    Danny Richie of g.r. research was critical of Focal Partially because he found the tweeters in there towers to ring to much as well There response was a bit Lumpy according to the Graph that Danny Richle displayed..he Often Critical of the fact that San cast resistors get in the way of the signal path but that may not be the case here ?. There s probably better options out there at this point especially with the Likes brands from Jbls an KLipsch ..buyer be ware, The last time I heard some expensive towers remain nameles I was left unimpressed .Lusting instead for some Mini s from the Likes of jb ls an Boston Acoustics,//Never be Fooled by the name of any speaker manufacturer no matter what you read about them including g.r research. Ive heard a lots of speakers I can say majority of them I haven't liked but in the past 15 years I think maybe I'm Finally getting somewhere.I currently own about 7 pairs. a few brands worth picking up used are of course Jbls an Boston's as well as missions an older monitor audio as long as you have a way to tame wild tweeters of there.My music tastes run the whole gamut from prog rock to folk an a hell a lot of other stuff in between .Some of my favorite artists are Robert Wyatt an Richard Thompson as well as KIng Crimson .Please respond accordinglly Thanks!! .......Ps i m using older amp sfrom nad & Rotel to drive my speakers ,,,,I always keep my eyes pelled for harman kardoon there my personal fave...

In fact, I'm driving my Amp back to Broadheadsville, PA tomorrow to have it upgraded from a Sphinx V3 to their new Magnum edition. It will be in the backseat with its seatbelt on. I'll go back and get it in 2 weeks. I'm not shipping an Amp with tubes!

    Until recently, we have had a heat wave. The unit must have been in a very hot storage facility or very hot truck to cause those kinds of problems. A cautionary tale for sure, thanks for showing this, it is very educational. I have purchased one table that was shipped to me years ago and I guess I was lucky as it was fine.

      That is what I suspect as well. More likely a storage unit. But, again, people are buying them, looking at market prices, and flipping them for a profit without a care or, at least, any understanding. This is exactly why I continue to point these sort of situations out and I have a beauty of a one coming up shortly. Good video with excellent advice 👍🏻 Even though I'm an avid 2 channel stereo music lover, I also love the occasional movie, too, and due to lack of space, I have to optimise my setup for multi-channel listening also. However, when it came listening to my newly discovered multi-channel setup, I immediately became aware of how the room sounded different. Didn't know what it was at first, but coming from an audio black background, there was no way I was prepared to put up with it! Even after auditioning 3 separate AVR's, the same electrical ambient sound of the room was still present! That told me the extremely faint background signal noise I had been experiencing (poor description) had nothing to do with the actual units. Therefore, my attention changed to the cables. And even then It was only on the third occasion after I finally ended up purchasing shielded cables did the noise floor within my small room finally came down to satisfactory levels. Cables often act as antennas for attracting RF, and the longer the cable, the better the antenna. Probably explains why when I used to disconnect my heights and surrounds within 10 minutes, the faint background signal noise (RF/EMI) within my small room used to almost practically disappear/dissipate. The more cables I shield, the quieter my room becomes, and the better the shielding, the more the cables are likely to disappear. In fact, the last group of cables I changed were from my HDMI shielded chord clearway cables to the chord epic AOC (active optical cables) and lo and behold the high frequency interference I had been putting up had finally been extinguished. If one has the same sensitivities and is looking to address this matter, but is also hoping to notice (hear) the incremental differences, I would suggest starting with analogue cables before moving on to digital and power cables (no good getting rid of the quietest when one hasn't addressed the noisiest) Trying to achieve a totally silent room sadly has turned into obsession for me. However, the results speak for themselves. There are times when pressing pause (or mute) I'm unable to differentiate whether the systems on or whether the systems actually switched off. Of course, audiophile equipment helps, but in reality, for one to have a totally silent room, cables are where it's at. When friends or guests come over, I used to show them how loud the system goes. Nowadays, I prefer to press mute and show them how my quiet it goes None of them gets it, of course 😂

    Each of those components are introducing micro vibration to the other. Best to have each component sitting on sonething seperate, like having its own island. Better built stands curtail micro vibrations somewhat, but best to have the components on something seperate. Not just a subtle improvement. More like a world of difference.

