Harvest and Cook with Me | City Garden to Tiny Kitchen | Slow Living Vlog
Join me in my garden and in my tiny city kitchen as I prepare a plant based (vegan) evening meal with what my vegetable garden gives me. It's a slow and peaceful video with subtitles [CC] and I hope you find it relaxing.
If you're new to my channel, hi! My name is Stéphanie and I live in a big city in England. Here on Eighteen and Cloudy I share simple, seasonal, 'slow living' vlogs about gardening, cooking, sustainability and heritage crafts.
My husband and I rent a plot of land from the local government on which we grow food and flowers. In the UK we have a long tradition of allotment gardening as city houses and apartments often have small or non-existent gardens. We live in an apartment...

    I also love plant and seed gifts, it really makes you think of the person then. I got cucumber seeds from a letter friend 10 years ago and since I am cultivating those cucumbers every year. Same with bitter melon seeds that I got from a letter friend from Japan. It is so nice when after some time you hardly have to buy any seeds anymore, a perfect closed circle. I can't wait for my first dahlia bloom to open, and it also happens soon! <3 Nothing better than freshly harvested oven potatoes! Have a nice evening!

      Oh I love that you've kept those seeds going for all those years and can trace them back in time! That's really special! Yes I am trying to close the loop too, by saving seed when I can. Last year I only did a little bit of seed saving but I hope to do more this autumn by letting things go to seed. It's hot and sunny here today and tomorrow, I hope my flowers are enjoying the sun's rare appearance from behind this summer's perpetual rain clouds. Thank you! That's amazing, a samovar takes tea ceremony to the next level! I love the mystery behind it too, that you're not sure how your grandmother came to own it in the first place. I sometimes think I could do with a samovar on my desk with the number of times I'm up and down to boil the kettle. My usual workaround is my favourite Polish mug that holds half a litre at a time! If it was a tiny bit bigger I'd go sit in there on rainy days... Perhaps I could still squeeze a little chair in the centre without squishing my plants! Yesterday I made also a little sewing project, I made a little cloud pillow with terry cloth which is also a fabric that I love! Sunny also cuddled up on my clothes <3 Your compost looks good! After my little summer vacation I want to get a compost sieve ( I don't know if it's called like that, but I think you know what I mean). I'm looking forward to that! Ha! :) Sending lots of love!

    • @EighteenandCloudy
      @EighteenandCloudy Месяц назад

      Oh terry cloth will make a lovely pillow, it's a great tactile fabric. I didn't realise the cold weather extended to mainland Europe too, it's been a year of extremes with the rain and wind and now the cold. This morning the wind is blowing from the south so it's warmer, but it's also raining very hard. That said I have a soft spot for the sound of rain on the road outside. It helps dull the sounds of the city. I think animals find comfort in scent, one of my cat's favourite places to hide is one of those blue storage boxes that contains Ed's out of season cycling and running clothes! It's sweet that Sunny was the same way. Yes, it is a sieve! Also sometimes called a 'riddle', we have a little circular one and although it's extra work, the finished compost is beautiful to spread and work with. I love that you're a compost nerd too! 🙂

      @@EighteenandCloudy Yes, I understand our pets, I also find comfort in scents. When I was a child and my mother was away, I was crawling in her bed to smell her. Last year animals dug up my tubers but left them, uneaten, on the soil surface. Once they had sprouted and were growing, the animals lost interest but slugs started to feast on the fresh shoots and leaves. Sigh. It's just the way it is, as you say, fingers crossed the coffee / net / maybe less rain / better soil can help food and flowers grow faster than animals and insects can eat them!

    I really loved watching this video. I have done some needle felting but am looking forward to trying wet felting. Do you always use Rovings/tops to wet felt. I have a lot of carded wool. I was wondering if I could use that for wet felting. Otherwise I will look for some Merino rovings. I live in Queensland. Thankyou for sharing your knowledge.

    • @EighteenandCloudy
      @EighteenandCloudy 2 месяца назад

      I have just checked on a few felting blogs before replying as I only have experience with rovings / tops (that's just what I could find when I was planning this project, it's a common form of wool sold in the UK) but from what I've read, carded wool works very well too. Perhaps give wet felting a try with the carded fibres you already have to hand before embarking on a bigger project like the slippers, just to make sure that you like how carded wool handles and wet felts, but I think it should be fine. It's interesting to see who is finding my video at different times of year, I had lots of crafters from the US and Canada between November and March and now people are tuning in from Australia and New Zealand! Thank you for visiting, taking the time to comment, and good luck with learning to wet felt! I'm sure you'll pick it up quickly with a background in needle felting.

    Hello Stephanie 😊 your videos are lovely. ... I do have a question about the rose petals on the soap, how do they do after wetting the soap for the first time? ... I have made soap before but I have never added anything on top 🙂

    • @EighteenandCloudy
      @EighteenandCloudy 3 месяца назад

      Hello Maria, thank you! This is the first time I've put rose petals on top of soap, but I made a batch with calendula last summer, with petals blended into the batter but also as a decoration on top. The petals on top of the calendula soap gradually washed away as we used the soap, but they held up well in storage and didn't discolour with age. I anticipate it'll be similar with the rose petals. I used commercially dried rose petals for this soap (rather than from fresh roses) as I use them for baking and tea and had some in a jar. Each batch I make is a little experiment, it's so fun trying new things.

      It really is, isn't it? Growing seedlings for outdoors, as well as my houseplants, really helps me feel optimistic in early spring when it still feels quite wintery outside! Small space living is definitely a challenge at times. I'm grateful to have the balcony space, it really wouldn't be possible to grow as much as this from seed at home without it. I'd rely more on the greenhouse at the allotment, but there everything needs to be raised off the ground to keep our little mollusc friends away from tasty little leaves!

      @@EighteenandCloudy Yes, it's a really good feeling when a new garden year starts! Small spaces are definitely challenging, but also makes one really ingenious! @@wideeyedtree haha that's very true, it's amusing to think of the number of workarounds I've come up with over the years to do all the things I want to do without feeling cramped or cluttered. It's cold again here too, we had the mother of storms roll in on Sunday evening, the night after we finally put the panels in our greenhouse 😬 so I had to make an emergency visit on Monday after the worst of the wind had eased to check all was okay. Nothing broke, thankfully, but we're going to need to do some extra storm proofing work this weekend. Sigh. Still, I sowed my zinnias this week, so that's exciting!

      @@EighteenandCloudy I found the most difficult part with small spaces when it comes to sewing and having to lay out the fabric somewhere to cut it. Most things are happening on the floor for me as there was never a space for big tables or so. I just heated the stove again! It is really typical April weather at the moment! The storms are really bad for greenhouses. We knew that we need the sturdiest greenhouse here, otherwise it would just burst with the first real storm. Our garden is pretty exposed, but since the hedge is so big, it got a lot better! Good luck with all your gardening adventures!

      Thank you! We'll grow some of the tomatoes outdoors, I'm conscious that the greenhouse is only a 6x6 and I've already mentally filled it several times over! As well as last year's varieties we're trying a few new to us heirlooms this year (indigo blue berries, indigo pear drops, purple cherokee) but also some F1s as a guarantee - our allotment secretary recommended Crimson Crush for instance as they do so well on our site and in a poor summer.
