How to Produce a Photoshoot From Start to Finish: Post-Production (Part 4 of 4)
Hello. I find this video to be very convincing. I am currently majoring in business specializing in digital marketing. I wanted to become a grpahic designer but I have to attend school online due to circumstances. The available colleges around my area that offer graphic design BA fully online are all for profit, private universities. I don't think I can easily afford the programs there. I had a college career advisor who told me that I can still become a graphic designer with just a business/marketing bachelor's degree. All that matters is having software design skills and very good interpersonal skills. She suggested that I can take graphic design certs from the college or Adobe. I am concerned about my future. I originally looked for degrees and careers based on money. Now I learned my lesson and looked for careers based on my passion. I think that passion is much more important than money. What do you think about all this?
Good review on preflighting .
Love this video. Thanks for sharing! Omg that bad boss story was wild... at least you lived to tell the tale!
Thank you so much for this video and all the expertise information, super helpful and informing! Keep it up
You git a sub! great explanation Tirso
How to make a standard 36 page comic book. The most easiest way to do this is: make the book cover first. Then until image #18 on the left side of the comic book put the images in order in zig-zag format from images 34 to 18 On the other side you put the final images going from 33 to 19 Step 1) Open PowerPoint and go to design , then slide size, and choose A3, then select ensure fit and landscape on both Step 2) Get your page images ready and use this. REMEMBER: RIGHT SIDE IS THE BACK COVER AND LEFT SIDE IS THE FRONT COVER Covers: 36-1 2-35 The right side until image 18 is in reverse. Page 34 is the comic book ending. Page 3 is the beginning of the comic book. Pages for the comic: 34-3 4-33 32-5 6-31 30-7 8-29 28-9 10-27 26-11 12-25 24-13 14-23 22-15 16-21 20-17 18-19 You need to have 18 slides in total. This is roughly 9 sheets of A3 paper.
I was trying to understand what could have happened and I should probably do a follow up video or reupload to clarify this. What I was explaining in the video was how offset printers set up their pages. It sounds like you are printing on a regular printer which the file setup is what you listed above. I apologize for the confusion…
I used this video to make a booklet comic book and yet when I finished printing it I realized I completely messed up my PDF ordering so now 4 pages are the other way around 🤣. Guess I'll have to redo those pages again.
Should I always convert all images to CMYK? What is the difference when I print some RGB images. We've been getting a ton of clients who only have JPEG and Canva files
A lot of clients going the canvas route are likely not investing in designers who know the print production process, so that can be challenging; but you should still convert for proper practice. The difference is the processing. RGB is brighter because it’s backlit. CMYI tends to be duller. For some images in particular if there’s neon, by changing to CMYK you can see if there are any adjustments that need to be made, which will prevent any “surprises” after printing.
thank you sp much bro
You got it bro. Thanks for watching!
A great video!
Thanks so much! 🙏
Please continue this series man I love this ❤
Thank you for commenting. I’m picking it up again and will finish!
@ thanks alot sir
This was a terrific tutorial! Thank you so much! How did you make the separator for the 6 column layout? Can you do that directly within indesign?
Thank you! Yes, I did it in InDesign. I have an illustrator file with the lines, and then I just placed it inside of a rectangle. This gives some flexibility to control the scale of the lines inside the box
Excellent video! Thanks Tirso.
Thank you Jason! 🙏❤️
As Always, very well put together and full of practical wisdom. Looking forward to your next video on other types of columns and gestalt principals mentioned in this video.
I’m working on the Gestalt principles next! I’m not sure why I haven’t done that yet, but I think it’ll be helpful for everyone. Thanks so much for watching!
Valuable content!
Thanks so much for watching Harry! 🙏
I really like it when you do grid related design videos! Very informative and inspiring! Thanks for this one. I need to save this!!! 😃🥰
As always thanks for the support. I think I finally found a nice structure for the grid videos, which makes them a little easier to produce. For sure save it, it’s always here for reference
Man Tirso I love your content. I can tell you’re a person that takes pride in your work and morals. Thank you for sharing your professional insight with us. I’m claiming you as my virtual unofficial mentor ❤

How bittersweet, but such an amazing story and so many accomplishment during your time in nyc ans on youtube! Love this video so much!!! 🎉
Thank you! I'll be back, but I'll let the world tell me when
Interesting! Love the information, this is great🙌🏽
This so amazing Tirso. I totally feel the same way. Thank you so much for sharing. :)
We're all in this together ❤️
So good to see you and catch up!
So helpful, thank you :D
Of course! Thanks so much for watching 🙏
Thank you for the tutorial. I have a question, if we can only work from indesign, what is the best way to transfer your vector design from illustrator to indesign?
It depends how complicated the vector is. If it’s simple, you can copy from Illustrator and paste directly into InDesign. This will allow you to change color and some easy alterations directly in InDesign. If the illustration is more complex, make sure the color profile in Illustrator is in CMYK, and then place the Illustrator file in InDesign (Command + D, then choose your file). With this method, in your links panel, you can right click (Control + Click) and go to Edit in Illustrator, which will allow you to make changes and when you save, it will update in InDesign, just make sure you don’t have the yellow triangle in the links panel, that means the file has been updated and you can update it by clicking the circle with two arrows in bottom right of the links panel or in the dropdown, there’s an option for “update all links” … I promise this is much easier and faster than it took me to type to all out. hope this helps!