    • @audibleeleganceinc
      @audibleeleganceinc 2 дня назад

      I agree completely however most people have neither the room nor the budget for such an approach. So, I shot for down the middle addressing some of the real basic issues. Years ago with Naim we used separate Sound Org tables but many people were put off by the number of separate tables. More advanced towers these days cost in excess of $2,000. Micro vibrations are one thing, the other is the use of steel chassis that spread magnetic fields all over the place. Aluminum is greatly preferred as it has no magnetic properties. That one is ignored by most manufacturers because people assume more weight means a better product. Pioneer use to add weights to the inside of the Cassette, DVD and CD players just to get the effect. Others did too.

    Weird about the insurance coverage. That‘s not the way our logistic companies can rule out transportation damages here in the E.U. One thing I know is that the logistic companies will not cover goods sent in their original package. You have to double package them. Rule of thumb is: If the outside package is dent or ripped, liability goes to the shipping company. If the outer package is intact but the product is damaged, well that‘s the shipper‘s fault. I always tell our customers that no matter how psyched they are to receive their products, if the outer package is damaged not to accept it. The package will then come back to us and we can make the logistic company liable for any damages to the product. Often, if you accept the damaged package, you may be stating that „it arrived in suitable condition“ and then nobody can help you if the product inside is damaged.

    • @audibleeleganceinc
      @audibleeleganceinc 6 дней назад

      I understand their position completely based upon the incredibly poor packing of goods I have seen over the years. 50 to 75 pound amplifiers dumped in a box with peanuts. You can imagine what that looked like. I had a customer bring in an Oracle turntable with packing equivalent to a paper bag. Needless to say, that turntable was totaled. And I have seen cases where I was left wondering if the product was not already dead and that they tried to pass its destruction off as a fault of the carrier when the unit itself was already trash. Sorry to say, this will find its way to the EU sooner or later.

    I’m very seriously considering what I sincerely hope is an audible performance improvement in my system in roughly the next 18 to 28 months. This change involves a theory I’ve observed in bi-amplification. I would like to use Conrad-Johnson’s ART 108-A valve amplifier to drive Midrange, and High frequencies, and my larger Crown amp for bass frequencies. This idea was observed listening to this C-J amp driving a rather fetching pair of Reference 3a Dulcet II Be units. That effortless delivery in strings, and vocals was both alluring, and intoxicating! (Your thoughts?)🌹✨

    • @audibleeleganceinc
      @audibleeleganceinc 7 дней назад

      OK, this is something that I use to run into in the 80s and 90s and it was not out of the ordinary. Personally, I am not a fan of such approaches but let me give you some tips. My preference is to use identical amplifiers. As I said, many have tried to use vacuum tube amplifiers for their tonal qualities in the midrange and upper frequency while using a solid state amplifier for the bass because of its damping factor and thus control. So, here we go: One, you need to make sure that the input sensitivity of each amplifier used is identical. If not, one will put out more power to the speakers disrupting the balanced designed for the speaker performance. Two, you need a preamp with twin outputs. If you don't have that, you do not use Y adapters at the preamp. Instead, you run one set of cables to one amplifier an at it's input, have a metal Y adapter and the cable to the second amplifier comes from the first amplifier. This is much better for the performance of the preamp. The real bugger here, if your preamp does not have two outputs is that it is not unusual for one type of cable to work best with one amplifier while another cable is preferable for the other amplifier. With a Y cable, that really doesn't work. In any event, it is going to take a lot of experimentation and patience to get the system musically right. Otherwise, all sorts of, well, interesting effects, are to be expected.

      Acknowledged… I have an Electronic Crossover with Balanced Ins, and Outs that I plan to set, using frequency spectrum analysis, an audio measurement setting on a rental digital oscilloscope. I, at this point wouldn’t expect miracles, but if get either 4, or 3 Hz at the closest to that prime point, it should still sound fairly excellent, as I’m certain it’s not really an exact process. As long as I can retain that overall smoothness I’ve always liked, I’ll be happy as a clam!🌹✨

    Most common issue in HiFi is when you add subwoofers and don´t know what you are doing, my guess... That could easily cause time/phase issues. I really don´t get the point as you mostly talk about getting the timing correct among musicians in a live performance. What has this to do in your system at home?! The room itself will probably create most issues, not the electronics... What am I missing? Cheers!

