024, what a bargain !!
I have the Sigma version of that Quantary, the Sigma Super Wide II and it is an excellent lens with macro capabilites. I also have the Pentax lens but mine is the 28mm 3.5 which some say is a much better lens than the 28 2.8 . Mine is perfect wide open, although you loose an f stop, of course. By the way I use these lenses on a Fuji X-T2 along with a Canon nFD 50mm 1,4 (Really nice lens).
I have the same SMC Takumar 28/3.5 and I can confirm my copy is excellent.
Very good overview. I'll have to put my S100 to use again, especially in RAW mode.
How could you read the camera's memory because I've been looking for adapters for that type of memory and I can't find any
I found a USB card reader on Amazon that does CF, SD, MicroSD, and Memory Stick. It says SmartQ on top of it.
I found this camera at Goodwill 8 years ago and ever since I loved it. It takes really nice shots
It was good when it was new, and it is good now.
Getting a Quattro DP1 as a second camera. As much as the sd Quattro and the H sound nice, I already have a Fuji XH2, and with Fuji's already expensive ass lenses, I thought the best thing for me was to divert from the typical Fuji user buying an X100/XPro camera as a second camera and go with something way different.
I have a ZMax990. Which followed this one I still use it. Kodaks images have a look of their own.
Sorry to ask but what was that attachment on the lense?
A Sony Adapter Ring VAD-S70. It is made for an older camera, but that older camera has the same lens, so the part works. It lets you attach a filter or accessory lenses. It also protects the lens.
Hi, question about your recommendation at 5:33 for 85mm lens I have an APS-C camera (Sony ZV-E10), does this mean you would recommend an 85mm crop sensor lens (full frame equivalent of ~128mm)? Or does that mean you would recommend a 56mm lens (full frame equivalent of ~85mm)? Sorry if this was obvious, am new to photography and want to capture realistic pictures of my babies as memories 💞
Hello! If you're on a crop sensor, each has its own merits. The 85mm lens is going to give you more 'reach', meaning you'll be able to be further away with the noisy, clicky box thing. You'll also get better subject separation (background/foreground blur-effect). Your depth of field (how much is actually in focus) is going to be narrower, so you'll want to stop the lens down a little bit, if not quite a bit--more than you would for a person, because cats are smaller subjects. The 56mm is going to be easier to handle and less expensive, while still giving extremely good results. It will be easier to get sharp shots because you aren't as far away, so if your cat isn't so shy, I'd go with that. I recommend the Sigma 56mm f1.4 for people with Sony and Canon crop-sensor mirrorless cameras any time I am selling one at the store. It shouldn't be crazy expensive on the used market, either. Alternatively, there are about a million 50mm f1.4 lenses you can go with. You'll get about a 75mm FF field of view, and they are super easy to find.
Hi@@forgottencameras ! Thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed answer. My cat is super chill whether I'm close to her or further back (and luckily this camera has silent shutter), so reach isn't a concern. So between the 50 and the 85, which one would you say best portrays a cat's proportions most accurately/true to life (i.e. the least perspective distortion)? It seems those two were the ones recommended in your video, but I assume those were recommended based on a FF body. I appreciate you providing budget-friendly recommendations, but money is no object in this situation: I don't know how long left I have with her, so I'm just trying to get on camera the same beauty as I see through my own eyes (or as close as humanly possible) before she's gone. This is silly, but I'm paranoid about looking back at these photos and remembering her incorrectly as too fat or too skinny. Your video has some great inspiration in it and I've rewatched it multiple times already :)
@@ricemonsterr124 In that case, 85mm. When I do work that requires correct proportions, I shoot with a 70mm f2.8 macro, a lens designed for copy work. I actually use it for a lot, but it is really slow to focus. If money is no object, the Sony or Sigma 85mm f1.4 for e-mount is the rec. It is going to give true-to-life proportions, focus will be fast and accurate, and they are laser-sharp. Anything in the 70-90mm range is going to be proportionally accurate; going lower and you'll get some barrel distortion. With the 50mm, it is -almost- negligible when shooting people's faces (headshots). The nose might be a little exaggerated. In choosing an 85 for cats, keep in mind they are smaller than we are, so I would grab the one with the closest focusing distance. Also keep in mind that you're going to have to stop it down to f4 or f5.6 at least to get eyes, nose, and ears all in focus on a moderately close shot (moreso for a headshot), so if you end up with an 85mm f1.8, it's not a huge deal. ...which means lighting is going to be a big concern.
You are the Joe Pera of forgotten cameras.
Love my SD10
I loved this camera! It was nice and light. I could shove it into a bag and not worry too much about it. At the same time, I bought the Canon EOS 10D, which I loved as well. Between the two, I think I got more use out of the P880 because it was lighter and less awkward to tote around. I recently found my P880 hiding in a box with all of the accessories including the battery, charger, hood, cap and flash! I was never able to see photos from the P880 because of noise... so it was relegated to being the "fun" travel camera. The 10D was used for more serious use like larger prints, shooting commercially and creating photos for stock photography. but was a pain to carry around.
