how is this holding up??
Hey man! Love the car! I’m looking at buying at 1984 380sl and what main components would you say I should look for before purchasing? I will be having a pre-purchase car inspection. Just want to be sure everything is in order before making my first classic car purchase.
@@iamgiob Hey man. Thanks for watching. Here is a link to my purchasing guide video. Good luck. Hope it goes well. ruclips.net/video/xsu3kxsBzzk/видео.htmlsi=Dz3w9dOA-udpmdGk
@ thank you!
hello, first thank you for all your very nice and details videos! I was wondering if you can please help me find the name or the part number of that metal bracket that holds the injector... when you pulled the first injector you can see it just below your hand.
@@yassinekhaled9880 Thanks for watching! I can’t find the part number but it’s the fuel injector retaining clip. You may want to call a dealer to see if they still have them. If not, try ebay or a junk yard.
I have watch both Part 1 & 2 (multiple times) and gleaned great information to help me with my '83 380sl. One question is how did you remove the mineral oil from the compressor and introduce the PAG oil? Keep up the great content on Sophia! I am trying to get my little "Sadie" blowing cold air in the summer. All your videos have been very helpful!! Thanks!
@@user-nf5xs6qw9x Thanks for watching. I’m glad you find them helpful! I wish Victor was here to help answer this question. I don’t recall this step. When he’s not traveling the world, he sometimes responds to questions on here.
@@user-nf5xs6qw9x I just went back and watched both videos. I don’t recall removing the mineral oil from the compressor. 2 years later, I still have cold air.
Howdy - did you find out what the "dying thing" is... i have an 82 380sl that does the same... I was hoping spark plug replacements would solve it, but looks like you had the same issue even after replacing all 8... any help would be much appreciated
Hey. Trying to remember my dying issue. Was it the video where it would have a hard time starting then shaking/whining for bit before going normal?
I have an 83' version and was wondering if you had any ideas how to get into the trunk if its locked/jammed. Im turning the key and pressing it but no luck. The battery is dead so i have to get in 😅

@@joewellborn802 Good luck!
Maybe you could’ve removed the bottom bolts off first to release the weight/pressure then remove the top bolts off next and not run into the issue you had. Or remove the top while the vehicle is still on the floor.
@@A1-AwesomeClips Yup. You have to remove the bottom before you lift the car.
@ the bottom or the top before you lift the car? I am saying you can lift the car then take wheels off. Remove bottom bolts then take the top bolts off. Would that work?
@@A1-AwesomeClips I think as long as you do either top or bottom before you lift the car, you should be okay. You want to relieve that tension. I’d do what I did with the driver’s side. Remove the top and bottom before lifting the car. That way, the strut is totally loose.
Doris needs to live on. I'm glad you didn't part her out but i hope she goes to a good home that will love her and put her back together again.
@@klwthe3rd I’m sure Doris is living a great life on a farm in Cambodia. I haven’t heard from the new owner. 😀
Does your clock work?
@@MattBourgeois Yup. It works.
The antenna switch is operating properly. The other donor antenna with fewer pins doesn’t have that height switch; it is either fully up or fully down.

Any links to the hoses that the mechanic recommended?
@@carol-joesfeir2746 sorry, no. The main hose off the strainer can be found at the dealer or multiple sites. The rest are normal fuel hoses without the outside mesh. That’s what I remember.
Why may I ask did you need to remove the headrest? I don't want to miss out on anything 😅

@sophiathe380sl then unplug the wire or, in your case, remove the bulb forever and 1 day. I did install a new catalytic converter when I installed the stainless exhaust... now, don't get too excited. They were both universal. I needed a new cat as the O2 sensor married the bung. No muffler or resonator needed. You are doing nice work on a beautiful classic.

It’s outrageous that a part like this would be so expensive and the fking mechanic who rips off a customer like this. This repair is a 30 minute job. However this is video will hopefully save other customers some big bucks by doing it yourself.
Unfortunately, can’t do much about it. They’ve been at this for years and are the experts with these cars. We only have so much knowledge and equipment to resolve these issues at home.
Good job. I did the same but leave the hard top suspended most of the time as I prefer to keep the soft top stretched.

What sort of wrench did you use to remove the single 17mm tensioner bolt? Mine appears to be 19mm and the pulley prevents the use of a socket. It is defying my best efforts to loosen it :-(

I actually like the greyish color on the bundts! I understand the level you were looking for in the finish. IF I end up keeping my TD I may just get them powder-coated. The brake dust is the worst offender.
Looks good! For now, I have to work with the stand and the fiberglass protection box.
I was just going to say, it is most likely a grounding issue. My 380SL had the same issue, and went all the way to 120. Fortunately, I was only about 2 miles from my shop so I took it in. When I got there the gauges were bouncing around like crazy. Two days later I got the car back and it was as they thought, the grounding. One of them was corroded so Luis fixed that one and added a 3rd, the way you did. They did not mention anything about sensor. I have not had any issues since. Oh, your Oxygen sensor light was on when you were driving near the end. Thanks for the video.
If you decide to change the front brake hoses on a 380SL, choose the Centric 150.35001. It has metric fittings and the overall length is 17.7 inches. Avoid parts houses that try to sell you hoses that are only 14.4 inches long.
I appreciate your videos. Can you recommend a book that I should buy for my 1976 450sl with same engine as Sophia... Thanks Again!