Thank you so much! I will try this then
I'm noticing interviewers booking and leaving less and less time for a portfolio showing in Virtual meetings, what do you recommend doing or how to approach it easily knowing what to cut and what not to cut when speaking?
Yes, this tends to happen. I suggesting taking control of the conversation. When it's time to present, you can simply say that you have 5 projects prepared to present and then ask how many projects they have time for. I would imagine at least a minimum of three. For me, it's hard to judge a designer based off of only two projects (red flag!). If they only have time for 3 or 4, that reinforces the use of the PDF because you can easily shift the pages without messing up the presentation. This is also a reason to prepare in advance. You want to be able to present your strongest points for each project first. In the situations you have less time to present, make sure that you get through those talking points.
Wonderful! Thank you.
what software do you use?
I use InDesign
Really useful, as are all your videos!
Thank you so much for watching and the support! ☺️🙏
Great content. But it's like listening to an interesting subject while stuck in an elevator. Turn the dreary music off.
Keep posting brother learn lot of from this video ❤
I'm trying. Life's tough lately 👀
do you know of any online courses i can take to print production? more specifically pre press preparation is what im most interested in...
I haven't looked into this, so it'd hard for me to confidently recommend one. I would imagine you can fine a more robust class on Skillshare. A lot of the learning will come from designing for print and working directly with a printer. Like I said in the video, we barely paid attention to production in design school. I did a lot of learning on job throughout the years.
I want to ask about justifying alignment of text. I see you don't do it here but it's preferred in some print media. Can you make a video or elaborate on the use of justify alignment?
Yes! I can work on this. I will say, justified text is very specific. It's often used in newspapers. There's a lot of typesetting that needs to be done. There's a also a lot of readability issues that are hard to avoid. So if the project doesn't require it, I don't often recommend.
Elementary graphic design question. Help me explain why indesign is used for layout over illustrator. I ask because a new designer (former freelancer) refuses to use indesign. Their response is illustrator can do the same thing and they are more proficient at using illustrator.
I understand your frustration because I’ve had this conversation many times with designers. I do have a strong opinion on this and it's often one people don't want to hear... Hoping this isn't too harsh, but it's the most honest and direct response to this situation. Illustrator is a vector-based app, so it's not meant to process images because you can't check resolution. An illustrator file is also unusable for print because you can't preflight. It’s also not great for interaction design because it’s so much work to keep the screens consistent. It’s really only good for illustrators. When it comes to print projects, InDesign isn’t optional. It is the industry standard and there isn't a good enough reason not to use it. For any designer that pushes back on this, they're really limiting their opportunities to grow and, for me, it’s only an acknowledgment that they don’t know what they’re doing. It's the job and if they can't do the job, you could definitely hire someone else that can. I'm certainly not suggesting that you should let them go. It just poses a huge problem for archiving and sharing files if everyone else is using InDesign. Every designer that I’ve worked with that designed in illustrator is no longer working as designer because you can't sustain a career only knowing one app, in particular one that isn’t used for either print or digital design. (Hopefully you can find a way to soften this 🫣)
This was fantastic. I learn four or five small things in each of your videos. Thank you for doing these!
Thanks Tim! Trying to get the content going again.
Always informative and bringing my attention to some minute details which are essential for a beautiful graphic layout. Thank you
Great to hear. All the details make a huge different. Thanks for watching 🙏
bro this video teach me more than 2 years at community college
I don't know why this made be laugh, but I'm happy you found value. I really try to cut out the fluff and provide the information I think designers need to know.
These layouts are incredibly beautiful! I really love watching these videos (especially when typography is a subject), it's very inspiring to watch a master work!
Thanks so much David! Type is the key to success in this industry.
Hands down, the best RUclips video on preparing for print. Thank you for sharing your expertise!
Your Videos really gave me alot of confidence on Using Grid for my Designs... 🎉
Awesome!!! Keep it going with the grids. I really need to finish this series 🥺
Should you make the background white like add a white block or just leave it blank and it will be the page behind? Question 2: Why PDF/x-1a2001? I hear High Quality Print a lot or 2008?
Hi! The background can be blank. Printers don't have white ink, so it won't print anyway. The PDF/X-1a, has been the standard I've used for the past 15 years. Most offset printers require it because the settings keep the print production process consistent.
This is gold! I really appreciate how you talk through your design choices
I try to consciously do that so people can follow along. I do, however, not expect everyone to agree. I just want people to hear my reasoning and hopefully designers end up forming their own approach
Loved this video! So informative and organized. Thank you for sharing :)
Of course! Thank you for watching. Check out the full series!
You just boiled down and entire print production class to just 14 minutes. I love your use of the Link panel to double check color profile and PPI. THIS IS GOLD!!!
Omg, truly the class no one ever paid attention to (myself included). I hope I was able to simplify it? Thanks so much for watching 🙏
This is so interesting! Were you able to choose to work mainly at home, or is that sort of the norm?
This was during the pandemic, so I didn't have the option. I do find it more difficult to direct remotely than in person, but it's possible!
I fking love carole king
haha me too!
Tirso your design knowledge is so inspiring. Can you share some of your favorite resources for design information and inspiration?
Thank you! Yes, I should do a round up. 👀

Never give up!!!
Amazing... It was very inspirational.
That was the goal! I'm glad it worked
Thank you Tirso. I love your content!
