SURFING MYSTICAL LEFTS ON VANCOUVER ISLAND, CANADA
This session we went on a mission to find a few tasty lefts somewhere on Vancouver Island. This summer's been particularly fickle and we've all been yearning for the return of some real power in the swells, but every now and then things have aligned for some special little unexpected days like this one.

SURFING HIDDEN WAVES DEEP IN CANADA'S RAINFOREST
Просмотров 4,4 тыс.Месяц назад
In this episode we set out in search of secluded waves hidden deep in the rainforest of Vancouver Island, Canada. Embarking from a remote location in the wilderness we follow a gnarly overgrown trail through pristine and ancient old growth rain forest, crossing bogs and streams on fallen log bridges before finally arriving at our destination: A fun rippable little wedge wave breaking in the mid...

Gold!
Looks refreshing
Common pro? Even for Canada that’s average
I’m going to have to respectfully disagree with your comment. Did you even look up the surfer? They are indeed a professional, meaning that surfing is their paid profession. I’d encourage you to do some more research.
7:13 what kind of fish was l That, left corner of screen!!!???
I took a really close look at that moment and I didn’t see anything. It could have just been some turbulence from my hands when I was situating myself before I started paddling?
Surfing.......it's the right thing to do. Good stuff, thanks fer sharin'
Thank you for sharing the stoke! 🌊❤️🤙
People, this is called real commitment…
Yackity Yak, Hack Hack Hack!
Never seen that wave so open, incredible🔥🔥🔥
So sick to see you ride, definetly taking notes! you rip
Thanks so much brother! It means the world! Can't wait to share a session with ya one of these days. 🌊🙏
Sick vid 🌊 Found your channel a while back and now I’ve watched all your stuff, so cool seeing content from someone surfing at the spots I know !You work at LLBS rigjt? Hopefully I’ll get the chance to meet you sometime 🤙
Much appreciated. It truly means the world to be able to share the stoke! And yes I usually work at Long Beach Surf Shop, but will be taking some time off from the shop soon to focus on some top secret projects in the works. Shoot me a message on instagram if you're ever headed this way. Always stoked to link up! ♥🤘
@@tofinosurfphotographysickkkkkk! Don’t know if ur still living at the beach from some of your other videos but if you are, then I think we’re neighbours haha
🥳😙
🌊🐳🦦🐻🌶🐍
Love the intro 🤙
Thank you! I've been getting a lot more comfortable these days with looking like a wierdo talking to my camera haha! 😅🤳
That wave was pumping when I was there early spring. It was never a good wave years ago. Just short rides. Now it’s so fun.
Stoked to hear you got it good! All the waves are so fickle out here and it takes so much patience and luck to get it on the right day! 🙏🏖🗺
Awesome except they thinks its okay to shit in my front yard.
Yaaaaa! Sick one! I'm sneaking one in with ya one of these days! I swear! Your content is getting better and better brotha so fun to watch the progression. Proud to call you my friend! 🤘🤘
Thank you so much brother! Your kind words and stoke mean the world! I'm still reminiscing of some of those epic winter sessions we shared years ago, can't wait to link up again for another session soon! Much Love! ♥🌊🙏🔥🌮🥡
K
I always say, it's only spooky during the lulls. I used to have some spots on Kauai that were empty 90% of the time. Seen tigers a few times. But when it's pumping, you don't think about it.
Haha very true! I've had that same feeling surfing both in Hawaii and here in the Pacific Northwest. Luckily we've never had any incidents with sharks in the lineups here other than the occasional salmon shark sighting and they aren't dangerous to humans, but the big ones are out there in the deeper waters for sure. 😬🙈
So sick!!!!!
Thank you! 🙏🌊
Full respect. I spent years surfing uncrowded waves on the Island of Cyprus on the easter reaches of the Mediterranean Sea. There were 6 of us and the occasional traveling surfer would pass through. I spent more days surfing with my shadow than anyone else. Israel, less than a 20 minutes flight from Cyprus, was always packed in the water with heavy egos and to be honest, shitty attitudes. For us on Cyprus, we had it all to ourselves. I spent on average 148 days a year in the water there for almost 13 years until the word got and then the vibe went to shit. Left in 2013 and came back to Vancouver Island. Treasure your secret spots.
