    Olympus E1. 5MP I bought mine new back in the day, all photos i print off are converted to black and white in lap top as there is no feature in the camera for this. All are shot in raw on to cf card. I still use this as every day camera and it has never missed a beat and nothing has broken on the camera. I also think in my personal opinion that the 5 mp is enough for me

    Nice video, bud! It's funny that your review of this popped up right about the same time that this camera came back in my mind. I remember looking at it when it came out, but never could take the dive. My dad owned a photoshop and was fully invested in Canon cameras and lenses. I'm thinking about picking one of these up though, the foveon really does do some lovely things. Hope you keep up the good work!

    Well done, I enjoyed your review of the Sigma sd9, I have one but I don't use it, I know I should because I think it is the best of all Sigma camera's, I have sd14, sd1m, dp1 and dp2. the sd9 has enough pixels for on screen use no need to move around scrolling to see all the picture, it is sharp with great colour. The sd14 and other 14mp have green cast issues, the latest range of merrill cameras need too much computing power to edit because of massive file sizes, I only have core i3 6gig ram laptop its not up to the job. Just my view but I plan on dusting off and powering up my old sd9, it was a great camera though very power hungry so would need to be powered from a power pack.

    and this was my first dslr that i had. - and I fall in love with (almost married) than SD14, Dp1, Dp2m, SD1m.. all foveons. standard cmos are no match for X3 in my opinion in aspect of color fidelity micro-contrast and amount of "per pixel " detail.

  • @abstraconcept

    I have been fascinated with Foveon ever since I came across its Wikipedia article, and thought, "that's how I would want to make an image sensor". At least in theory, each pixel in your resulting PNG/TIFF/JPG can have a direct 1:1 mapping to a pixel on your X3 image sensor, with each RGB subpixel mapping directly to a subpixel layer.
    Quatro is a bit of a shame since it compromises that original idea, with one quarter of the red channel resolution, but my hope for it, and Sigma's new bayer-sensor camera, fp 1, is that it can bring in enough money to keep the Foveon technology alive.
    Though now indefinitely (in the literal sense) delayed, the upcoming full-frame Foveon camera was going to be a return to a full 1:1:1 subpixel resolution sensor; so it is reassuring to hear that Sigma does seem to have an interest in returning to that full subpixel sensor design.

    First of all, hi!
    I was looking for this kind of video description for so long.
    Your voice tone and speed fits well with the theme.
    Currently using a DP2 Merrill. Thinking of upgrading to quattro or the H version.
    That IR filter coming off so easy would add to my reason for buying it.
    Cheers from Romania.
    p.s. I'm getting close to 30k count with it and already the camera has a few error shots.

    Great seeing this tremendously underrated image maker having a fresh look in 2020. However, as far as I know the SD9 does not have a removable IR filter, it's only a dust protector. It only doubles as an IR filter from the SD10 and up.

    • @xpatusa821

      That is correct - the SD9 visible light filter a.k.a. UV/IR blocker is on the sensor.

    • @SMGJohn
      @SMGJohn 2 года назад

      Foveon is still 3 layer stack, its just they increased the red layer substantially, decreased the blue and the green remains the same if I remember.

    • @samgao
      @samgao 2 года назад

      @@SMGJohn are the other layers just less MP?

    • @SMGJohn
      @SMGJohn 2 года назад

      @@samgao
      Yes the newer Foveon X3 sensors have higher megapixel count for the first layer which is the blue layer, then green and red layers have less.
      Sigma Quattro H for example has 45 megapixels in total as Sigma says, the blue layer is 20 megapixels, green and red filters are 4,9 megapixels despite blue being the smallest of the bunch in terms of depth.
      This has to do with light wavelength, blue tends to travel shorter distances than red, hence the necessity to make blue as least obstructive as possible, while green is inbetween and then finally red the largest filter because red travels further duo to its longer waves.
      Shorter waves ? Faster but shorter distance
      Longer waves slower but longer distance.
      Megapixel count on Sigma cameras is an estimated megapixel, their actual sensor has different megapixel counts despite this.

    the result is really really good.
    cranking up resolution doesn't really mean a thing only if the quality of the sensor imaging capability is progressing, that is what matters.

    • @forgottencameras
      @forgottencameras  3 года назад +3

      Sensor resolution is still important in certain contexts; I wouldn't be able to use this in a commercial shoot nowadays, since most people expect 16MP+, especially for print. I've since upgraded to a 4k monitor to do photo editing on, and, since the resolution of the sd9's images is so low, they only take up a portion of the display at 100%. This can limit their usefulness (I won't be shooting any desktop pictures, for what it's worth), although for most internet things and printing up to about 13x19 (which most people will never do anyway), the sd9 would be fine. People have used 3MP and 6MP cameras to shoot murals, although that's usually more abstract stuff.
      Part of the reason the results are good is because of time spent with the images, rather than letting a computer do the work (shooting jpg). You can take something that would be terrible by today's standards (Nikon D40 instantly comes to mind) and do some amazing things with it in post if you keep in mind the camera's limitations while shooting and getting it right in camera, so you have the most latitude to work with in post. Then, it doesn't matter what the resolution is; it has more to do with your skill in your chosen software and your vision of the scene.

    Does this sensor produce the same freaky purple-cast images with old glass as my SD Quattro does do?

  • @shinya1215

    I'm interested in sigma x3 dslr too. Just seems shooting RAW is a must for these camera. Is the SOOC jpeg that bad? I'm now using a minolta 7d and S5 pro, the SOOC jpeg is fine to me most of the time.

    • @forgottencameras
      @forgottencameras  3 года назад +2

      In the SD9, there is no option for shooting jpg; the camera can't process the raw images to jpg.
      In my experience with other Foveon cameras, namely the dp2x and sd Quattro, the jpg output is okay, but kinda defeats the purpose of using a sensor like that and a couple of minutes of tweaking in SPP will give a significantly better result.
      But that's literally any other camera that provides a raw image. The computer in the camera is doing all it can to return everything in the image to as close to technically correct as possible, which makes the image usable, but not the most pleasing to the eye.
      I have always been interested in the S5 Pro; I LOVE the colors it produces! Fuji's Super CCD tech was awesome.

    • @shinya1215
      @shinya1215 3 года назад

      @@forgottencameras yeah, I just found that SOOC is a feature that only come with later models.
      For my S5, I have mixed feelings about it. The film simulation is really attracting for people like me just wanna a good coloring photo SOOC. But the metering in my S5 is really unstable, it always over/under exposure no matter how I change the metering modes. But when it get it right it’s good.
      The Minolta 7d for me is way more predictable and easy to adjust. The retro touch of color from the Minolta SOOC is also very impressive.

      @@shinya1215 if I would have to choose between s5pro and s3pro I would go for s3. If you have a chance, buy it. I bought all 3 of mine for more or less €50 or $60 per camera. For sooc images. It is much easier to use. Cameras that have more to fiddle around imho are obscuring the way to the nice picture. I bought the nikon d750 and wow, what a disappointment.. it sucks on colours hard. Colours are scraps of what old fuji can do. It is like beyond some level all shades and tones are just grey or darker towards black.

    Quattro are great cameras but their heft and size, slowness, AF is basically 1998 era style, mostly single point all its ever good for, ISO range of max 800 at best, the DP1 - 3 Merrill cameras are a lot more neat, they are smaller, pocketable almost, easier to carry and much more fun to use, yeah you would need to carry 3 of them versus one Quattro H and a 16-50mm lens, but the Merrills can be had for such low price these days its not a problem to buy 3 of them versus just one Quattro H.