    The most difficult task is to chose between a liquid soundstage (+3-4 feet from the walls) and fulness/impact (closer to the walls). You cannot have it all... No matter what I do, my floor standers (28 hz -6dB), will not please me in the lower mids and bass area 3-4 feet from the walls, but they treat me with a beautiful soundstage. I just had to add subs to get to my preferences regarding realistic music re-production. My subs are located in front om my floor standers, quite close to me, to get them to blend in timing and to minimize room gain (distortion). A jerky setup only for dedicated rooms, but it pays... :)

      I am particularly fond of AudioTechnicas on Ittoks as, I believe, they made the moving magnet range for Linn. I have a Linn K18 MkII that came in on such a combination and it is truly wonderful. Long discontinued, I believe. You could also consider a Hana cartridge as we have had some nice results with those. No experience with Ortofons on an Ittok so you would have to ask around on that one. Depending upon where you are, as this is an international format, you might also look about for a Benz Micro Silver or the likes. Obviously, my advice has to be balanced against the version of the LP12 and the condition of the Ittok II tonearm. Sometimes spending a little money on new springs and grommets can prove to be most beneficial. Those grommets made of rubber do age. I also do not know if you have the original one side finished armboard or the the later ones that were laminated. So, an armboard upgrade would be valuable too. I have done a few videos on LP12s and you might want to look though those as well. So, that's the best I can suggest with the little information that I have.

My approach involves the integrity of the signal which can never be improved, only made worse. Think of it as a message being passed around though people in the game of telephone. It is amusing to hear the message at the end which had nothing to do with the original message. So it is with audio and video. The key is to make sure the signal is faithfully passed from one piece the next. So, if the first piece in the chain buggers the music, well, the best the next piece can do is faithfully reproduce a buggered sound. This is why so many people fault their speakers for what they hear when the error likely occurred well before them. Note this in the number of brands of speakers available but far less in electronics and even fewer for source components. You can also think of it as a photograph because once the lens is out of focus, nothing in the chain will fix that and the bigger the print (more accurate the speaker) the more dreadful it appears. I certainly do not encourage the constant rotation of equipment to find nirvana as nobody makes money selling their stuff as used. Many reviewers can talk about such mysticism but they don't pay for their equipment at all. Many are with Wizard behind the curtain in Oz and tantalizing tales keep you on the edge of your seat for the next installment that you will also need to buy. The best place to put speakers for optimum bass is in the CORNERS of the room with the backs of the speakers forming the base of a triangle in each corner. • @audibleeleganceinc
      @audibleeleganceinc 11 дней назад

      You simply fail to understand that speakers are fundamentally engineered to operate in three different positions forming either a full plane, half plane or quarter plane. Your suggestion for every speaker simply fails to understand how any speaker has been engineered to perform "flat" in the position they have chosen. So, your suggestion is fine for heritage or vintage Klipsch speakers because he designed them to use the corners as a horn for the bass performance. Putting all speakers in the corners will certainly result in a lot of bass and a real sonic mess. Half plane speakers will have 2X the bass and full plane speakers 4X, not to mention nearly every other aspect of the speaker design will sound like crap. Your suggestion is suitable if you want car stereo sound in your home. No thanks.

    I see three different approachces to unpredictable chaotic interactions . First is to consider that we have ideal speaker and we have not ideal room - then right approach is to adopt room so that room also will be ideal - in reality it would mean total damping with room treatment and bass traps. But we need to remember - our speaker must be also ideal . . . 2nd is to consider that we have resonating speaker in resonating room - in 99% it is always the case . Then we may set speaker in place where resonances of room and speaker compensate for listener positioned sitting in chair and we are stuck permanently to this positions . 3rd way is to use speaker acoustic matching room resonances in a way that it's own properties already compensate room resonances - it extends match of line source amplifier spaeker to room which makes it 4 times more confusing. . In reality it means that we deliberatly limit low range of speaker so that resonance of room endorses speaker lowest range with room's lowest reaonance . - in third situation placement of speakers and listening position could be much less important and only affecting impressions in upper band. ( 4th would be ideal room and not good speakers which would remind playng bad system in open air - this is not interesting for audipphiles). 3rd case sometime but rarely may be observed when listening to old traditional big radio in well designed open wooden enclusure size say 80 cm x 50 cam in realtively small room size 7 sq meters. These speakers in average room do not even present low range, but in such resonating room can push whole room space. and what's more do not overlay rest.