Wow, thanks for sharing your experience! It must have been amazing to be surfing those spots in the early days when there were only a handful of other people. It seems in our ever evolving world whether it's in surfing or in other aspects of life, solitude is something that always keeps us searching and having to stay one step ahead as the world changes around us. ❤️🌊
@tofinosurfphotography Honestly, the best surf years of my life. I kept a detailed surf log that spanned 13 years. Moon cycle, water temperature wave direction, period, and more. It became my almanac. 13 coptic gails of that region that were based on ancient Arabic maritime charts. You could set your clock plus or minus 72 hours off the given date. I remember when the surf was relatively uncrowded here on south Vancouver island.
froooggsssssss
🐸🥰
The hike/bushwhack reminds me of the days before I took up surfing. I used to bushwhack and do obscure peakbagging where I hit terrain similar to this. Looks cool to hike there. Great video!
That's awesome, no shortage of peaks out here that's for sure! Glad it brought back some good memories! 🌊🏔️
Sick video Keenan and the waves were glassy and fun! It was definitely worth hiking through the dense rainforest jungle in order to score those waves with no one around🙌
Thank you brother! Glad you enjoyed it. It was nice to have the opportunity to make a video that was more challenging and adventure oriented this time! 🙏🌲🌊🏔️
so sick man !!!!
Thank you! 🌊❤️🤙
Magic place! Is STOKED
Cheers brother! The stoke is high! 🙏🚀🌊
@@tofinosurfphotography 💙🤙🤙
What is the plan if you get hurt out there? Sick video bro
Thanks so much bro! You've been dropping some killer videos yourself lately! Both of us are experienced in first aid and usually I carry a small first aid kit in my backpack for minor stuff like sprains or cuts, as well as a device to send out an emergency call if a situation did arise.
@@tofinosurfphotography thanks man! 🤙 that spot looks magic. Is it sharky at all? I’ve been surfing with a tourniquet recently if I’m alone in the water
It's not sharky here but they definitely do cruise around farther offshore. For some reason they've never really been known to come close enough to the beaches to be an issue for surfers. It's admirable that you bring a tourniquet with you and could make a huge difference if a situation ever arose. How do you carry it on while you're surfing?
@@tofinosurfphotography I have shorts with a big zipper pocket haha. I can bring sunscreen too
I gotta say embarrassingly I'm so stuck in the cold water mindset I forgot all about boardshorts with pockets lol. We need wetsuit pockets, the little ones they put on the legs for keys are useless and you can't even fit any snacks in it haha. This year I saw a surf photographer in Nicaragua who was drinking water from a collapsible water bottle mid session. He had it fastened to his waist somehow and I thought that was pretty genius.
Always thought about bring my board in there before. Never thought it was worth it.
Great video bro
Thank you! ❤️🌊
I’ve always wanted to hike down there with a board, but I’m always too scared it’ll be flat 😂 That was great man! Thanks for sharing! 🤙🏽 What was the tide and nearby swell that day if I may ask 😅
I would also love to know where this is, can someone tell me?
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it! I never reveal information on sensitive spots, especially in social media comments. Call me old fashioned but I prefer to let people put in the hard work and time to figure it out for themselves. It's like a rite of passage if you want to score waves off the beaten path.
I truly appreciate your stoke and desire but I don't allow people to post public comments about any sensitive or remote spots on my channel. It's all part of surfing to network and chat about spots among close friends, but public comment sections and group chats are just not the right place for that kind of discussion. 🙏
Yea sorry dude! Rule # 1, never reveal the spot 😂
Great vid ! Yewwwwwww
Much appreciated! 🤙🌊❤️
Kate yelling "oh sorry!" to that frog- omg bless her heart ❤ Ps. Forest goes super quiet when there are predators around- could be you, also- could be something else, always beware!
So true! That's why I always try to hike with a buddy out here. From bears to cougars to sasquatches you never know what's out there. 😉🐻
@@tofinosurfphotography I'm gonna have to ask you in person which trail this is.. I have a couple guesses!
looking like Mason Ho out there with all the rocks
Haha thank you! 🙏💙
Would have never thought to surf here, sick video dude. Must’ve sucked to do that hike with a board though, haha.
