Duck and Goose Hunting the River | DIY Waterfowl Trip - Day 1
Duck Hunting Rivers are my type of waterfowl hunt. Add some giant geese that do it right over a water spread and now you really have something. There is somethign amazing about motoring up the river in the dark, the steam rolling off the water, and the sound of mallards flushing off the roost.
This was the first morning of a four-day out-of-state freelance duck hunting trip. As usual, we used the first morning to hunt/scout and the rest of the first day to scout and line out hunts for the rest of our trip. Despite going up the river blind in the morning we were still able to scratch off a few geese and some mallards.
After this hunt we split up and scouted which led to us finding a massive...

INSANE Field Duck Hunt in SIDEWAYS RAIN | DIY Waterfowl Trip - Day 4

    HI Holtz Outdoors, would you believe that while before I had typed my recent comment, I had just checked with Colorado Parks in Denver and those folks swore it was 100% always illegal to use thermals for ANYTHING, ANYTIME in Colorado. But then after I typed my recent comment, I checked with the Colorado Springs Parks and Wildlife office and the Gent there told me it was most certainly legal to use night vision or thermals 24 hours a day in Colorado on Private Land with Landowner permission to take Coyotes provided the Landowner viewed the Coyotes as nuisance animals and wanted them gone. He also told me that thermals could be used for other species that are not nuisance animals or furbearers on public land during normal daylight hunting hours, night vision too, but during daytime of course that would be useless.. Then he said, but the scope can't have a processor. I shared with him that you can't hardly purchase a scope without a processor, for even if it only has a lighted reticle, I guarantee that it has at least a midget processor controlling the lighting for the reticle, he did not have a response for that, but he was a very nice fellow. How are you addressing this potential Smart Rifle Scenario? Looks like a mess to me, two features he specifically stated that were an issue are video recording and a ballistics computer built in. The Colorado Wildlife department is definitely living like it is still "1999".

    • @HoltzOutdoors
      @HoltzOutdoors 2 месяца назад

      @@Brad-q7b it’s confusing I know I am doing nothing to change the law but I do understand how it’s written really well because you need to in order to hunt. Look up difference between ballistics calculator and computer at least here in Colorado that is where they draw the line when it comes to smart scopes

  • @Brad-q7b
    @Brad-q7b 2 месяца назад

    It is completely legal on Private Land with Land Owner Permission via Colorado Statutes C.R.S. 33-6-127 and C.R.S. 33-6-107, but apparently a lot of the folks at Colorado Parks seem unable to read the law, and make up their own laws, because you can still be cited by a Barney Fife Game Warden that is ignorant of the law and believes it to be illegal.

    First off, congrats on getting a public land mature buck. You went where, sounds like, others will not. I think you won't even go back there a second time. You put in a ton of effort to get into position and you didn't give up until you got to where you said you would. Wonderful. But, no extra effort to get into an ethical shooting distance? Yes, we (us mountain hunters) practice for the long shots, reload bullets to do it, and build guns that are capable. It's all done to make the closer shots easy. Not to fling led out to 700 yards where a 1 MOA gun has a 7" group in perfect scenario. Cold bore. To me, it looked like you could have shaved off a few hundred yards on that deer. I'm not trying to beat you up or publicly shame you, I'm expressing my disapproval for this new wave where hunters (including old man Randy) feel like flinging lead that far is perfectly ok and everyone should do it. Outsmarting your prey to get in close isn't a skill anymore. Again, congrats on going through the "hell hole" with a great buck on your back. Cue the hateful replies from the "distance shooters" now..........

      @@FrontierOutdoorsman thanks for the constructive comment! I mention it in the video but he had me pinned down and was bedded in The perfect spot. I couldn’t get closer but I wanted to. I shot out past 1k at least two sessions per month but my absolute energy limit (1k fps) on animals is around 700 yards. Prior to this my furthest shot on an animal was 450 but I didn’t really have any in their option I had plenty of time and a solid rest and felt comfortable so I sent it. Luckily that second one landed right on the shoulder (heart) and he expired immediately. Boy are you right on the long distance haters 😂

      After looking at it zoomed in and in slomo about 1000times I think it was actually off the front shoulder and down the side of the body. Doesn’t matter in the end… I didn’t recover it until the next season when my buddy found its deadhead about 1/4 mile away.

      Depends on the scout but as the flocks build later in the year we toss bigger spreads. I would say or standard spread is 12 dozen