    • @audibleeleganceinc
      @audibleeleganceinc 11 дней назад

      Well, you have gone about explaining things differently and in more detail. Rarely is there a perfect room or a "perfect" speaker (I don't think either exists in the real world for 99% of users.) so it is a matter of finding the best results for the listener or listeners after trying what the manufacturer suggests as the best position. Each room is so different not only in shape but also what is already in it. People live in rooms and rarely is there a cave for music. I've seen far more dedicated rooms for theater, for example, than for music.

    I've heard of that technique (put the speaker in the listening position) with subwoofers, but not full range speakers. Would you use a single speaker in this case? I ran the second (Linn) exercise earlier this year. I have a small room and bass is always an issue... there just doesn't seem to be enough room for the longer waves to form before they reflect back. So I started walking around the room one day and found that one of the corners had a massive build up of bass. I flipped the room and the issue moved to the other corner (two of the corners in this room have doors that open into them and I suspect a lot of sound escapes there). So I rotated the setup 90 degrees to the long wall and the corners cleaned up considerably. I suspect the standing waves might be building up in the open closet behind me but I can't hear them so this setup seems to be best. The room doesn't sound dramatically better but I do think there's an improvement in overall soundstage. Maybe there's less phase cancelation now?

    As always Lou... (it's getting to the point that this is a given) but, excellent thoughts as per usual. I'm going to go with "door #2" and endorse Jeff's contributions. Yes sir, room acoustics and speaker positioning are where we really find the critical mass. I've learned over time that despite all, or most of our focus on components, the room is component #1! I'd also like to endorse The Wilson Audio, WASP method, Wilson Audio Set-up Procedure. Seems to me that there is some degree of 'universality' about getting speakers placed the correct distance from the front and side walls; that somewhere within that range one can find the best spot. Otherwise, there is so much variation-variables between the components and the room that one just has to go through the process. That's my experience and it works. I've found the biggest issue might be mostly related to that "bass resonance" you started this video with. Is that another "universal"? I don't know for sure but, there's something about those front wall-corners that interact differently with a variety of speakers. I'm a fan of "towers" - just because there's use of the cabinet somewhat like a pipe organ using the resonance of large wooden chambers. But in that regard, I only have luck (or good fortune) with towers that do not have a rear-firing port. My room does not like! Lastly, just one question for you about your room. How about you do something about those windows?

      Ah, the window, the windows, the windows. Unfortunately, Audible Elegance is located in a historic district and the ability to change anything, including the color of the building is nearly impossible. Changing out the windows would get shut down immediately. So, I have learned how to play the room as a benefit and not as a problem. A lot of manufacturers don't know how to play a room which is why many of their demonstrations at shows sound pretty awful and, by the way, Wilson Audio pulled one of those as well at a Rocky Mountain Audiofest. @@AndrewDelman My concern, Andrew, is the height of the cartridge would result in an improper VTA. If you look at a tonearm on a record, the arm should be parallel to the record itself. The taller the cartridge, the greater the risk that the arm will look like it is sloping back towards the gimble assembly. That will throw both timing and tonality off. The AudioTechnica were a common cartridge when that table was made and often times came standard on the Technics tables. That's why I suggested it. The Ortofon is a fine cartridge but you would need to do some homework to make sure it fits properly.

  • @danielgeiger7739
    @danielgeiger7739 16 дней назад

    Agree to a decent degree that timing in music is important. However, perfect timing is lifeless. The term for tempo variation is rubato (or rubber time as my teacher called it). Excellent musicians are not always perfectly on the beat, but occasionally anticipate it, occasionally let it pass. That is referred to as "playing the music" as opposed to "playing the notes". Critical difference. You hear that particularly in baroque chamber music when performed by top artists (e.g. Tafelmusik orchestra). Similar with pitch, e.g., trills are played a tad sharp. With respect to audio system timing (PRAT, I assume), I very much doubt that is a factor, assuming a decent recording being played. Human threshold in time domain is ~30 ms, which is an eternity in electronics working at the speed of light. In a car, you are about 2ft from the speakers, and at 1 ms/ft sound propagation, you will not get to 30 ms. Rather consider frequency response of speakers and interaction with interior at the source of listening fatigue. my 2c. Even with TTs, audible frequency changes (3 cents for me with pretty decent relative pitch coming from violin/viola/viola d'amore playing) are at about 0.4% speed variation, while wow/flutter is typically <0.1% so well below threshold of hearing. I venture to guess that 30 ms in time domain are equally a non-issue on a TT.