My 1985 380 SL is in Near Perfect Condition, but I will say underneath your car is far cleaner. This lets me know I have some cleaning to do.
@@lilibethdoherty295 maybe you should consider a dry ice treatment. I’m sure it’s super expensive
This is really helpflu because it's the only video i found which goes into detail. i'm planning to do this on my W126 420SE which is the later version of the M116 engine. I hope it is the same.
Good afternoon. I am going to take a look at mine this week. Yesterday, I looked under and they are attached exactly the way yours are attached. Hoping that the fender area underneath is as pristine as yours are.
Good luck! Report back. I love the new look.
@@sophiathe380sl Hey, how are you today? Well I took a look. I have four small brass screws instead of rivets on the underside. I had a good Phillips head screwdriver and I am unable to budge the screws, on any of them. Maybe I need a smaller head on the screwdriver? I need to be careful it doesn't slip and gouge the body. This weekend I will try using something called Godzilla lube...a green alternative lubricant. It worked on an antique desk lock and one of the door locks on the house. It is supposed to dissolve the rust and make removing the screw easier. I think the screws just need loosening at the contact point. I will let you know. My body shop guy says he can remove them, but I will save some coins by removing them myself IF I can do it safely. A new MB tech I connected with in my area may be able to do it as well. I am also deciding if I want to keep the chrome wheels or not. I have the next generation (the flat wheels). I also listened to the Pierre Hedary and Kent from Mercedes Source talking about the dangers of aftermarket wheels and suspension stress. The original wheels are 6.5", some of the aftermarkets are 6" I will keep you posted. Thanks
@@sophiathe380sl Hello, how are you and Sophia today? Well, all of my efforts have failed. As mentioned I don't have rivets, but just the brass screws. I have tried 5 screwdrivers, spaying a little lubricant on them, and this morning I tried a Phillips head bit attached to one of the power screwdrivers. Ughhh, so I guess I will have to make an appointment at the body shop. Surely they will have electric power to unscrew them. I so hope the fender lip is pristine underneath.
@@ronalddean3630 I wonder if you need to use a Dremel to strip the heads off. Cheaper to invest in a Dremel vs going to a body shop. Look it up
@@sophiathe380sl Hey, hope this finds you and Sophia well. Success. I took my SL to the Bodyshop guy I know. His partner came out and took them off in about 10 min; no charge. The secret? A SOLID screwdriver LOL. So, it isn't as pristine underneath as your fenders were underneath, but I think it is just dirt. I did see tiny areas of rust, near the front bumper and forward of the rocker panel, which is why these are so dangerous. It is rainy this week, but on the weekend I plan to do a good cleaning, but the car already looks better without them. There was a huge amount of crud under them. My brand says "Signature Line Fender Trim" Original Fendertrim, whatever that means. Mine don't say where they were made. This is not OEM for Mercedes but I know that the old 600's had it. They cleaned up nicely. The black shields are in perfect condition. I am not sure how to load images, I guess if I go to my channel, there is a place to load them. I will work on that. Other than that, scheduling some services and learning how to use the soft top. TTYL
What size was the caliper bolts if you remember?
I'm not sure. This was a while ago. I think I just reused the old ones.

i also have an 84 380sl. Every oil change and my Mercedes has 325,000 miles on it, I put a quart of naptha in the gas tank. Naptha is a mild cleaner which dries without any residue being left. I buy it by the gallon at Ace hardware and get 4 oil changes out of it. I think that is what keeps my fuel system constantly clean. Also even with these high miles, it still starts on the first click, summer and winter.
did you make a video of shaking upon start? thanks
@@frederickready3436 yes. It was starving for fuel. The mechanic had to change something behind the fuel distributer. I made a video on it: Hard warm start fixed
Excellent video. That measuring tool is awesome! Vic knows his stuff! I may now decide to look at my 300TD system at some point. I has never worked.
Wonderful! Love the black W108 sedan.
Nice!
i did this for a trans am i was restoring years ago, i got the same paint as you (same color even) but i found out that spraying it on turns out much MUCH nicer. i used the preval spray kit first and that didnt do that great of a job. so i took it it to wesco (automotive paint shop) and had them put it in a can but with leather/vinyl safe solvent. i used SEM vinyl prep, which not only cleans the surface of the vinyl but it also makes it tacky so the pain sticks to it and remains flexible, no cracking, no peeling all these years later. good luck.