Much appreciated! Having a board definitely makes it a cumbersome mission to say the least haha.
Keep up the good work bro - miss surfing Tofino - would like to see some beach filming but know it's hard to get filmers 😂
Thanks so much for the support! It means a lot! One day I'll hopefully have a budget to have a filmer shoot from land to mix up the angles. It would go a long way! 🙏🌊
@@tofinosurfphotography sweet bro look forward to the next one yeww

Congratulations on 2K subs. Your videos rock!! This video is awesome as well!!
Thanks so much for the support!! 🤘♥🙏
@@tofinosurfphotography Always Legend!! Keep crushing it out there!!
Just got to make the parking lot bigger now!
I can appreciate that when it's busy and hard to find parking, but also I kinda like the way it is now so that the beach doesn't lose it's sweet vibe to overcrowding.
Awesome to point out the rip Keenan, hopefully this will prevent some mishaps. Whats is also dangerous is all the peeps paddling back out directly through the takeoff area(and not just nubes or visitors, lol) GO AROUND....and people that back-paddle around you to snake position in your spot you've been patiently waiting after they just got one in the last set that came to them 100 feet down ...and longboarders that sit right in front of you no matter how much you move...take off outside on every set paddle back out fast and take the next set, repeat. Such fun conditions the last couple weeks, but etiquette seems to have taken a back seat lately.
Thank you! I agree that sometimes there can be issues with etiquette, but I always try to consider all the different factors that affect it, especially out here. The popularity of surfing in Canada is still somewhat new, and with more new surfers in the water than ever before it's understandable that some folks out there aren't familiar with all the rules. One of the biggest challenges I've noticed with etiquette and priority out here specifically is the unpredictable nature of the peaks on our beachies and how they can shift around a lot. It can leave a lot of grey area when it comes to deciding who has priority during a session with waves breaking all over the place, some people sitting farther outside, some inside, on all different types of surf craft and ability levels. There are so many factors that come into play and although it can be frustrating I'm not really sure if there's any solution other than to surf bigger waves, seek out uncrowded times and peaks and wake up hella early haha! 😅🙏🌊✌
@@tofinosurfphotography yeah so true re migrating peaks, bigger days do thin the crowd...and all things considered the vibe in our waters is usually super chill and fun, other than the odd bozo. Haha.
Would love to see the resulting photographs!!
Tonight was epic!!!!! Love for Lovekin!!!!!
I'm so grateful you're taking the time to put this warning out there for the public Keenan. I know we've been advocating for there to be a reinstatement of lifeguards here for years, unfortunately between the federal parks and local gov no seems to think it's in their jurisdiction to afford it. I think it's rad you put this message out, these are avoidable losses and costly rescues being done. Probs buddy 🤙🏼
Thank you for your kind words and for helping to spread the message to advocate for lifeguards. Though the progress and response from the government has so far been disappointing, I believe that every bit of public discourse on this topic, from the petitions brought to parliament in the last few years down to every post, video and comments like these contribute to raising awareness and creating and a positive impact. ♥🌊🙏
Great video. I saw a beginner surfer getting dragged away by the rip current around Lovekin Rock. Person was panicking and luckily was rescued by other surfers around.
Much appreciated, and thank you for sharing your story. So many incidents like that happen, many going unreported and it is so lucky in that case there were other surfers in the water capable of helping to rescue the person. Hopefully with more awareness and education we can create a safer environment to prevent these kinds of situations and ultimately convince the government to approve the funding to reinstate the lifeguard program. 🙏💙
Looks pretty fun 🤩
Thanks bro! It's been kind of a slow summer for swell so it was a treat to have some real waves again! 🙏🌊☀️
Does not look fun to me. All that work for 3s surf before the wave breaks. Are the waves in Tofino always so quickly done?
The conditions can change dramatically from day to day and if you check out some of my other videos there are lots of days with longer rides.
@@tofinosurfphotography I see. Thanks, I will check it out.
